AT A GLANCE

Iberia Parish, Louisiana

History In 1779, a group of about 500 Spanish settlers led by Francisco Bouligny moved from Spain to Louisiana and founded the city of New Iberia on the Banks of the Bayou Teche.

Iberia African American Historical Society Expulsion Marker One of two markers, the first one acknowledges Louisiana’s first black female physician, New Iberia native Dr. Emma Wakefield.

Named after their Iberian Peninsula, Nueva Iberia was then settled by Acadians who were exiled from Nova Scotia, Canada. The town officially became known as New Iberia in 1847, and the parish was created in 1868.

Location Iberia Parish is strategically located on Louisiana’s coast between New Orleans and Houston in the southwestern part of the state known as Acadiana. The parish is made up of 1,031 square miles, 575 of those land and 456 of them water.

The East Main Street Historic District of New Iberia contains 71 buildings, 57 of which are considered contributing properties of historic value. Shadows-on-the-Teche, a two-and-a-half-story, 16 room house, built in 1834, is one of these historic sites. With charming shops, beautiful atmosphere and southern charm, this location best shows off what New Iberia is and was. In 1868 on Avery Island, right on the outskirts of the city of New Iberia, the McIlhenny Tabasco Company was founded, creators of the world loved Tabasco brand of hot sauces. There is a self guided walking tour of this famous site. The Joseph Jefferson House, which sits on the acclaimed Rip Van Winkle Gardens, was built in 1870 and resides on the list of the National Register of Historical Places. The Gardens boasts 15 acres of semi-tropical gardens residing among 350-year-old oak trees and a picturesque lake, available for tours and events.

Tours are available at this historic site of American industry. In 1935, the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival and Fair started in Plaquemine, but was moved to New Iberia in 1937. This festival, which occurs near the end of September, celebrates the impact of the sugar industry on the state and Iberia Parish. Bouligny Plaza was the location of New Iberia’s first courthouse, which stood from 1884 to 1940, where it was moved to its current location on Iberia Street. Now it is a charming park in the center of New Iberia, which hosts the World Championship Gumbo Cookoff every second weekend in October. Taste the best in one of the signature Cajun and Creole dishes. The New Iberia Rail Depot was built in 1900 by Texas and New Orleans Railroad, a predecessor to the Southern Pacific Railroad. The New Iberia train depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 2013 was reinvigorated by a $1,250 grant from the BNSF Railway Foundation to be more welcoming to its riders. This station was part of the original Louisiana to California line, allowing residents to explore the country during the times of the frontier.

Leadership Iberia

Exploring the landmarks of New Iberia’s rich history ounded in 1779 by a group of Spaniards from Malaga, “Nueva Iberia” would grow from an outpost of 500 people to a city of 30,000. Nueva Iberia’s first post office was established in 1814, with the town incorporating in 1839 as “Iberia.” It wasn’t until 1847 that New Iberia received its current name by the state legislature. With its 241 year history, New Iberia has grown and changed with the times, yet so many things have stayed the same.

Hollywood on the Bayou

Experience a Taste of our Culture!

Hollywood’s infatuation with Iberia Parish goes back all the way to 1923. “White Rose” was the first film to use south Louisiana as its backdrop for filming. The movie, which was a silent film, features the gorgeous Shadowson-the-Teche with additional scenes filmed along the Bayou itself, St. Martinville and Franklin as well. Other classics, like “The Buccaneer” were also filmed in the famous Shadows, this time providing a lovely backdrop for the infamous pirate Jean Lafitte to charm his way across the state in his battles. Perhaps most famously the 2006 “All the Kings Men” was filmed at the Albania Plantation in Jeanerette. The movie features a figure similar to Huey P. Long, famous governor and political figure for Louisiana. Though the 1949 movie was a smashing success, the 2006 version was met with some critical reception. The movie starred Sean Penn, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Anthony Hopkins. The Iberia Film Festival is another great way to see what Hollywood has to offer right here on the bayou. Each year the best independent short films in the state compete for the title of Best Film. The weekend also features fun Q&As with the films’ creators where you can ask your favorite director all of your burning questions. If the fantastic 2019 titles are any indication, you will not want to miss 2020’s festival on July 30 - August 1. This year will also feature a new category, Best Horror Film, so make sure to be ready for those scares!

