There is no shortage of history to learn about Whitecourt and the area. The best place to stop is Whitecourt’s Heritage Park. It is located at the Forest Interpretive Centre. Outside, you can tour buildings (during the summer months) that tell a story of how people of years past lived. Early settlers either worked on the railway or homesteaded, trapped or traded furs. The first settlers originated from Britain, the United States, Germany, Sweden and other parts of Canada.

In 1910, the name Whitecourt was chosen in response to population growth and the establishment of the post office. Settlers continued to arrive, awaiting the construction of the railway. The rail line was delayed, first by an economic downturn, and then by World War I. In August 1919, work finally began on laying the

The forestry industry remains a vibrant part of the local economy to this day. The oil boom reached Whitecourt in the 1950s when Canadian Fina Oil bought the West Whitecourt block. In 1954, Windfall Field was discovered and started a boom for the area. In 1962, the West Whitecourt Plant at Windfall was completed. Numerous oil and gas companies have offices in the Whitecourt area today. The community was incorporated as a village in 1959 and became a town in 1961.

World’s Largest Wagon Wheel and Pick

ECHOES OF THE PAST

Journey to Bethlehem Catholic Church, with refreshments hosted at the Friendship Centre. As the nativity walk-through is held entirely outdoors, proper winter attire is recommended.

SNAKE PIT

Fort Assiniboine WAGON WHEEL Perhaps one of the best photo opportunities in Woodlands County is the World’s Largest Wagon Wheel and Pick. Located in the hamlet of Fort Assiniboine, the grand wagon wheel stands an impressive seven metres high, while the pick reaches just over six metres.

MUSEUM During the Hudson Bay era, Fort Assiniboine was used as a supply and transportation point. It is also the second-oldest fort in Alberta and the first documented fur-trading site.

More information about the area can be found just a few steps away from the wagon wheel at the Fort Assiniboine Museum. The museum is a historical building and houses artifacts that tell the story of how people lived in the area decades ago. The museum building is a replica of the Hudson Bay-style buildings. If you pack yourself a lunch you can relax on the covered deck that overlooks the Athabasca River (see photo below).

FERRY Have you ever been on a ferry? Just outside of Fort Assiniboine is the Klondyke Ferry - only one of seven still remaining in the province. The ferry connects Highway 661 over the Athabasca River. Built in 1983, the free-cable ferry can carry 13 mid-sized cars and 50 passengers over the 230-metre crossing. Ferry operating hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. daily from early May to November 14 at noon.

SANDHILLS

BETHLEHEM

While in the area, take time to walk through the trails at the Fort Assiniboine Sandhills Wildland Provincial Park. If you have your own horse it is a perfect place for a trail ride.

Every year, hundreds of people visit Fort Assiniboine for an annual Christmas tradition, “Journey to Bethlehem.”

While ATV riding is not allowed in the park, directly across from it is a campground with sand dunes for the off-highway vehicle enthusiast. This site is located just a few kilometres from the Klondyke Ferry.

CAMPING

Fort Assiniboine

12

Your Guide to Whitecourt & Woodlands County whitecourtwoodlandstourism.com

There are numerous camping locations in the Fort Assiniboine area. One such campground offers up a bit of adrenaline with your stay - if you so choose. The Woodlands RV Park and Marina offers visitors the chance to take a jet boat ride down the Athabasca River. To book your ride call 780-584-2222 or email woodlandsrvpark@gmail.com.

The tradition was started in 1998 by the Fort Assiniboine Friends Christian Community and takes visitors on a non-denominational 20 minute interactive play through the journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem to register for the census, and understand what Mary and Joseph experienced more than 2,000 years ago. Visitors will encounter soldiers, beggars, shepherds, and a prophet on their way to see the stable where Jesus is born. The walk-through nativity story starts at the St. John Vianney Catholic Church on Main Street in Fort Assiniboine and ends at the Friendship Centre or museum. The event runs from 6:30pm - 8:30 p.m. on November 17-18 & 2425. Music and entertainment is featured at the

In the heart of the county lies an intriguing tourist attraction. A garter snake pit; a site inhabited by snakes for a limited time in the spring. Located beside the museum on Main Street in Fort Assiniboine, the snake pit is a fenced-in area where the species breed at specific times throughout the year. The pit holds hundreds of snakes and signs provide information on the species and breed. This is a free attraction located next to the museum. The snakes are safe and won’t hurt humans. They are kept in a fenced area for their own protection.

