WHOA Fall 2013

AIM

We first heard of HAIM over a year ago when they opened for another one of our WHOA favorites, featured last spring, Electric Guest. The sister trio (Este, 26; Danielle, 23; and Alana Haim, 21) and drummer, Dash Hutton have a spark about them. Hell, they know how to get down owning the stage with crazy drumbeats while these adorable sisters are prancing around, playing various instruments and channeling sounds of the past and future. “We embarrass ourselves pretty much every show we play,” Este says. “We make weird faces and sweat a lot! We aren’t afraid to get grimy or talk to the audience.” We’re kicking ourselves for only now just telling you about this kickass band. Maybe we took them for granted. Then again we have watched Bridesmaids too many times then again whose really counting. But the need for a Wilson Phillips-inspired mix has finally kicked in. “Falling” fits perfectly into that persona along with. HAIM is the next big thing, these sister’s were born into this. They started at a young age playing music with their parents and playing a hodgepodge of gigs. “We love making music, and, as corny as it sounds we’re all just really big fans of each other as musicians,” Este says. “We grew up being best friends and hanging out with each other on the regz. So when we started the band it was a no brainer.” The sister’s formed HAIM years ago but only as of 2012 have they taken their feat seriously. They band has accomplished a lot in a short amount of time. They took SXSW by storm quickly becoming a crowd favorite. They were winners of the BBC sound of 2013. The sister’s are taking it all in stride maintaining their easy-going and eccentric selves. We just want to play out!” Este says. “We are obsessed with playing and seeing people react to our music. I love playing festivals because you get to meet people that you really respect

musically. We tend to get in a bit of trouble when we are around other bands! It’s like summer camp!” We’ve heard of some of these shenanigans. Rumors of fireworks, Mumford and Sons and disaster. We will leave the rest to your imagination. The band lives on the philosophy of fun because “life is too short.” HAIM has caused quite a stir with only a few short EPs under their belt. They’ve already opened and shared stages with esteemed names like Mumford and Sons, Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros, Florence and the Machine and the list goes on. They’ve received high acclaim from numerous other musicians—Rihanna recently tweeted about them. “We listen to a lot of different things,” Este says. “We love pop music and Motown. But we also love 90s R&B and west coast hip hop. Lately we’ve been listening a lot to the Kendrick Lamar record.” The band collaborated with Kid Cudi on his latest album Indicud. Their fan base is vast; listeners of all different genres are taking notice in their uniqueness. HAIM doesn’t fit into one genre, unless you consider “fun” a category. A genre that I’m sure the performer’s are okay with creating as long as dancing is involved. Looking for their album? EPs will have to suffice for the time being. Este shares with us that they are “in the process of putting the finishing touches” on their debut-album. Until then we wait patiently and try to catch the sister’s rocking as many festivals as possible this summer. WHOA: This is a really important question. You have 24 hours left to live. What do you do? ESTE: Find Prince.
