Miss Ashley Watson – Montrose County Fair & Rodeo Queen Walt Disney once said, “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” I’m Ashley Watson and being the Montrose County Fair and Rodeo Queen is a dream that I have been working towards since I was nine years old. After earning this title, I’ve been given multiple opportunities to represent Montrose at many other fairs and rodeos, as well as at community events. This past year has definitely been a dream come true. I’ve also been given many chances to inspire young girls to do what I do, and that is being a spokesperson for the sport of rodeo and the western way of life. I’m the daughter of Brian and Amber Watson. I also have an older sister, Courtney Hilton, who was just recently married. My parents and sister are my number one fans, and my biggest supporters. I would like to thank them for all they have done. I am looking forward to becoming a junior in high school, and being very active in FFA. I was elected Parliamentarian of my FFA chapter, I will be on the rodeo team, compete in public speaking contests, do Equestrian Working for my SAE, and compete on the Ag Sales team for my CDE all through FFA. I work very hard in school to stay active, and keep my grades up. Apart from the Royalty and school, I do many other things with my horses. I absolutely love to barrel race, it’s my passion. I barrel race my two five year old horses, Sugar and Rebel. Without them, it would be impossible for me to be a successful barrel racer. I also have a young colt that was just born in May, his name is Hotshot. I’m currently working with him and will train him myself to be my next barrel horse. In my free time, I show Western and English at local shows with my older show mare, Bailey. My horses are my life, and I can honestly say that I wouldn’t be the cowgirl I am today if it wasn’t for them.

Montrose County Fair & Rodeo Week 2013

Ranch Rodeo – Saturday, July 27th at 6:30pm. Admission $5.

The Ranch Rodeo is an annual event that serves as a living tribute to our western heritage. The Ranch Rodeo promotes our unique history and lifestyle by featuring competition between real cowboys from real working ranches.  The cowboys and their ranch horses compete in four events that showcase the necessary skills and know how ranch hands practice daily.  Spectators enjoy action, excitement, thrills, and laughs in a wholesome environment as they root for their favorite teams. Fans can actively participate in the fun by purchasing one of the teams in the event Calcutta.

Events Include Team Sorting: Cowboys sort numbered cattle from the herd and move them

across the finish line. Team Doctoring: Teams rope the head and heals of a designated animal and apply a mark to the animal simulating an injection. Team Branding: A team member on horseback ropes the calf, bringing it out of the herd. Two flankers remove the rope and pin the calf to the ground. A third team member “brands” the animal usually with paint that simulates the brand. Team Loading: Teams rope a steer, load the steer in the trailer along with their horses and get into the truck before the clock is stopped.