Logging Days Blue Ridge Recreation Area Located in Woodlands County, just 4 kilometres north of the hamlet of Blue Ridge is an ultimate opportunity to connect with nature. What was once a gravel pit is now a recreation area that offers hiking, biking, bird watching, fishing, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. This area is for non-motorized activities only so the only power fueling your activities is your own energy. The Blue Ridge Recreation Area offers 3 kilometres of trails.

Family Fun Day

It might only be a hamlet of 250 people but it won’t seem like it from all you can enjoy there. One of the highlights this community offers is the annual Blue Ridge Logging Days event hosted by the Blue Ridge Community League. Held from September 7 to 9, this three day event is packed full of entertainment and competitions for the whole family. Unwind and put on your dancing shoes

Fishing enthusiasts will be intrigued to know that the south lake is stocked annually with 2,100 15-20 centimetre long trout from the Cold Lake fishing hatchery and it is now managed as a “quality stocked trout fishery.” The recreation area was named for its close proximity to the vibrant community of Blue Ridge.

but memberships can be purchased to support the work and maintenance provided by the Whitecourt Mountain Bike Association.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

The Association’s vision is to develop, maintain and promote the best possible mountain biking opportunities around the Whitecourt area, while ensuring responsible and safe practices in environmental conservation, trail construction, trail maintenance and riding.

Skateboard Park Visitors can show off their best tricks or watch the accomplished local skaters at the Skateboard Park in Whitecourt. Skateboard Park is located on the corner of Highway 43 & Pine Road. Construction of the park was achieved through countless volunteer hours and the donation of materials. It was designed with a circle flow, created by Jim Barnum, Spectrum Skatepark Creations Ltd. President and skateboarder.

The circular layout of the park’s features lends itself to the skateboarders travelling in one direction, preventing them from running into each other and getting injured. The plaza-style design includes many street skateboarding features, something local skaters express great enthusiasm about.

Mountain Biking If you are looking for an exhilarating way to spend the afternoon, give the Whitecourt Mountain Bike Park a shred. Situated on the east side of town, the park offers an array of trails, dirt jumps and drop zones. The amenities are free to the public

The association was incorporated in 2011 allowing it to begin the process of fundraising for special projects to keep the trails fun for everyone. Recently, with the funds the association has collected through various fundraisers and membership sales, it has been working on a fourphase construction project to revive the trails. The Association has included the trail systems, as well as trails throughout Whitecourt, in the app Trailforks. Trailforks, provides geo referenced mapping for more than 80,000 trails worldwide.

Come out and meet members of the Association during Whitecourt’s Canada Day festivities as they raffle off a top-ofthe-line mountain bike.

FOR MORE INFORMATION check out the website at bikewhitecourt.com

The Skatepark includes stairs, rails, hips (two ramps placed together at an angle), and hubbas (ledges running alongside sets of stairs).

The gracious and beautiful McLeod River flows northeast down from the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies. The river begins just outside the western border of Jasper National Park and snakes through the foothills before meeting the Athabasca River. To stand at the point where these two rivers meet and experience the difference in the strength of current, one must venture to the Riverboat Park. It is located in Whitecourt behind the Sagitawah RV Park off Highway 43. It is here where you can see the line that divides the Athabasca and McLeod Rivers.

