‘High-quality casual dining’ starts at salad bar at Ruby’s THE DAILY IBERIAN

F

resh red onions, crunchy croutons and an overall wide selection of salad bar items are the reasons why Kristi McCauley goes to Ruby Tuesday’s for her midday meal. “It is definitely one of the best salad bars around,” McCauley of New Iberia, said. Many Teche Area residents agreed with McCauley’s sentiments naming Ruby Tuesday’s the winner of this year’s Best of the Teche award for Best Salad Bar. Ruby Tuesday’s, located on Louisiana 14 near the on ramp to U.S. 90, was chosen by readers of The Daily Iberian as the best place for salad bar in the newspaper’s annual Best of the Teche voting, an unscientific survey in which readers cast their votes for their favorite people, places, businesses and things in the Teche Area. “We have been really focused her on high-quality casual dining,” operating manager Jeremy Myers said. “We make sure the customers are getting the highest quality products.” Myers, a 12-year veteran of Ruby Tuesday’s who also oversees branches in Alabama, Mississippi and across Louisiana, said that the produce comes from only the

The result has been a lunch and dinner locale that has people flocking to the restaurant, often filling the dining room and bar during peak hours. Don Birtell of Borger, Texas, said that he was just passing

Tuesday’s. “I really, really liked it today,” Birtell said. “They have a great variety, with tomatoes, carrots, spinach leaves, etc.” Along with the causal drop-in, the salad bar is what also keeps loyal returnees from finding another place to dine. “The food is wonderful and the service is really great,” Charles Ancona, of New Iberia said. “All the vegetables are crispy and fresh, with a great variety of little things to put on the salad.” Ancona said that he comes to Ruby Tuesday’s about three to four times a week with a small group of friends. He said that they will often change places across the city but keep coming back to Ruby Tuesday’s over and over. “It’s good because people try to eat healthy and they have little peanuts and such that are a great touch,” Ancona said.

Sink your teeth into the Best Hamburger at Duffy’s THE DAILY IBERIAN

There is nothing better to bite into than a big juicy hamburger — especially one from Duffy's Diner in New Iberia. That's what voters of The Daily Iberian's Best of the Teche survey have said many times in an unscientific survey in which readers cast their votes for their favorite people, places, businesses and things in the Teche Area. It comes to no surprise to Brent Migues who owns the diner along with Wendy Migues. This was the sixth time readers of The Daily Iberian voted Duffy's Diner as the best place to buy a hamburger in the Teche Area. The diner was also recognized by voters over the years for having the best prepared seafood, po-boys, gumbo, best waitress, and best dining atmosphere in the

cDonald’s restaurants have undergone a rejuvenation over the past four or five years, with efforts to make the menu more contemporary and to refurbish the restaurants in the area, and diners apparently have noticed. McDonald’s was chosen by readers of The Daily Iberian as the Best Place for Fast Food in the newspaper’s annual Best of the Teche voting, an unscientific survey in which readers cast their votes for their favorite people, places, businesses and things in the Teche Area. Larry Miller, whose family owns and operates the four McDonald’s franchises in New Iberia, said the brand has become more contemporary in recent years, helping it garner first place Best Place for Fast Food voting in 2009 and 2010. The Millers also own McDonald’s franchises in Abbeville, Franklin, Kaplan, St. Martinville and Broussard. “We’ve added wraps, tortillas, and we added real fruit smoothies this week,” said Miller. “We’ve gone into espresso. We’ve gone into iced coffees. We’ve gone into Angus (beef burgers). Across the menu we’ve evolved.” All the updates are part of a program started in 2003,

The fourth, located near the corner of Main and North Lewis streets, should undergo similar refurbishing in the next couple of years, said Miller. “Every one of them has a McCafe,” said Miller, referring to the area dedicated to the restaurant’s coffeehouse-style food and drinks. “We have state of the art computers.” Most of the restaurants even have robotic soft drink machines. “It’s an ongoing evolution,” said Miller. Corina Cahanin, shift manager at the McDonald’s located at the corner of Center Street and Admiral Doyle in New Iberia, said that service remains a big compo-

McDonald’s also was voted Best Place for Kids’ Food and received an honorable mention as the Best Place to Meet for Breakfast.

