To 23 January 2011 The Land Between Us: place, power and dislocation Focusing on the cultural and political power of landscape art, The Land Between Us presents highlights from the Whitworth’s outstanding collection of historic art alongside recent and contemporary work. All of the Gallery’s Turner watercolours are on show next to Black Audio Film Collective’s Handsworth Songs. Olafur Eliasson transforms one gallery into a forest, and William Holman Hunt meets Larissa Sansour to exchange views of Palestine.

Saturday 2 October, 11am – 12.30pm Urban Wandering: Families Explore Manchester’s environment in unusual ways. A sensory tour lets families taste, hear, smell, see and touch Manchester, ending with an urban picnic.

Saturday 2 October, 1, 2 & 3pm Urban Wandering: Adults Walking tours exploring the ways we use our urban spaces, from urban research and development to free-running and comedy. Take a walk through the City’s landscape as never before.

Saturday 2 October Serious about art… Serious textiles, 11am – 1pm, £5 & Serious life drawing, 2 – 4pm, £5 On the first Saturday of every month the Whitworth hosts a textiles class and life drawing class for adults. Classes last 2 hours and cost £5, materials and refreshments are included.

Saturday 2 October, 6.30 – 9pm, Free Krysko & Kashiwagi... In The Mix A one-off gig, that’s part performance art and part club night for Manchester Weekender. DJ Matthew Krysko & artist Naomi Kashiwagi perform a new collaborative DJ set combining turntables and wind-up gramophones. Also featuring new music from Super Furry Animals' Huw Bunford and an Outsider Art film by Jarvis Cocker.

Saturday 2 October, 5 – 6:30pm, Free PLUS: In The Mix: Screening Journey into The Outside with Jarvis Cocker, a documentary about Outsider Art, will be screened and introduced by a special guest.

Sunday 3 October, 7.30 – 9pm (Doors open at 7pm) Sold out! - A few tickets will be available on the night on the door, £10 per ticket. Close Up feat. Jonathan Franzen Celebrated American novelist Jonathan Franzen reads from his new work Freedom and is in conversation with DJ & writer Dave Haslam. Jonathan Franzen will also be on hand after the event for a book signing session.

Composition by artist Michael Mayhew for Trio Atem (Gavin Osborn- flute, Nina Whiteman- voice, Alice Purton- cello)

Saturday 9 October, 1 – 4.30pm, Free, All ages welcome Big Draw/Big Sound Michael Mayhew and Trio Atem transform your art into sound, using a variety of instruments and soundmaking objects.

Saturday 9 October, 11am – 12:30pm, Free PLUS: Koyaanisquatsi Screening Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance, is a 1982 film directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by Philip Glass.

Thursday 28 October, 6:30 – 9pm, All students welcome The Student Social: The Land Between Us…In The Mix A night of art and music in the mix, curated by students.

Friday 5 November, 11– 7pm, Free Krysko's Moving Pictures A day of house music related films curated by DJ Krysko.

Friday 12th November, 11am – 12:30pm, Free Archival Gathering DJ Krysko mixes music into a real-time photomosiac of the bandstand that used to be in Whitworth Park

& Friday 12th November, 2 – 3:30pm, Free DJ Krysko mixes music, art, archives and architecture into a real-time photomosaic of the Whitworth.

Saturday 13 November, 7-10pm, Free Whitworth In The Mix DJ Krysko and G-Kut DJ and VJ with music, art, archives and architecture. Join us for an immersive evening of new commissioned music and art in the Gallery and park. Inspired by the history and future of the Whitworth. Krysko & Kashiwagi are co-producers for Performing Rights Society for Music Foundation (PRSMF) New Music Plus 2010 at The Whitworth. This pioneering project is a unique opportunity for cutting-edge music producers to work collaboratively with art galleries, theatres and music venues in the North West to produce new music.