Not only is tubing a great way to take in the natural beauty of the forest surrounding the river banks and catch an occasional glimpse of wildlife, but it’s economical too. Several retail stores in the area sell various water shoes, tubes, paddles, and ropes to tie you and your fellow tubers together. There is no charge to set sail on the McLeod River. The trip can be anywhere from two-and-ahalf to four hours, depending on the time of year and speed of the current.

SNOWMOBILE CAPITAL

Snowmobiling in Whitecourt & Woodlands County What better place to snowmobile but in the Snowmobile Capital of Alberta. It’s a title Whitecourt boasts often. Whitecourt was the first town in Western Canada to host an X-Games freestyle snowmobile competition. Woodlands County easily draws in hundreds of snowmobilers every year, especially for the Whitecourt Trailblazer’s Rally.

WHITECOURT TRAILBLAZERS Since 1979 the club has been grooming trails and hosting rallies simply for the enjoyment of sledders. One of the highlights for the club is the Family Day snowmobile rally, which attracts upwards of 800 snowmobilers from across the province each year.

2017 SNOWRIDERS WEST AWARDS INCLUDE: 1. Favourite Scenic Snowmobiling Area in Alberta – Platinum 2. Favourite Overall Snowmobiling Area in Alberta – Platinum

42

3. Favourite Groomed Trail Riding in Alberta – Platinum 4. Favourite Powder Riding in Alberta – Platinum 5. Most Challenging Riding Area in Alberta - Platinum 6. Favourite Area for Family Snowmobiling in Alberta – Platinum Local Trailblazer, Cyril Lanctot, was honoured this year with the Alberta Snowmobile Association Lifetime Achievement Award. Lanctot has been a member of the Trailblazers for almost 40 years, during which time he has contributed to the club and community by participating in fundraisers, party planning, grooming trails and spearheading many tours for specific community groups. Trailblazers prides itself on being a community organization and welcomes everyone to enjoy the trails and all they have to offer.

THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE The Golden Triangle Trail has helped to establish Whitecourt, Swan Hills, County of Greenview and Fox Creek area as the premier snowmobiling destination in Alberta. It truly is the place for a “golden” sled experience. The roughly 350 kilometre trail system (220 miles) loops through the rugged boreal forests of central Alberta linking the communities of Whitecourt, Fox Creek and Swan Hills. These trails are accessible seven days a week and have multiple access points. The well-marked, open trail passes through some of Alberta’s finest scenery. The variety of terrain serves up flat stretches for the speedsters interspersed with enough hills to add some thrills. This trail can provide a

challenge for the most experienced rider or a wonderful experience for you and the family. New warm-up facilities have been added to the Eagle River Staging Area, located on Hwy 32N, and Groat Creek Group Campground staging area, located 25kms south on Hwy 32 so sledders can warm their fingers before heading off on the trails. Washrooms are available at both of these locations. The local sledding clubs, Whitecourt Trailblazers, Northland Sno-Goers and the Swan Hills Snow Goers, with the help of Alberta Sustainable Resources Development and the municipalities of Whitecourt,

Woodlands County, Fox Creek and Swan Hills have partnered to ensure the Golden Triangle is groomed and that well-marked trails are maintained. All the clubs have maps of their trails as well as the Golden Triangle.

FOR MORE INFORMATION:

www.thegoldentriangle.ca MEDIA RIDE Whitecourt Trailblazers host an annual VIP & Media Ride in January. We encourage anybody to attend. We invite MLAS, MPS,

Mayors, Town and County Councillors, Travel Alberta, Alberta Tourism, Alberta Parks and Environment and Media from Alberta. We host a guided tour on our trails with lunch and appetizers being provided by sponsors.

WORLD SNOWMOBILE INVASION In recent years, Whitecourt has been known to be a small community with big potential. Not only did the club host the first-ever X-Games freestyle snowmobile competition in Western Canada but it also hosted a million-dollar, five-day World Snowmobile Invasion in 2015. The event involved two years of planning in partnership with municipal and provincial governments.

