FROM OUR CHAIRS

Thank You Thank you all for your support of the 2017 AOS White Hot Havana Nights Gala. We appreciate you joining us as we raise essential funds for our beloved school. We have been amazed at how our community has come together to make the gala a possibility. In Cuba, one will often hear the phrase “Si, se puede!”, which translates to “Yes, it can be done!”. To the underwriters, donors, committee members, volunteers, room parents, the phenomenal AOS teachers and staff, and all our families – without you the gala cannot come to fruition and be successful, but with you, It Can Be Done! We are ever so grateful for the support, encouragement, and comradery and hope that you enjoy a fun-filled Cuban inspired evening! Salud! Shelly Katz & Debbie McBride 2017 Gala Co-Chairs

BIG BOARD: ART / FOR THE HOME

Artwork by Sarah Lamb

Sarah Lamb is a talented and dynamic realist painter. With classical skill—and through transparency, depth and texture—she captures the minute details of everyday objects in her dramatic still lifes and luscious landscapes. She makes us love the familiar and see beauty in the mundane. Born in Petersburg, VA, with a passion for art and an appreciation for the past, Sarah spent a semester at the Studio Art Center International in Florence, Italy before graduating from Brenau Women’s College with a BS degree in Studio Art in 1993. Following a summer workshop in Santa Fe, NM with renowned classical painter Jacob Collins, she spent two years painting at The Ecole Albert Defois in the Loire Valley with classical realist artist Ted Seth Jacobs. In 1997 she moved to New York and spent the next 6 years studying and painting under Jacob Collins at the Water Street Atelier. During this time, she had successful one-woman shows in major galleries in Atlanta, Houston, and San Francisco and was represented in art galleries in Alexandria, VA, St. Simon’s Island and Gainesville, GA, Sag Harbor, NY and Madison, CT. More recently, she has had sell-out, one-woman shows at the Spanierman Gallery in NY, the Meredith Long Gallery in Houston, TX and the John Pence Gallery in San Francisco. She has been featured in magazines such as American Artists, American Art Collector and Southwest Art as one of America’s most talented young painters. British-born art critic, John A. Parks, wrote that "Sarah Lamb brings to her work a robustly sensual grasp of the world. Her keenness of eye and joyful brush make the whole enterprise feel freshly alive as she reminds us what the really wonderful things in life are." Sarah’s Work can be found at www.sarahlamb.net This piece is being created for AOS and will be unveiled the night of the GALA! DONATED BY: AOS MOM SARAH LAMB LARNED

Artwork by Michael DesRosiers

Bid on one (or all) of these groupings of six spectacular paintings created by critically acclaimed artist Michael DesRosiers. Paintings are paired and may also be purchased as a group of six. This is an extraordinary opportunity to own DesRosiers’ original artwork. Michael DesRosiers creates paintings and works on paper. Represented by CUSP NYC Gallery, his recent mixed media series combines layers of delicate translucent paint films, often augmented with printing, over previously painted surfaces interwoven with paper. This process requires intensive focus on the inherent and gestural properties of paint, one layer to the next. In these works the dynamic forces of nature are explored by the artist. DesRosiers moves from small to large scale works easily, as well as creating varied installations of both vertical and horizontal grids. Cued by Color, a solo exhibition at the Lyman Allyn Museum of Art explored his unique aesthetic. “My paintings are highly chromatic complex accumulations of the act of painting as well as metaphors for the increasing density of contemporary life… a place where observation and memory connect in the most intimate way” --- Michael DesRosiers DONATED BY: MICHAEL DESROSIERS

“Lily of the Field” by Mary Quiros

Mary is a native of Laredo, Texas, a border community with Mexico. Her own heritage and the vibrant colors of this unique culture explode in her work. In 1977, after painting in oils and acrylics for seven years, Mary found fluidity of expression in watercolor. Though she often mixes other media, she states that there is such a harmony between watercolor and the creative process, that is a joy to work with it. Mary’s eyes are her art. She draws from the small blossom, the obscure window and the silence of a silhouette. The observer finds a lively, energetic color that is most unusual in the watercolor medium. Mary has had the opportunity to show one of her watercolor pieces at the Contemporary Museum of Modern Art in Nigata, Japan, and received the Award of Excellence. She was featured in the Texas Watercolor Society publication “Fifty Years of Excellence” and the summer edition of Watercolor Magazine, both 1999 editions. The Laredo Center for the Arts exhibited her works in a “one woman” show in 1998, 2002, 2004, and 2007. In 2003, Mary was juried into the 13th edition of the “Encyclopedia of Living Artists” in America and in 2005 the 14th Edition of Living Artists. Another work, “Mariposas” was published in a North Light Book for artists entitled “Splash 8”. Mary’s work can be found at Red and White Gallery, Fayetteville, Texas and Art Connections in Bastrop, Texas. HIGHLIGHTS: • Original art by award-winning artist Mary Quiros • Watercolor on paper • 30” x 22” DONATED BY: AOS GRANDMOTHER MARY QUIROS

FOURTH GRADE 4th Grade “I Love AOS Olympics” Canvas

I love AOS Olympics! The 4th grade class has created* a wonderfully detailed canvas depicting one of the most loved days of the year, Olympics!  Each student drawing depicts a favorite AOS Olympic memory. FIFTH GRADE 5th Grade Faith, Obedience, Peace & Love Mosaic

The 5th grade incorporated their religious studies into this beautiful wooden mosaic cross.* Each tile of this wooden cross is a symbol from the Old Testament that the students have studied in Religion class this year. Each student depicted his or her favorite symbol because of what it means.  Noah’s Ark teaches us to be faithful. The Ten Commandments established God’s rules to live by. The Olive Branch symbolizes a peaceful new beginning. Moses’ Staff represents God’s power. The Dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit. The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil teaches us that we should listen to God.  All of the symbols are how God shows his love for us. * project is in progress. Facilitated by: Meredith Wise, Thalia Gazis, Rob Wise, Belinda McGinty

SIXTH GRADE 6th Grade Pressed Greek Icon

Icons (from the Greek eikones) are sacred images representing the saints, Christ, and the Virgin, as well as narrative scenes such as Christ’s Crucifixion. Each student in 6th grade has “tooled” or pressed a line in this icon of the Pantokrator, Christ.  This icon uses the design from iconographer, Diamantis Cassis, who created some of the icons in the cathedral.  His daughter and artist, Joni Zavitsanos, assisted in the creation of this icon using his techniques. In this icon Christ is represented not in whole body form to remind us that we, as the people of Christ, are his body and do his work. Here the 6th grade class is doing the work of Christ by participating in the oldest form of Christian art, still practiced in the Orthodox Faith for over 2000 years, showing an unbreakable tie throughout the centuries with Christ and His Apostles Facilitated by: Meredith Wise, Joni Zavitsanos (artist), Rob Wise, Thalia Gazis, Belinda McGinty
