Welcome to the Home of Kartchner Caverns State Park and the Bobcats! Nestled in the heart of the San Pedro Valley, Benson is surrounded by majestic mountain ranges and graced with sunny skies and starry nights. Not only is our close-knit community rich with Sonoran Desert scenery, but the history, culture, and charm of the Old West. On January 4, 2021 I was sworn in as the mayor of this historic railroad town. As Mayor, I am committed to serving the citizens of Benson with an open mind and integrity. I consider Benson a very special place to live and am proud to call it my home. As a city, we strive to maintain our core values while welcoming modern ideas and the people who bring them to Benson. I recall when I arrived here thirty years ago that I was welcomed by everyone I met. Thirty years later I realize that I, along with my entire family, carry on that tradition of welcoming others to what is now our home town. It is with honor and great pleasure that I welcome you to Benson. Our city is filled with citizens who hold a deep love for this community, and I thank them wholeheartedly for placing their trust in me and electing me as their Mayor. Benson is a growing community with a future that continues to burn brightly, and I look forward to the accomplishments we can achieve together.
Joe A. Konrad Mayor, City of Benson
Benson’s small town feel is enhanced by a variety of eateries and specialty shops. We are also very proud of the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives in many of our residents, who chose their hometown to start a small business. We would love to welcome you as a visitor or as a new resident. We are here to help you get acquainted with our city, enjoy your stay or get settled in. If you’re already a part of our community, thank you. If you’re considering relocating your home or business to Benson -- or simply thinking about a visit -- please do. You won’t be disappointed. One of the highlights of our community is the Benson Unified School District. Our schools are made up of a dedicated team of administrators, teachers, classified employees, and coaches who are committed to the education and future of our youth. Once familiar with our schools I think you will agree with my dear departed friend, Chic Maldonado, who frequently said, “Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat.” My door is open to the citizens of Benson. Please feel free to share your thoughts, your goals and your concerns with me and the rest of your public servants in City Hall. Together, we have accomplished great things and we will continue on this path of success. By honoring past traditions and forging new ones, we will show Benson’s true potential to those around us. The future is now and I hope you will join me on this journey. 4 BENSON 2021

Saddle up! County offers much to see on horseback
S
outheastern Arizona’s craggy mountain ranges, spectacular rock formations and riparian landscapes are just some of the natural features that contribute to the region’s diverse beauty. Multiple trails crisscross this southeastern-most corner of the state, allowing access to horseback riding, hiking, off-roading and other outdoor activities. Cochise County’s wide open spaces and old west history are why Tombstone Equine Company co-owners Penny Benson and Tieh Streety were drawn to this area. “We came to Tombstone from Cave Creek in 2019 with our horses and mules and relocated our trail riding business here,” Benson said. “We loved Cave Creek, but it was getting too crowded.” Tombstone Equine Company offers horseback riding excursions for all experience levels. “We have horses and mules that we rent, and we welcome people who want to bring their own horses for a guided tour,” Benson said. “Both Tieh and I are passionate about horseback riding and we enjoy sharing our knowledge of horses with others.” Trail rides are tailored to the customers, with one-, two- and three-hour rides, as well as packages that include all-day and sunset rides. “Most of our customers request the two-hour loop ride, which starts at the historic old ghost town of Fairbank, then winds around different points of interest along the San Pedro River,” Benson said. Located within the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, Fairbank is nestled between Whetstone and Tombstone along State Route 82. Settled in 1881 as a railroad stop, remnants of the once-bustling town are still visible. “Fairbank is rich with history,” said Streety while saddling a mustang before heading out on one of the guided rides. “Visitors are always fascinated by the old railroad beds, train trestles and silver mills from Tombstone’s mining heyday. There’s even an 1880s cemetery.” Sprawling cottonwood trees lining the San Pedro River create a haven for wildlife. The rid-

