AT A GLANCE
Iberia Parish, Louisiana
History In 1779, a group of about 500 Spanish settlers led by Francisco Bouligny moved from Spain to Louisiana and founded the city of New Iberia on the Banks of the Bayou Teche. Named after their Iberian Peninsula, Nueva Iberia was then settled by Acadians who were exiled from Nova Scotia, Canada. The town officially became known as New Iberia in 1847, and the parish was created in 1868.
Location Iberia Parish is strategically located on Louisiana’s coast between New Orleans and Houston in the southwestern part of the state known as Acadiana. The parish is made up of 1,031 square miles, 575 of those land and 456 of them water.

CULTURE
Exploring the landmarks of New Iberia’s rich history
F
ounded in 1779 by a group of Spaniards from Malaga, “Nueva Iberia” would grow from an outpost of 500 people to a city of 30,000. Nueva Iberia’s first post office was established in 1814, with the town incorporating in 1839 as “Iberia.” It wasn’t until 1847 that New Iberia received its current name by the state legislature. With its 241 year history, New Iberia has grown and changed with the times, yet so many things have stayed the same. The East Main Street Historic District of New Iberia contains 71 buildings, 57 of which are considered contributing properties of historic value. Shadows-on-the-Teche, a two-and-a-half-story, 16 room house, built in 1834, is one of these historic sites. With charming shops, beautiful atmosphere and southern charm, this location best shows off what New Iberia is and was. In 1868 on Avery Island, right on the outskirts of the city of New Iberia, the McIlhenny Tabasco Company was founded, creators of the world loved Tabasco brand of hot sauces. There is a self guided walking tour of this famous site. The Joseph Jefferson House, which sits on the acclaimed Rip Van Winkle Gardens, was built in 1870 and resides on the list of the National Register of Historical Places. The Gardens boasts 15 acres of semi-tropical gardens residing among 350-year-old oak trees and a picturesque lake, available for tours and events.

Bouligny Plaza was the location of New Iberia’s first courthouse, which stood from 1884 to 1940, where it was moved to its current location on Iberia Street. Now it is a charming park in the center of New Iberia, which hosts the World Championship Gumbo Cookoff every second weekend in October. Taste the best in one of the signature Cajun and Creole dishes. The New Iberia Rail Depot was built in 1900 by Texas and New Orleans Railroad, a predecessor to the Southern Pacific Railroad. The New Iberia train depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 2013 was reinvigorated by a $1,250 grant from the BNSF Railway Foundation to be more welcoming to its riders. This station was part of the original Louisiana to California line, allowing residents to explore the country during the times of the frontier. The Conrad Rice Mill, located at 307 Ann Street, was built in 1912 and is the oldest independently running rice mill in the United States. Tours are available at this historic site of American industry. In 1935, the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival and Fair started in Plaquemine, but was moved to New Iberia in 1937. This festival, which occurs near the end of September, celebrates the impact of the sugar industry on the state and Iberia Parish. If you can make it, watch the crowning of Queen Sugar, chosen from contestants from each of Louisiana’s sugar producing parishes and King Sucrose, chosen from members of Louisiana’s sugar industry. New Iberia has many more pieces of history waiting to be discovered for the intrepid explorer and tourist, jump in.

Bayou Teche Museum Celebrates a Decade and George Rodrigue Gets a Park For a decade, the Bayou Teche Museum has displayed its collection of artifacts and memorabilia that tell the historic story of the Queen City and how it has evolved through culture, economy and its people. This past year the museum celebrated turning double-digits with expansion and a newly renovated Donald “Doc” Voorhies wing. With the generous donation made by Doc and other benefactors, the museum was able to purchase the building adjacent to the museum, which will allow for more classrooms, galleries and exhibits. The renovation of the museum will happen in phases with Phase 1 being complete, and Phase 2 to start in March 2021. Phase 3 will follow once funding and plans are approved. Phase 2 will include a stairway to the second floor and an opening between the existing museum and the newly acquired building, adding 10,000 square feet to the whole museum. The first floor, to be called “Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco Exhibit Hall,” will function as an open space that will host events such as lectures,

