he photographs in “Eyes on the Teche” show scenes in black-andwhite and brilliant color from the heart of our Teche Area. This is the final section of The Daily Iberian’s 2011 Community Profile that allows us to show off pictures submitted by our readers, our resident shutterbugs who participated in this year’s Eyes on the Teche contest. The quality and number of photos sent to us was impressive, a tribute to the creative eye and opportunities taken by the photorgraphers. At least one photo from each person who submitted snapshots is featured on these pages. We hope you enjoy how your neighbors see the place in which we love to live and work. Look in Sunday’s Daily Iberian for a feature story on the three top winners of this year’s contest.

On a universe

Early start

Concentrating on the follow-through during a tennis stroke comes natural to Danielle LeBlanc, who was playing recently on a local tennis court. She put some body English into the swing.

A bee gathers pollen from a cosmos, a flower with an orderly arrangement’ of cosmic proportions,’ which prompted Spanish priests to christen it ‘Cosmos,’ Greek for harmony, or ordered universe.

As Zach Lancon shows, you’re never too old, er, young, to start wearing the blackand-gold colors of the New Orleans Saints. He’s one of the team’s youngest fans.

THREE AUTHORS BOOK SIGNING & RECEPTION Saturday, February 26, 2011 11 am to 1 pm CARLA HOSTETTER writing as LYNN SHURR Joe Dean Billodeaux, womanizing star quarterback for the New Orleans Sinners, thinks maybe he should be looking for a more wholesome sort of woman than the ones who signed his list for sex after six seasons of celibacy ended. Nellwyn, a child psychologist who helps fulfill the dreams of critically ill children, comes to mind. His friends agree that Nell is exactly what Joe needs and do all they can to bring them together. But is Nell willing to take on Joe Dean with all his little problems and teach him that there is more to life than sex and football?

DIANE MARQUART MOORE In Chant of Death, the Seventh Deadly Sins, are fleshed out in a complex, narrative of suspicion, darkness, and deceit. Straight from the headlines–of monks becoming ‘rock stars,’ Chant of Death is set in a fictional Benedictine Abbey in southern Louisiana. When a murder breaks the ordered, prayerfulness of the monk’s days, Father Malachi finds his powers stretched to the limit in an effort to protect the innocent and identify the killer. Lives and philosophies conflict, setting off deadly sparks–where piety and ancient superstition often mingles; where Spanish moss veils the landscape, and a murderous soul finds a cloistered refuge.

When six-year-old Mary’s mother dies unexpectedly, she is “adopted” by her neighbors. She’s nearly seven feet tall, brilliant and beautiful, the result of her mother’s in vitro fertilization at a clinic in Vermilion, Louisiana. Were doctors experimenting on humans? Val, reluctant mother and professor of biology, becomes detective and protector. Her research on the genetics of plants with multiple chromosome sets gives her insights and sympathy for this outnumbered new race of humans, which the government and public want to eliminate. Murder, mystery, speculative science, and a mother’s love blend in a novel that asks us to consider what would happen if life were just a little bit different.

This nest was about 15 feet up in the tree. It was so sweet to watch these birds. It was like the bigger one was the ‘husband’ bird. He’d fly away and back to the nest many times over the course of the morning. Almost like he was going ‘hunting’ for food for his nesting spouse birdie, while she ‘stayed in the nest tending to their eggs.’