16 DISCOVER IBERIA

Recently Iberia Parish was the backdrop for “Christmas in Louisiana” a Lifetime movie about a lawyer who comes home to New Iberia for the Sugar Cane Festival. Looking to spend time with her mother and grandparents, Sarah Winter, a former “Miss Christmas” reunites with her former “Mister Christmas” for a little fun and romance. “Christmas in Louisiana” was the talk of the town this year with hosted viewing parties all over the parish. You can still view the movie on the Lifetime streaming app, or purchase it through Amazon, or other streaming services. If movies aren’t really your thing, check out the old episodes of “A Taste of Louisiana with Chef John Folse & Co.” several episodes were filmed throughout the parish, including one episode all about the Sugar Cane Festival and all the goodies each year brings. Though the show was filmed in the 1990s, Chef John Folse’s tidbits and treats never age. Checkout the Shadows-on-the-Teche episode as well. Another episode features New Iberia exclusively with a trip to the famous Rip Van Winkle Gardens and the Joseph Jefferson Mansion. There’s a little something for everyone filmed down in Iberia Parish, be sure to check them out!

he spring of 1944 was a tumultuous time in New Iberia. Black leaders, who had recently created a new branch of the NAACP, were beaten, threatened and expelled from the town they called home by members of law enforcement they were supposed to rely on. It wasn’t until the Civil Rights Movement that black leaders were able to return to the town that had wronged them. Black leaders of the community were beaten and dropped at the edge of town. Those men were Eddie L. Dorsey MD, Howard C. Scoggins MD, Luins Williams MD, Ima A. Pierson DDS as well as Herman Faulk, J. Leo Hardy, Octave Lilly, Jr., & Franzella Volter of the NAACP. The Iberia African American Historical Society, a nonprofit organization, whose goal is to “foster the appreciation, understanding, and teaching of the long, rich and unique history of African Americans in Iberia Parish,” hosted a community-wide symposium to recognize the 75th anniversary of theses events in November 2019. The IAAHS also hosts other events throughout the year with a goal of helping others to learn their history. Phebe Hayes, Ph.D and founder of the IAAHS, was a previous professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette before her retirement. Hayes, a descendant of fighters in the Corps d’Afrique now dedicates her time to researching African American history in Iberia Parish in the period from the pre-colonial era all the way up to the end of the Jim Crow era.

To make sure the 1944 event is not forgotten and to ensure that it is never repeated, an official Louisiana state historical marker has been placed outside the former home of Dr. Eddie L. Dorsey. You can see the marker at 500 French St. in New Iberia. Citizens also gathered to hear the truth of the event as it happened told by Dr. Adam Fairclough and Prof. Margaret Burnham. A painting by local artist Paul Schexnayder was also unveiled, showing a depiction of the event. Louisiana’s Poet Laureate (2019-2021), John Warner Smith was also on hand to read an original poem he created on the tragedy while surrounded by descendants of the victims of the 1944 violence. The second day of the event also saw a presentation by Southern University Law Center marking the “1619 Project”, this project marks the anniversary of 400 years since the beginning of slavery within the United States. The presentation helped to educate the public on how slavery and its connection to the Jim Crow era helped to create tensionous tragedies like what happened in New Iberia all those years ago. To get a personal look at the 1944 violent explosion you can listen to podcaster Stinson Liles’s dramatization of the 1944 event in his podcast Southern Hollows available at https://t.e2ma.net.

All About Shrimp

If there’s one seafood Iberia Parish is known for...it’s shrimp!

The Shrimp Festival in Delcambre was born in 1950 as a way to raise funds for the Delcambre Fire Department. Back then, the festival was known as the Iberia Parish Shrimp Festival and Agricultural Fair, the name “Delcambre Shrimp Festival” wouldn’t appear until the 1970s.

T

oday, the Shrimp Festival has a prestigious spot as one of the top ten festivals in the state. The Delcambre Canal provides ample opportunities for fantastic shrimping possibilities throughout the season, though in federal waters outside of Louisiana’s borders, shrimping all year round.

This year the festival will turn 70 years old and bring along with it fun, food and most of all shrimp of all sizes. But where do these shrimp come from? And what’s happening with today’s leaders in the Delcambre shrimping industry.