For the second year running, readers of The Daily Iberian selected Popeye’s as their favorite fried chicken for Best of the Teche — an unscientific poll of readers who cast votes for their favorite people, places, businesses and things in the Teche Area. Alton Hebert, a New Iberia native, said he loves Popeye’s fried chicken so much, he eats it multiple times a week. “It’s the best fried chicken,” Hebert said. “I come here too much.” The same goes for Alyssa Brown, another New Iberia native, who said she frequents Popeye’s at least once a week to get her fried chicken fix. Brandon Levine, who has worked at Popeye’s on West Main Street in New Iberia for two years, said the reason people “love that chicken” is because it’s pre-

now the owner. The business not only handles residential needs but also commercial and inland marine needs too. They have a sheet metal shop and handle flashing and duct work, as well. Delcambre said they can handle all services from start to finish, and many of his employees have been around for years. The business services, not only New Iberia, the Teche Area and into Youngsville and Broussard. “Because we have people that have been here a long time, our customers have grown accustomed to calling for certain service techs,” he said. “And if that one is not available, they request another of our techs they have dealt with. It all goes back to having trust in the person that comes to handle the problem.” The company has 16 trucks and around 30 employees available to handle all needs. “We’ve been here a long time and we’re not going anywhere,” Troy Delcambre said. “We look out for our employees and our customers. They are our greatest asset. “Knowing our customers appreciate us and continue to call on us is the greatest feeling and we’ll always be parked here on Jane Street.” Jo Delcambre said her husband would be honored and proud of the recognition. “If he’d be here today, he’d say ‘thank you New Iberia.’ ” she said.

Carmichael said. Carmichael, who retired as barge supervisor for Teledyne Movible in 1992, was pleased to hear about the Best of the Teche award for Dronet’s Auto Repair. Dronet’s service is a plus for people on the go and need reliable transportation, he said. “I’m a satisfied customer. He tells you he’ll have it ready in a few hours, it’ll be ready in a few hours. If he tells you it’ll be ready tomorrow, it’ll be ready tomorrow,” he said. “And if he finds something else wrong ... he’ll let you know.” What’s wrong with most vehicles Dronet sees is A/C. Coincidentally, air conditioning repair happens to be his favorite as an auto mechanic. The sizzling heat of summer is when a lot of the air conditioners break, he said. Compressors are at fault most of the time, followed by

Mechanic’s favorite repair — air conditioners — is customers’ most common need. O — in no particular order — faulty wiring, belts and leaks in hoses, he said. Brake jobs are the next pressing order of business for Dronet, who has four mechanics on duty — Beau Worley, who has been there five years; Phetsamone Khamphilavong, 15 years; Sil Khamphiavong, six months, and Bouakham Siripanyou, four years. There are challenges, the owner said. “A tuneup’s not fun no more. It’s not easy,” Dronet said.

“It used to be $50 and $75. Today, it’s usually around $350 to $400” because of the extensive computer work involved, he said. On newer models, he usually recommends putting the engine on a computer to troubleshoot the problem and see what might be wrong before diving into a complete tuneup, he said. DUFFY’S: Knew he wanted to open diner FROM PAGE 4

“I think we have always been known for having the best hamburgers in town since we first started operating in a small snowball stand some 26 years ago. When winter came and we could no longer serve snowballs, we switched to hamburgers and hotdogs,” said Migues. “I knew then that I wanted to one day open a diner, but I had no idea it would turn out to be a business of this size, I had only hoped at that point. Duffy's has been at its 1106 Center Street location since 1996. Migues said his business hasn't been affected much by the growth of the franchise restaurants surrounding the city. “I think people know we have a good hamburger here and it is something that cannot be found at a franchise restaurant,” he said. Migues takes the diner's '50s theme one step further by holding an antique car show the second Saturday of each month.