Hometown Heroes Air Show 2018

Known to be one of the best air shows in Alberta, the Hometown Heroes Air Show is taking flight July 28-29, 2018. For a decade this annual event has been drawing crowds from across Alberta because of its thrilling entertainment. Thousands of people gather to enjoy the action packed weekend. This year onlookers will be entertained as the RCAF Snowbirds, CF-18 Hornet and CF Skyhawks Parachute Teams dance across the sky along with other aerobatic performers. The event is held at the Whitecourt Airport located east of town on Highway 32. There is ample parking available on site for all visitors.

In addition to the aircrafts, there will be a Kidz Zone, static display, trade market, car show and military vehicles on display for everyone to enjoy. Everything about our Small Town Air Show is Large.

of military aircraft during training exercises. These aircraft range from a Hercules C130 to F18 hornets to Bell 412 helicopters. All of these machines are a spectacle to behold. While medical emergencies are never a positive event, the Whitecourt Airport is a suitable landing location for all of the STARS helicopters, including the newest and largest helicopter the AgustaWestland AW139. Though less frequent than the helicopter medical services, fixed wing medivac flights do also make use of the airfield.

Whitecourt Airport

Whitecourt Airport For our friends who take flight and are looking for a place to get away for the weekend, we can welcome you to our area thanks to our municipal airport.

The local airport also offers fuel sales of AVGAS and Jet Fuel available Monday to Friday. Call out services are available on the weekends as well.

The Whitecourt Airport is located 3.5 nautical miles - or 6.5 kilometres - from Whitecourt along Highway 32. The 5,800 foot paved runway is not only attractive for its length but also because there are no landing fees. The airport has both shortterm and long-term tie down spaces along with aircraft overnight locations.

Inside the terminal, there is a Nav Canada flight service station that provides advisory services from 6 am to 10 pm every day. The terminal also houses a car rental booth, a telephone, restrooms and the aiport manager’s office.

AIRPORT DRAWS AIRPLANES, MILITARY AND HELICOPTERS The Whitecourt Airport is a hub of transportation for personnel in the forestry as well as the oil and gas industry. Most days at least one charter (privately hired) aircraft will arrive and depart with a manifest of passengers and crew. Corporate jets spending the day are also common. These aircraft transport anywhere from 6 to 18 employees at speeds up to 980kph. Due to the long runway and proximity to both the Edmonton and Cold Lake airports, the Whitecourt Airport has played host to a number

We are conveniently located as a suitable refuelling and overnight stop for bush pilots travelling to Alaska. These aircraft typically have 1 or 2 seats and are specially designed for the demanding terrain and the short takeoffs and landings needed to operate in the wilds of Alaska. Our local forestry base employs 3 seasonal staff and can be a home away from home to water bomber crews from across Alberta if the weather is right (or wrong) across Canada. We regularly see single engine Fireboss aircraft as well as the enormous Electra water bombers and their support aircraft.

forest fires in both the search for new fires and dropping water once a fire has been found.

NORTHERN AIR The Town of Whitecourt and Woodlands County were proud to recently welcome Northern Air to the Whitecourt Airport. Northern Air’s direct service provides flights every Tuesday. The primary aircraft used is a Beechcraft Kingair 200 with an 8-seat configuration, with a larger Beechcraft 1900D seating 19 as a secondary aircraft. While the new service was spurred by regional oil and gas operations, the transportation link will provide an important social and leisure link to those who call the area home. It will be quick, convenient, and affordable to those looking for a getaway and will open up international travel opportunities and the flight options available through the Calgary International Airport. Bookings can be made through Northern Air’s toll free number 1-800-661-1911 or on their website, flynorthernair.com

HIGH FLYING FOR THE FUN OF IT A number of private pilots operate out of our airport. The Canadian Operators and Pilots Association (COPA) chapter 185 is based in Whitecourt. These dedicated individuals act as ambassadors to other private pilots flying through the area. The club now offers the opportunity to learn to fly and earn your pilot’s license. The members of COPA 185 are also dedicated to passing their passion of flying on to the youth in our community with programs such as COPA for Kids. This nationally-recognized program introduces children age 8-17 to the excitement and wonder of flight. Local pilots volunteer their time and aircraft for no reason other than to enjoy a day of flying while bringing smiles to first-time fliers. For more information about COPA 185, check out their website at whitecourtflyingclub.com.