ers encounter deer, javelina and an occasional coyote while exploring the area. A wide variety of bird species is another natural attraction riders enjoy. While the San Pedro Riparian area is a popular trail riding destination, for those who prefer more challenging rides head for the hills and tackle rugged terrain found in the Dragoon, Chiricahua, Whetstone and Huachuca mountains. “The trail options in Cochise County are vast,” said Benson, who has been a professional trail guide since 2004. “Some of our future plans are to hold breakfast and sunset dinner rides. All of our rides are by appointment only because each ride is customized to suit the needs of our clients. We fit the appropriate horse and tack the rider. So give us a call at 520-255-4441, or check us out on Facebook at Tombstone Equine Company. Our email address is tombstoneequinecompany@yahoo.com.”
Need horses? Double R Guest Ranch, 440 W. Cimmaron Lane, in the scenic Rincon Mountains north of Benson, offers horse rentals seven days a week. Tripadvisor has ranked the ranch’s guided rides as Arizona’s No. 1 outdoor adventure. Rides are offered from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. and are catered to every riding ability. Reservations are required. ative Grounds Coffee Stop is a new Benson business that has taken the community by storm.
Kayli Waite started pursuing her dream of starting a family owned and operated coffee shop in August 2019. She created her own business plan, did her own marketing, jumped through the proverbial hoops and dealt with a number of obstacles head-on. Today, while looking at what has become a popular drive-through and walk-up business located at 303 W. Fourth St. in Benson, Waite says it was well worth the effort. “We opened on June 6, 2020, and business has far exceeded all our expectations,” she said. “We were very concerned about how we would do because of the COVID pandemic. We weren’t sure how the community would respond to the business because it’s so unique. All those apprehensions are behind us. This has been an amazing experience.” Native Grounds is designed to serve customers with walk-up and drive-through windows only. Despite the pandemic that has caused so many business closures, Waite’s little coffee shop receives tremendous community support and rave reviews for its hot and cold drinks and quality on-the-go food selections. “We have fantastic coffee and a wide variety of popular drinks,” Waite said. “In the hot summer months, our lemonade and iced drinks are a big hit. Then in cooler weather, customers warm up with a hot cappuccino or breve.” With a drink menu filled with such favorites as lattes, mochas, cappuccino, breve, lemonade, fruit smoothies and Italian sodas, in addition to drip and iced coffee, Native Grounds has something for the whole family. “We are much more than a coffee shop,” Waite said. “We offer a quality ‘food-to-go’ menu with amazing baristas and very popular grilled paninis. We also have a selection of gourmet pastries, which are a big hit.” Even customers’ dogs are given treats when they pull up to the drive-through window.
28 BENSON 2021
“We strive to give our customers the best possible experience,” said Waite, adding, “We want all of you to come back.” Native Grounds enjoys a loyal customer base with several return customers. Wanting to recognize the regulars, Waite established a pointbased loyalty program, as customers receive points for every dollar spent. The points are used to discount future purchases, Waite said. “In addition to our drink selections and food items, we have merchandise for sale. We’ve sold literally hundreds of tumblers, hats, ceramic mugs, hoodies and other merchandise since we’ve opened,” Waite said. “I’m incredibly thankful to our return customers and to our strong social media following.” Customers are urged to visit the newly established Native Grounds website — nativegroundscoffeestop.com — for online orders. Open seven days a week, Native Grounds Coffee Stop’s hours vary.

ne of the features that attracts people to Cochise County is its generally mild weather almost year-round.
A heavy downpour in the mountains fills the myriad washes with such vast amounts of stormwater that it can cause road closings.
There will be an average of 284 days of sun and an average of 55 days of some sort of precipitation from rain to sleet to snow, according to the National Weather Service. What rain does arrive during each much anticipated monsoon from mid-June to mid-September can make travel a bit difficult even though the average rainfall is just 14 inches.
While closures can be an inconvenience, it is one that receives few complaints. The summer rains provide lifesaving water for wildlife and much needed irrigation for yards, gardens, rainwater harvesting systems and the large agricultural industry in the county. The rain also cleans the air of dust and brings with it that unmistakable, musky scent that seems to be the sigh of the desert itself.
Rain falling in the Huachuca, Mules and Chiricahua mountains runs down into the valleys and produces sheetflow, turning the landscape into the look of a massive shallow lake.
With no major sources of pollution, the county’s skies are generally clear and blue by day, though when the clouds begin to build, the shapes created are

spectacular to behold. And, nature always paints the sunrises and sunsets with colors beyond description. Come sundown, the perfect dark of night sets the backdrop for the breathtaking view of the planets and stars to the delight of backyard stargazers and amateur astronomers. During the dry, windy days from March through the start of the monsoon, dust can kick up and create a yellow tint on the horizon. The annual BestPlaces Comfort Index for Cochise County is 8.1 (10 is the highest), which means it is one of the most pleasant places in Arizona. October, April and May are the most pleasurable months in Cochise County, while July and January are the least comfortable.