the family is no stranger to New Iberia restaurants, Laura LeBlanc said. The family has been in the restaurant business for more than 44 years, and were the owners of Happy Days restaurant in New Iberia. When it came to opening Seafood Connection and finding the perfect mix to draw in residents from all around Acadiana, Menson LeBlanc said “It was all about trial and error and looking for the best recipe.” “Mom and dad cooked all their lives,” he said. “They just had to apply it to seafood.” Seafood Connection has a history of taking first place for boiled seafood in the Best of the Teche, Menson LeBlanc said. The favorite boiled seafood item offered tends to be the crabs, Menson LeBlanc said, though the crawfish and shrimp also are continued hits on the menu. Seafood Connection offers its guests a casual and family-friendly atmosphere, Menson LeBlanc said, “a place with quality food, great flavor and a great price.” With the drastic rise in shrimp prices this season due to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Menson LeBlanc said the family has found other ways to make up for the rising costs without having to pass the cost on to Teche Area shrimp lovers. “We really try to keep customers satisfied,” he said. “Just providing good seafood keeps us first.”

Favored pharmacy not taking its nod for granted BEST PHARMACY O

BY HOLLY LELEUX-THUBRON THE DAILY IBERIAN

O 1ST: Delaune’s Pharmacy.

D

elaune’s Pharmacy in New Iberia is no stranger to topping the charts of The Daily Iberian’s annual Best of the Teche survey, having done so consecutively for the past nine years. But, Manager Sheila Derouen said she never takes the recognition for granted. “We never really know when the voting is going on, we’re so busy,” Derouen said. “We’ve heard of other places handing out copies of the newspaper to try and get votes, but people still keep voting that we’re the best and that feels good.” Delaune’s ranked first in the Best Pharmacy category for this year’s Best of the Teche, an unscientific survey in which readers cast their votes for their favorite people, places, businesses and things in the Teche Area. Derouen said she thinks the secret to the pharmacy’s stellar reputation in the community is because people know the

Delaune’s Pharmacy has won the Best of the Teche survey for nine consecutive years. staff cares. “We try and hire people that really care about the sick and the elderly,” she said. “We always go a little above and beyond for them.” Above and beyond including the rare service of home delivery, which Derouen said is a service the pharmacy’s customers appreciate. The pharmacy has five delivery trucks that run almost nonstop, she said. “We believe that our customers should get what they want when they want it,” said assistant manager Carol Melancon. Derouen said many people do not real-

ize just how much the pharmacy staff does because so much of it is done behind the scenes. It is also important the staff here knows most of the pharmacy’s customers by name, Derouen said. With a staff of 35, many who have been employees for more than 10 years, the institutional knowledge and personal care it can provide is hard to find. The pharmacy first opened at the turn of the 20th century, Derouen said, and merged with her father’s drug store, Family Drug Store, in the 1960s.

She said through the years the staff has always tried to do whatever it can to help people who walk through the pharmacy doors, as well as those confined to their homes. “In the day when greeting cards were the thing, we would pick out cards for our elderly patients who didn’t drive and send them five or six to chose from,” Derouen said. “How many places can say they do things like that for their customers.” And when the chain grocery stores began opening up just down the street from Delaune’s Lewis Street location, Derouen and her staff were not concerned it could impact their business. “They can’t give the one on one,” she said. “If it did anything, it beefed up and pushed us into a whole new spectrum of service.”

hen looking for comfortable, affordable furniture that is ready to walk out of the store the same day, look no further than Home Furniture on Jefferson Terrace, store manager Brian Richard said. “We carry lots of mid-level, affordable and promotional furniture,” Richard, who has been with the branch for the past six years, said. “It’s kind of like fast food — get it and ready to go.” Home Furniture was chosen by readers of The Daily Iberian as the Best Place to Find Furniture in voting for the Best of the Teche, an unscientific survey in which readers cast their votes for their favorite people, places, businesses and things.