The website is seamless with lists of fisherman, like Ted Melancon or Monty and Melanie Morgan, so you know your seafood is locally sourced. Once your product is chosen, it will be shipped to your door, cutting out a few middleman steps between your seafood and you. Delcambre Direct Seafood also takes part in Delcambre’s Seafood

28 DISCOVER IBERIA

So far the open air, open market way of shopping has been quite the hit with the locals and travellers alike. December 2019’s market also saw Chef John Reason cook up a Sheephead Couvillion for the crowd gathered. Local Guide Lea Loftin commented on the Delcambre Seafood and Farmers Market saying, “Love the Farmers Market the first weekend of each month. Also love buying fresh seafood directly off of the boats. Doesn’t get much better than that! You should go to the market. Not overwhelming, just local folks making a buck or two off of hobbies, crafts and food.” The shrimp industry itself accounts for 15,000 jobs across the state and has an annual impact around $1.3 billion dollars. Louisiana’s seafood industry has thrived for some 400 years now. Look for the 70th Delcambre Shrimp Festival from August 19 - 23. For more information visit www.shrimpfestival.net.

Cane River Pecan Company A family-owned nut extravaganza About Cane River Pecan

The Team

Nationally known, Cane River Pecan Company is a nutty affair. Jady Regard’s family has been in the pecan business for decades, starting in 1969. Years later, the Regard family began serving the greater Iberia Parish with their goods each fall weekend. Jady Regard has been back in the pecan business since 2002 bringing the Regard family pecans back to New Iberia yet again with their new location on Main Street New Iberia.

Cane River Pecan Company has a team like no other. With employees that Regard calls, “the hardest working, most loyal colleagues I have worked alongside.” Pride is what drives the team of Cane River. Regard says. Their employees are the backbone of Cane River and the company would not be there without them.

What You Might Not Expect

Though Cane River is located on Main Street, they service large companies from around the nation. With expert strategies for corporate gifting, Cane River has made a name for itself in the corporate relationship business as well. Helping companies not only build but maintain invaluable customer and vendor relationships using attentive gifting services.

Cane River Pecan Company sits on a delicious secret - Boudin Pie! Their first attempt at a pie with their famous pecans, the successful end result is a sweet and savory treat. This nine-inch, deep-dish pie, the locally sourced masterpiece is made with over a pound and a half of un-cased traditional pork boudin and is laced with a lovely layer of sweet potato souffle. If that isn’t enough to water your mouth, a signature pecan praline glaze is layered on top!

Why Main Street? Cane River Pecan fits right in with the other familyowned, unique companies that lay along Main Street. With the newly created Historic District, Main Street has become even more attractive to locals looking to get a taste of the Shadows on the Teche, the Bayou Teche Museum and the future Rodrigue Park. Cane River Pecan Company hopes to be another great spot to pop into while touring the beautiful region.

What you can expect when you stop in their storefront Other than the lovely boudin pie, they have also brought out bourbon balls, which is a pecan topped delicately with bourbon-infused ganache dark chocolate candy. You can also get pecan cookies, pralines, pecan popcorns, pecan logs, pecan oil, natural pecans, pecan pieces and the ever-popular flavored pecans. Flavors come in milk, dark and white chocolate, praline, honey glazed and roasted pecans. There’s a little bit for every pecan lover in your life!

More than 100 companies currently call the Port of Iberia home with over 5,000 employees. Large sites of land are available and lease rates for Port publicly owned property are well below market value. As the future of oil and gas exploration in the U.S. shifts to the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the Port of Iberia and its vast skilled labor workforce is poised to expand its role as a national leader in top-side fabrication.

The Iberia Economic Development Authority (IEDA) serves to focus on moving Iberia Parish forward with realistic, actionable ideas and projects. IEDA is aggressively working on plans that have been developed with various governmental and private entitles within the community to make Iberia Parish a better place to live, work and do business.

CULTURE

Experience Culture Change With...

