The Susitna and Talkeetna Communities have requested the Matanuska-Susitna Borough (MSB) set aside sufficient borough-owned forest land in the vicinity of the Susitna Valley High School (SVHS) to establish a sustainable yield wood supply in support of a cord-wood fired supplemental heating system, as well as, to provide teachers and students with educational opportunities in forest silviculture and sustainable wood harvest.

The Department of Planning and Land Use will hold a public hearing on Thursday, November 8, 2012 beginning at 1:00 pm at the Animal Control Training Room located at 9470 E. Chanlyut Circle, (between the Central Landfill on 49th State Street and the Recycle Center) Palmer.

Disabled persons needing reasonable accommodation in order to participate at a Borough Board/ Commission meeting should contact the Borough ADA Coordinator at 746-7432 at least one week in advance of the meeting.

The purpose of this public hearing is to obtain public input on a new application for the FFY12 Community Development Block Grant program. Interested parties are invited to attend and nominate projects for this grant program.

The MSB proposes to reserve all the borough owned operable forest land (3,118 acres) located within the Parks Highway and Rabideux Creek Natural Resource Management Units which are located in the vicinity of the SVHS. The Butte Personal Use Firewood Harvest Area will open Friday, August 3, 2012. This area is designated as personal use only for harvest of dead-down and/or dead-standing spruce. A $25 permit is required and may be obtained from the Land & Resource Management Division between the hours of 8am-5pm, Mon-Fri. beginning Wednesday, August 1 at the Mat-Su Borough Administration Building, located at 350 E. Dahlia Avenue, Palmer. The permit must be in your possession during the removal of wood from the site. The cost for each cord of wood is $25 with a maximum of three cords per household per year from the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