Ronny Sonnier, Home Furniture employee, sits in the store’s showroom. From couches to sofas and loveseats, dining room tables to

bedroom sets, including Temperpedic products, all the

pieces in the store are priced with the customer in mind, Richard said. “We are extremely excited to be recognized,” he said. “To have won many years in a row is a great accolade.” The New Iberia store was founded in the early 1980s by Ged Fleming III, who had the original location on Main Street. The building was moved in 1990 to its present location on Jefferson Terrace after Fleming saw the economic potential of the corridor, Richard said. “Ged (Fleming) saw the natural progression of business in the area,” Richard said. Richard said the primary reason for his store’s success is the down-to-earth atmosphere that keeps customers coming back year after year. “I am truly blessed that we

Sabrina Sigure, who has been at the store for the past five years, said everybody really has a good time. “It is a family-like atmosphere, everyone gets along pretty well,” she said.

eche’s Donuts on St. Peter Street in New Iberia has been serving up warm, gooey goodness for 22 years and Teche Area residents consider its doughnuts the best around. The doughnut shop, owned by Debbie Smith, has topped the Best of the Teche Best Place for Doughnuts category each year votes have been cast by area residents. The Best of the Teche poll is an unscientific survey in which readers cast their votes for their favorite people, places, businesses and things in the Teche Area. The doughnuts here are so good, at least for the last two years it was the only doughnut shop suggested for the top honors by area residents casting votes. The best doughnut category is the only category this year where second, third or honorable mentions were not awarded because all votes cast point to Meche’s as the best. John Smith, the manager at Meche’s for seven years, said the winning recipe is simple. Everything is made from scratch and nothing ever changes. “It’s the family thing that brings people in,” Smith said. “And, we don’t change on people.” Smith, a former police officer and self-proclaimed expert

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

amilies all over the Teche Area have named their favorite place for a creamy, cool treat. Baskin-Robbins, on 1104 E. Main St., has a customer base that spans generations as it has been serving 31 flavors of its ice cream for 32 years in the New Iberia community. The ice cream shop was chosen by readers of The Daily Iberian as the Best Place for Ice Cream in voting for the Best of the Teche, an unscientific survey in which readers cast their votes for their favorite people, places, businesses and things. The company was created in Glendal, Calif., by Burt Baskin and Irvine Robbins in 1953 and now sells its products all over the world. The international company prides itself in offering customers 31 options of ice cream flavors. New Iberia locals Melvin and Ruth Judice and their daughter Angie Judice have owned the Main Street franchise for 23 years. This is the second year BaskinRobbins has won the best ice cream category, topping Dairy Queen last year. This year’s runner up was Sonic, known for its floats, sundaes and shakes. People always have fond memories of what they used get to as kids.”

She said her favorite ice cream flavor varies from time to time but she said she is faithful to pralines ’n’ cream, which according to employee Bree Hollier, is a favorite flavor among locals along with cookies ’n’ cream. Angie Judice said she plans to stay in the family business and anticipates the parlor to continue to be a local hang out for many more years to come.

The Best of the Teche supplement is an unscientific survey in which readers cast their votes for their favorite people,

He said he chooses to shop at Lowe’s because he knows the store will have exactly what he needs in stock. “The selections are great,” he said as he shopped for mortar to build brick trim around his flower beds. “I use them for a lot of incidental purposes.” He is building the house himself and said the store makes do-it-yourself projects affordable. The company began in 1921 as a small hardware retail store in North Carolina.