student activities, art and other rotating exhibits. The hall will offer history kiosks where visitors can listen to stories from Iberia Parish residents. Native New Iberian and former Governor of Louisiana, Blanco will be honored with a permanent exhibit displaying her desk and chair she used while in office. The second floor will also be used as a gathering space and will include a balcony, research library and archives. This will also be the new home of the expanded George Rodrigue Studio exhibit that houses the internationally acclaimed Blue Dog artist and native New Iberian’s unfinished painting he was working on at the time of his death in 2013. Also part of the museum expansion and rehab is the George Rodrigue Pocket Park ,which has begun construction. There is already a three-sided, three-colored, 8-foot statue of the Blue Dog purchased with donations from Iberia Parish residents and future plans consist of an arbor, trees, parking, landscape, a George Rodrigue biography wall and benches.

7 Murals Making New Iberia Beautiful
I
f you stroll through New Iberia, chances are you will spot an intricate piece of art painted on the side of an historic building or along a random wall. These murals not only add beauty to the city, but also represent the artistic culture prevalent in New Iberia and symbolize the unity of the residents. One such mural demonstrates how the people of New Iberia are all too eager to beautify the city and showcase their beloved home. The Super Shell Spruce Up mural started with the desire of New Iberia residents to, well, spruce up the abandoned building that sits at the entrance of the city. The vacant building needed an embracing vibe, one that made the residents of New Iberia proud to welcome visitors to their city. So, residents Josh and Tiffani Pellerin along with local artist Paul Schexnayder took it upon themselves to ask the owners of the building if they could propose a way to improve the aesthetic of the vacant space. They suggested a mural that captured the essence of their little part of Acadiana. After a few discussions and design ideas, the final draft was agreed upon and the community came together to help. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, power washing, paint and even financial support were donated. Over weekends of rehabbing the old building, volunteers showed up to help, portraying the adoration and pride the community truly has for New Iberia. The result is an amazing piece of work that represents the community and the attributes that are unique to the area. Tabasco, sugar

cane, sugar mills and the gumbo cookoff beam through the vibrant paint colors. And the once overtrodden building that dared people to enter the Queen City, now invites them to relish in her splendor. Other cool murals to see around New Iberia that serve as a cultural backdrop as well as amazing photo ops: Seven Kings This mural created by Paul Schexnayder is located off St. Peter Street on a wall near First United Methodist Church. Each king is carrying a gift that represents the city of New Iberia. I Love New Iberia Another mural by Schexnayder is located off Banks Street that depicts New Iberia festivals and local events. Ms. Helen’s Biscuits Schexnayder completed this mural paying homage to Ms. Helen Johnson and her infamous biscuits that she used to serve up at Helen’s Cafeteria. Alligator Mural Mary Lacy may be from Vermont, but her depiction of the south can be seen on this Main Street building. The Mill of New Iberia The old smokestacks located at E. Main and N. Lewis Streets were a magnet for graffiti artists, so owner Jonathan Derise decided to allow these artists to finish their art. It is now a photographer’s dream backdrop. The House of Rudolph Created by local artist Jimmy Rink and his wife, the scene is located at St. Edwards School to pay tribute to its founder St. Katharine Drexel.

New Iberia’s Master Plan
A
s part of Mayor Freddie DeCourt’s beautification efforts outlined in his Master Plan, Li’l Brooklyn, formerly known as Freetown, is on the agenda for a rehab project. There is already a park in the works for the neighborhood, and improvements and expansion that consist of sidewalks, murals and crosswalks are next on the itinerary. The efforts started with a meeting of the residents and turned into painting a few houses and planting landscapes, all in the hopes to help clean up the city. It truly became a community affair as volunteers came out to lend a helping hand brushing paint upon the trims and doors of homes and planting azaleas along the yards. Donations from Bayou Paints were offered to complete the exterior renovations of many of the homes and funds secured by the city of New Iberia, Main Street Association, and even donations from generous community members have been received and greatly appreciated for this cleanup gesture.
24 DISCOVER IBERIA
Other agenda plans include: 1. Main neighborhood entry at Henry Street and Duperier Avenue. 2. Secondary neighborhood signage at boundary streets. 3. Banners on light poles on Henry Street. 4. Artistic crosswalks. 5. Encouraging murals and possible forming a partnership with building owners to create a neighborhood history mural. 6. Connecting sidewalks on Henry Street from Rosier Street to Allen Street. So next time you drive through Li’l Brooklyn and catch a glimpse of the fresh and vibrantly painted houses and immaculately trimmed gardens, remember that it took a village.