Rodeo Culture
T
he sport of rodeo is alive and well in Cochise County.
Just ask six-year-old Ryder Smith. The youngster is already making a name for himself in the world of dummy roping, with big plans of becoming a professional roper some day. Smith competed in the kids’ rodeo at the 2020 Benson Butterfield Rodeo, with dummy roping topping his list of favorite activities. The Benson Butterfield Rodeo, a sanctioned Grand Canyon Pro Rodeo Association event, celebrated its 20th anniversary last October with an exciting line-up of rodeo action. Despite COVID concerns, Butterfield drew a large crowd to the Arena Bar in Benson for a packed weekend of family fun. Both days started with a kids’ rodeo where young cowboys and cowgirls tried their hand in mutton bustin’, calf riding and dummy roping, followed by the pro rodeo competition. After months of event cancellations due to COVID, the grandstands were filled with families hungry for opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities. They cheered contestants onto victory, browsed through vendors’ booths and

applauded the quirky antics of rodeo clown Nate “Shotgun” Reed. “The turnout this year was incredible,” rodeo committee President Heather Floyd said. “After 20 years of producing this rodeo, I believe our community enjoyed it more than ever. People want to get out and do things again.” The Butterfield Rodeo is preceded by a four-day Rex Allen Days celebration in Willcox, with a twoday rodeo as the anchor event. Like Butterfield, this is a sanctioned pro rodeo that attracts top competitors from all over Arizona and neighboring states. Held the first weekend in October, Rex Allen Days got its start in 1951 as a two-day event that featured the rodeo, parade and an appearance by Rex Allen himself. Over time, the celebration was extended to four-days of entertainment, gunfight re-enactments, an annual Cowboy Hall of Fame banquet, and much more. The 2021 Rex Allen Days Rodeo in October will mark the event’s 70th anniversary. Wendy and Jeff Hooper, whose two sons compete in junior rodeo throughout Arizona and New Mexico, follow the junior rodeo circuit wherever their sons’ competitions take them.
Benson Butterfield Rodeo saddle bronc rider Jay Joaquin of Sacaton won Butterfield’s bronc riding competition both days of the 2020 rodeo.
in Cochise County “My son, Caden has qualified for the National Junior High School Finals Rodeo for the past two years, when he was in sixth and seventh grade,” Wendy said. “Landon, our younger son, also is a rodeo competitor and loves the sport.” New rodeo events are popping up all over Cochise County, said Wendy, adding that the competitions draw crowds and are entertaining for the whole family. “There’s bull riding in Tombstone, Benson holds regular team ropings at the Arena Bar, and there’s the Willcox West Fest in April with a ranch rodeo competition.” Wendy attributes the sport’s family-oriented atmosphere to its growing popularity among young people, as well as the support youth receive from organizations like the Willcox Junior Rodeo Association. Established in 2013 to provide kids with an opportunity to participate and grow in the sport of rodeo, the association’s membership has experienced tremendous growth in the past few years, Wendy said. “Cochise County’s rodeo culture is booming. Rodeo is a great family sport, and it’s a sport for all ages.”

BENSON HOSPITAL Benson Hospital has been serving the San Pedro Valley community in northwestern Cochise County since 1970. What started as a small community hospital meeting simple needs of patients in the community has grown in response to care for winter visitors and residents. An overwhelming need for an emergency room, additional outpatient services, a testing laboratory, radiology and rehabilitation services was realized and acted upon by the board of directors and staff. In 2007, Benson Hospital opened with eight beds, secured admissions, CT scans, an isolation room with a separate entrance and an urgent care unit. It has been well used since its opening and is accommodating the community and travelers with a 24-hour, on-duty emergency room physician, well-trained staff and ancillary services. Services run across the spectrum of medical care. Benson Hospital has family practi-

tioners, cardiologists, gastroenterologists; practioners in nephrology, orthopedics and podiatry; and midwives. The 22-bed facility provides care to medical and surgical patients and includes a pharmacy. The hospital has six locally based physicians and physician specialists who serve on an appointment basis in areas such as cardiology, podiatry, mammography and rehabilitation. A redesigned emergency room offers a specialized eight-bed unit and provides quality emergency care 24 hours a day, every day of the year. As an Arizona Certified Level IV Trauma Cen-

The Sierra Vista Volunteer Interfaith Caregiver Program (VICaP) a non-profit 501(C)(3) organization, is a Qualifying Charitable Organization for the AZ Tax Credit Program per the Arizona Department of Revenue. Your state tax obligations may be offset dollar for dollar using AZ DOR Form 321. Tax credit limits are $400 for Single/head of household, and $800 for married filing joint return.