Lowe’s now owns 1,710 stores in all 50 states and serves approximately 14 million customers. Kylie Guidry, of New Iberia, has been working at home improvement store for two years. She said the staff ’s helpful atti-

Elizabeth Briney, community liaison, said what separates Garden View — a locally owned and operated retirement community — from other retirement homes is the care it offers retirees with memory impairment. “We offer a secured neighborhood for residents with Alzheimer’s or dementia,” Briney said. “We provide a higher level of care to these residents.” Resident Fred Comeaux, who is 82 years old, said living at Garden View makes him feel like a teenager. But that’s just part of it. “With a house you have to worry about upkeep and here it’s all done for you,” he said. “They do everything but chew your food for you ... and there’s someone on duty all night long, so you can go to bed at night and feel safe.” Along with group music sessions, where residents sing songs from the 1920s through the 1940s, Comeaux said residents can enjoy nonstop BINGO competitions and quiet lateafternoon strolls through Garden View’s lush gardens. With 55 total apartments, 10 dedicated to residents requiring special care, and 45 rooms for general assisted living, Briney said Garden View is about 90 percent occupied, but still has a few vacancies for potential residents.

But after leaving Catholic High School as head football coach to start an insurance agency from scratch with only his wife, Kathy, Scott enjoyed the thought of “helping people to make things right” enough to stick around. “A lot of people have a bad impression of the insurance industry, but we get to help,” Scott said. “They come to us when something’s wrong, and it’s our job to make it right.” Scott ranked first in the Best Insurance Agent category for

hirty-eight years and hundreds of motor vehicles later, Dronet’s Auto Repair shop has risen to the peak in popularity in New Iberia. Cliff Dronet, who was a veteran auto mechanic at a local automobile dealership when he went out on his own in 1972, has earned a reputation for telling it the way it is, he said, and then sending drivers home happy in their purring car, mini-van or pickup truck. “I tell the truth. I try to do the best I can,” Dronet said recently in an attempt to explain his career’s longevity and success. Also, he said, “We’ve got some good boys who work for me. eche Area retirees have spoken. Garden View Assisted Living was chosen through an unscientific poll by readers of The Daily Iberian as the Best of the Teche retirement community.

A fellow football coach from Berwick High School began explaining the insurance business to Scott, which then led to his and his wife’s venture into the industry. “We started with nothing,” he said. amilies all over the Teche Area have named their favorite place for a creamy, cool treat.

Big brother Aspyn, 8, said chocolate chip is his top ice cream choice. Angie Judice said she plans to stay in the family business and anticipates the parlor to continue to be a local hang out for many more years to come.

election and service is this home improvement store’s formula to attract local customers to its New Iberia location — customers who return time and time again. Lowe’s, at 2816 Louisiana 14, was chosen by readers of The Daily Iberian as the best place to buy lawn and garden equipment and best place to buy outdoor plants. The Best of the Teche supplement is an unscientific survey in which readers cast their votes for their favorite people,

places, businesses and things. Loreauville resident Mike Landry spends his breaks from being offshore in the oil business working on building his new home.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

the family is no stranger to New Iberia restaurants, Laura LeBlanc said.

“If it did anything, it beefed up and pushed us into a whole new spectrum of service.”

now the owner.

Dronet and his wife Janet have six grown children and each has a college education, he said about Mary Ann LeBlanc, Debbie Halphen, Alfreda Jane Lege, Abby Musselwhite, Cliff Dronet Jr. and Lance Dronet. All live locally except for Lege, of Eunice, Musselwhite, of Oberlin, and Cliff Jr., who recently moved to Houston. Dronet, who loves to play solitaire on his computer, Carmichael said, obviously enjoys the business. “I really do. It started as a hobby and I’ve been a mechanic ever since,” he said.

BEST FAST FOOD O

M

cDonald’s restaurants have undergone a rejuvenation over the past four or five years, with efforts to make the menu more contemporary and to refurbish the restaurants in the area, and diners apparently have noticed.