Let’s Kick the Tires and Light the Fires: Updates from Iberia Airport Authority How Acadiana Regional Airport is Preparing for Takeoff The Acadiana Regional Airport is a general aviation airport, located just north of U.S. Highway 90 (the future Interstate 49 corridor) and just south of Louisiana Highway 82. After two years without an Airport Director, Maurice “Moe” Songy, a native of Louisiana living and working in Chattanooga, Tenn., was hired for the role. He shared the potentially bright future for the Acadiana Airport and the multi-phase plan to update this “diamond in the rough.” Update 1 A taxiway rehab project is in the works which will open doors to the north area of the field. Currently the taxiway is damaged and funds from the FAA and State DOTD Aviation Department are being allocated in the amount of 1.6 million dollars to refurbish it. Update 2 A modern fire station is in the design process and when complete, funding will be the next discussion. The design proposes a three-bay fire station with dayroom, office, kitchen and storage rooms. Update 3 Upgraded lighting for Aviation Exteriors. LED lighting will be installed, which will be energy saving and provide quality control for the employees of AVEX who paint the aircraft. Update 4 A new access road that leads to the south of the airport will provide better and faster transportation for businesses entering the airport. The industrial improvements will provide roundabouts and accommodate semi traffic. This will allow larger access to the airport and entice cargo companies to come to the area. Update 5 The FAA is working on a noise waiver that will allow more international aircrafts to be able to do business with Acadiana Regional Airport. As of
28 DISCOVER IBERIA
now there is a law limiting the noise an aircraft can make in order to enter the U.S. This law does not exist outside of the U.S., so some international planes are too loud to enter U.S. airspace, prohibiting international cargo planes to enter the U.S. The proposal has been created and verbiage is now being worked on. Update 6 Presently there is a waitlist for hangar space, so the airport is always seeking more funding to create additional hangar space that will bring in more aircraft, which will lead to more revenue for these updates. The Acadiana Regional Airport has the ability to bring more business to Iberia Parish and create employment for its residents, thus the Iberia Airport Authority is continuously planning new ways to increase funding to maximize the potential of this local aviation airport.

Positively Iberia! The Silver Lining of Iberia Parish Positivity Hails in the Queen City Started in October 2019, Positively Iberia! was created by the Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce to promote the oftentimes overlooked positivity and good deeds that happen in our lovely community. The efforts of the Chamber to promote activities, businesses, upcoming events and positive community awareness became almost an overnight success as followers from the community as well as the surrounding Acadiana area tuned into the televised segments and listened intently to the roundtable discussions about the beloved Parish of Iberia.
Without skipping a beat, Positively Iberia! managed to gain more followers and support, some even globally. They promote major virtual events, like the World Championship of Gumbo Cookoff, and a virtual happy hour to get to know the stars, producer, director and cinematographer (all Louisiana natives) of the locally made film, “Lost Bayou: A Feature Film.” Every Thursday you can catch their morning show on KANE 107.5FM/AM1240, which highlights all the exciting happenings going on in Iberia Parish from updates on the Iberia Airport to new art murals you can find throughout the city.
The ongoing, multimedia campaign positively brought awareness to one day fundraisers, like “Hot Dogs for Seniors,” to the month-long feature of National Black Businesses. The program introduced new doctors and businesses and spoke to local artists, musicians and innovators. Positively Iberia! became a friendly reminder of the amazing things that Iberia has always had to offer.
Positively Iberia! is your source for all the good that Iberia Parish has to offer, the good that has always been here, but needs a little more positive promotion. Because Iberia is a wonderful place to live and visit…and it’s only getting better!

Even with the onset of the global pandemic, Positively Iberia! remained encouraging and upheld its optimistic mindset, pivoting to still bring positivity to the community they promised to lift up just months before. Roundtable discussions and television segments turned to live Zoom meetings posted on Facebook. While many of the upcoming events that Positively Iberia! was set to promote were cancelled, live radio shows still found a way to help promote the now virtual events and raise awareness of businesses that were open for patrons, new businesses that opened amid the pandemic, essential worker spotlights and hurricane relief efforts.