An honor en Francais Tim Rosamund isn’t your average elementary school principal. He’s a principal with an Academic Palms. The North Lewis Street Elementary professor received this honor for his excellent work in realizing the full potential of French Immersion programs like the one at his school. Rosamund and North Lewis Street have also been recognized as a World Language Immersion Site by the Louisiana Department of Education and has been given a Label FrancEducation. The accolade inducted Rosamund into the L’Ordre des Palmes Academiques, which translates to Knight in the French Order of Academic Palms. The honor was created by Napoleon I in 1808, and honors only the best in French academia. The Academic Palms has a long history attached to it, making it the oldest nonmilitary decoration in French History. The honor is especially significant to the Acadiana area, as many here have a French history. Only nine schools have received this honor of being labeled an outstanding French program in the United States and 158 throughout the entire world. Rosamund received this honor from Vincent Sciama, Consul General of France in Louisiana. Although Rosamund said he wasn’t a French speaker himself, he considered it an honor to help future generations learn the language and help to keep it alive. French Immersion elementary schools seek to start teaching students the French language at a very young age. Studies have shown that when the mind is young, it’s more susceptible to retaining language information. Schools like North Lewis Street Elementary integrate the language into every part of their day learning everything from math and science all in French. Though previously in the early 20th century speaking French was banned in schools, leading to the possibility of generations of non-French speakers in South Louisiana. Thanks to schools like North Lewis Street Elementary

36 DISCOVER IBERIA

Acadiana can not only prevent that from happening, but also give students all the benefits that come with being bilingual. This year the first North Lewis Street French Immersion students will finish college, Rosamund feels excited to see where they land and what successes they will see as well in their careers as they move forward in their lives. “This is near and dear not just to my heart, but to everybody; everybody here in Louisiana,” Rosamund said. “We know our heritage we know who we are. Having just a small part in keeping that culture and language alive means a lot, not just to me but to everybody here at North Lewis.”

Iberia Parish School Board As time changes, so does education at the Iberia Parish School Board. Students come and go with the passage of time, but one thing remains constant for the IPSB - improvement for both the 13,000 students served and the 2,000 employees that serve it. Fourteen schools saw improvement to their scores from 2018 to 2019 with three of those schools, Delcambre Elementary, Delcambre High and Loreauville High, scoring an A for the education they provide their areas. All other schools in Iberia Parish scored either an A, B or C. No schools within the parish were labeled unsatisfactory. The year also saw other achievements for the IPSB including a designation of “Top Ten” for growth in three student subgroups from the Louisiana Department of Education. They also received an “Equality Honoree” badge for Delcambre High and Delcambre Elementary. Local teacher Tasha Jolivette-Jones was named the 2019 Elementary School Teacher of the Year and awarded the Louisiana Public Interest Fellowship for the 2019-2020 for her work at Coteau Elementary. The award comes with a $50,000 stipend for Jolivette-Jones to use in order to study how to best better early learning through play. The biggest vote of the year came in the form of switching high school classes from the adopted block scheduling back to the traditional seven-class-aday form. Block scheduling, which has been popular in South Louisiana calls for longer class periods, but students only attend four classes. The four block schedule classes were previously popular with both students and teachers alike as the smaller amount of classes made for less homework and a more compact schedule throughout the day. Still, Superintendent Carey Laviolette said this switch to the seven class day will help test scores, among other things.

38 DISCOVER IBERIA

“Students outperform students on a four by four block when they are on a seven-period day, so we know that’s better for students,” Laviolette said of the schedule switch. Though the switch was made with resistance from both teachers and parents, Iberia Parish schools will start their transition soon with the full schedule switch happening for the 2020-2021 school year. Meaning students currently enrolled for the 2019-2020 school year will finish out the year in their current four class block schedule. The year has seen excitement in the realm of sports as well for Iberia Parish schools. Kayshon Boutte, wide receiver and number 1 pick from Westgate High School, chose Louisiana State University as his school of choice over Alabama. Ryan Antoine, coach for Westgate said Boutte could stand as the best football player to ever come from New Iberia, a feat indeed. Fellow Iberia Parish sports star Trey Amos of Catholic-New Iberia also signed on with a Louisiana school, UL Lafayette. Westgate saw two more players sign on with Louisiana schools, Keydrain Calligan to UL Monroe and Blayne Delayhoussaye to Southeastern Louisiana. Focused on the future for the Iberia Parish schools 2020 looks to be just as exciting as 2019 was. For more information check out the IPSB website at www.iberia.k12.la.us.

TRAILS AND TOURS

t i s i V e Com

Us

Lifetime Movie Trail Relive the magic of “Christmas in Louisiana” with the Lifetime Movie Trail! With so many places to see in Iberia Parish, knowing where to tour can be overwhelming. Thankfully we’ve got the scoop on just where to go in order to get the full cinematic experience.

Evangeline Theatre/Sliman Center For The Performing Arts

Bayou Teche Trading Company

Belanger House

301 W. St. Peter St.

815 E. Main St.

129 E. Main St.

Another well loved location from the movie, the Bayou Teche Trading Company. The event venue has played host to countless weddings and other special occasions throughout the years. Though the inside may be reserved, the outside is absolutely stunning with a certain Southern appeal.

Built in 1907 this historic home was the city’s first Postmaster’s home. In the movie, the home serves as the family home. Though intensive renovations were done to the home after the Belanger’s purchased the house in 1987. Located at the front of the Historic District, this home makes a great first stop on your list of places to see.

This lovely theater is where the two main characters, Sarah Winter and Luke meet for the first time in the movie. It serves as the main location for the “Sugarcane Christmas Festival.” Though the building is not normally decorated so festively during the rest of the year, it’s still striking on it’s own. The structure was originally a grocery store built in the late 19th century.

Shadows-on-the-Teche 317 E. Main St. The famous “Shadows” serves as the backdrop for the movie’s holiday market, but New Iberians know the home for much more than that. The home was originally built by the Weeks family some 125 years ago. Take a tour for yourself and see the preserved history inside with its original furniture, gardens and some 17,000 documents.

New Iberia City Hall 457 E. Main St. Also used as scenery for the lovely holiday market. This building is the heart of New Iberia, where the Mayor and others come to make sure the town gets what it needs. With a beautiful exterior the New Iberia City Hall is definitely worth a picture.

Bayou Teche Museum 131 E. Main St. One of the crown jewels of New Iberia, the Bayou Teche Museum served as a private retreat for the stars during their time filming. A place where they could rest, read their scripts and rehearse. Inside the museum the items on display tell a tale of New Iberia. Take a peek not only into the setting for “Christmas in Louisiana”, but the hometown of James Lee Burke’s Dave Robicheaux as well.

Gouguenheim 101 W. Main St. Home to both scenes and stars, the Gougenheim is a gorgeous building with loads of balcony area, four suites with private entrances and much more. See the filming location for the Christmas Dance scene up close and personal. Staying here also grants you complimentary breakfast next door at Victor’s Cafeteria!

Steinberg Building 232 W. Main St. A truly historic building, the bottom floor once served as a printing shop for the Weekly Iberian in 1984. With lovely circular windows and a unique structure, it’s easy to see why parts of the movie used this building as a filming location. Bonus: When telephones were introduced to the area the second floor served as a telephone exchange!

Tensas Tower On the Teche 111 N. Weeks St. A modern wonder, this unique house served as a home away from home for the cast and crew during their filming here. Though of course, the house was not large enough for the whole production to stay, the stars did. Ask for their rooms by name if you’d like to really experience what their time was like here in New Iberia.

Chevron (Gulf) Service Station 200 W. Main St. This historic lot was not originally the service station you see today. Originally the lot served as home to a house built by a son of one of the original Spanish colonists. Later, the home was bought and turned into a bakery before eventually in 1927 the structure was torn down and rebuilt as the structure you see today.

Pelicans on the Bayou

Main Street New Iberia

5 Jefferson St.

We’ve saved the best for last. Named as one of the most beautiful streets in the South. Whether you want to experience “Christmas in Louisiana” or experience the past, Main Street New Iberia will keep you coming back for more. Sit a spell on the banks of the Bayou Teche and take in all of the luscious history around you. Be sure to bring your walking shoes! You’re going to need them.

Home to the boat parade scenes, this restaurant is not to be missed. Favorite to locals and newcomers alike Pelicans on the Bayou serves some of the best poboys, fresh seafood and plate lunches you’ll ever eat, and with a view to absolutely die for. Check the local calendar for Pelican’s event schedule to sample a bit of local music as well.