A large part of the activity at the airport is rotary wing or helicopter traffic. With a year-round flight school and 4 other helicopter centric commercial operations based on the field, at times it may seem to be more of a heliport as opposed to an airport. These aircraft support both the oil and gas industry and the forestry industry with regular surveys and patrols. Helicopters are also a staple in the fight against

HARD LUCK CANYON TRAIL MAP

Hard Luck Canyon No matter what motivates you to connect with mother nature, let Hard Luck Canyon inspire you! Carved by Hard Luck Creek through the sandstone layers of the Paskapoo Formation, Hard Luck Canyon is a unique geological feature within Woodlands County.

Follow the hard packed gravel trails to the lookout bridge located at the canyon’s edge for the best view. The bridge spans the falls, which are fed from a beaver pond that typically overflows in the spring. Venture down the series of stairs and paths to the canyon floor to get a closer look at Hard Luck Creek and the canyon walls.

Take a walk back in time to when the canyon was formed by following the informative signage on the trail to the bridge and finally to the canyon floor.

BACK TO NATURE

E.S. Huestis

The E.S. Huestis Demonstration Forest The E.S. Huestis Demonstration Forest is a great place to walk and stretch your legs, and learn something about this area’s natural resources. The forest is only minutes from Whitecourt, just north of the Highway 43/Highway 32 junction. The site includes a self-guided tour with information kiosks, hiking trails, a tree garden, day-use parking and washroom facilities. The driving or walking tour follows a 7-kilometre road loop, embedded within 10 acres of working forest.

The E.S. Huestis Demonstration Forest was developed as an area focused around the concepts of demonstration and learning. Since 2006, the Huestis Demonstration Forest Partnership has worked hard to renew, repair and revitalize the site. It has added educational signs, kiosks, picnic tables, bear proof garbage cans and new hiking trails.

GEOCACHING

The forest is open during daylight hours, from about mid-May to mid-October. For more information contact Whitecourt’s local Environment and Parks office at 780-778-7153.

A typical cache is a small container that holds a log book and treasure, such as a toy or trinket. The idea of geocaching is to find a cache, take something from the cache, leave something in the cache and write about it in the log book.

Geocaching

Geocaching is a popular activity because it’s easy, fun and free. Participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) or other techniques to hide and seek geocaches anywhere in the world. In Whitecourt and Woodlands County there are several geocaching sites to be found.

Today, 350,000 geocaches are placed in 220 countries around the world and are registered on various websites. A great place to start is at www.geotourismcanada.com. One never knows what the person before might have left. Since you must leave something in the cache for the next person who finds it, some good ideas for items are maps, books, software, hardware, CDs, videos, pictures, jewelry, tickets, games or antiques. 52

FISHING With all of the beautiful bodies of water and large forested areas in the area, it’s no wonder why Woodlands County is such a

popular place for hunting and fishing. One of the popular fishing spots in the area is at Carson-Pegasus Provincial Park, located about 28 kilometres northwest of Whitecourt. Both the Athabasca and McLeod rivers are popular fishing spots as well. Alberta residents under the age of 16 and over 65 need not worry about a fishing license, as it’s not required. But for everybody else, different bodies of water have different regulations, and fishers are required to have a sportfishing license. Season gates, equipment requirements, limits of fish, size of fish and other regulations can be found in the fishing guide, which can be purchased from the following vendors: Moose Country Petro Canada Station, Canadian Tire and Big Guy Outdoor Sports, all located on Highway 43 in Whitecourt. Stocked waterbodies in Whitecourt and area include: • Rotary Park Pond • Emerald Lake • McLeod Lake • Paddle River Dam Pond • Schuman Lake • Dolberg Lake • Trapper Lake • Blue Ridge Recreation Area.

ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS

Local Wildlife MOOSE SMART •

If your dog barks or gives chase, the moose may defend itself by kicking the dog or pursuing it—right back to you! Always keep your dog on a leash.

• If a moose charges, get behind something solid like a tree or vehicle and use it as a shield.

BEAR SMART If a bear has spotted you it may stand on its hind legs and swing or elevate its head to pick up your smell. It is trying to identify you. If surprised, it may suddenly wheel around or rise quickly with its ears back and hair erect. This bear has been frightened but is not necessarily aggressive. 56

• An air horn, to allow them to avoid you.

Avoid confrontations with moose by giving them plenty of space. Cow moose can be especially dangerous as they will defend their calves.

• Never approach a moose. If you encounter a moose, walk away slowly and do not run.

Bear spray, only for use if the animal is closing in on you. Aim for a bear’s eyes. This may stop the attack and allow you to escape.

• A walking stick, for fighting. • A cellphone to call for help if you are treed or otherwise trapped or if you are hurt. Do not run from a bear. You cannot outrun it. In any encounter you should be talking calmly and backing away toward cover, giving the animal time and room to retreat on its own. Grizzlies and black bears can climb trees so this manoeuvre may only have the advantage of causing a bear to feel less threatened. It would be wise for a person to carry four different items in a bush environment in case of encounters with cougars, bears or moose:

COUGAR SMART Cougars are elusive masters of camouflage and typically avoid contact with people. Consequently, cougar sightings and encounters are rare. Encounters between cougars and livestock, pets and people are more likely where human populations have increased in rural and wooded areas. However, a cougar will usually notice your presence and leave before you even realize it is there. IF YOU ENCOUNTER A COUGAR: • Never approach cougars. • Always know where the cougar is and leave space for it to easily escape.

BIRD WATCHING Birding, or bird watching, is an easy hobby to take up. The prospective birder needs only three things: a bird guide, binoculars and a healthy dose of curiosity and interest in the natural world. Luckily, the Whitecourt and Woodlands County area is perfect for birding with different areas providing a diverse variety of birds to see. Carson-Pegasus Provincial Park has a wide range of different birds. Some are more

Carson-Pegasus Provincial Park The picturesque Carson-Pegasus Provincial Park is well known as a great fishing spot. However, it offers much more. Located just 28 kilometres from Whitecourt, the provincial park includes two lakes McLeod Lake and Little McLeod Lake. The more developed of the two is McLeod Lake. Whether it’s adventure or relaxation you are looking for, you will find it here. Let the beauty of the mixed-wood forests of aspen,

balsam fir, balsam poplar and white spruce surround you as you explore one of the many well-marked trails. Clear your mind as you fish for fresh pike in the clear waters of the lakes. Stop to witness nature at its finest in the midst of a variety of mammals and bird species. Now let’s go have an adventure! Motor boats, rowboats, canoes, paddle boats and kayaks are available to rent at McLeod Lake. Carson-Pegasus Provincial Park is also the ideal place to camp with your family, whether for a weekend or overnight on your way to Alaska. AMENITIES • 181 private campsites to accommodate RV or tent campers (41 powered sites) • 80 reservation sites • Group camping, perfect for family reunions and larger gatherings • Clean toilet and shower facilities

• Wide variety of hiking and nature trails • Boat rentals • Boat launch and seawall for fishing • Playground • Food concession • Coin laundry FISHING • McLeod Lake – Rainbow Trout • Little McLeod Lake – Northern Pike, Whitefish and Perch TRAILS • The Backcountry Trail goes along the lakeshore for nearly five and a half kilometres and starts at the McLeod Lake boat launch parking lot or the group use area. The trail is a combination of gravel and grass surfaces. • Lakeshore Trail is a shorter trail which also follows the lakeshore just below the campground loops. It is a 1.7 kilometre trail with grass and gravel surfaces, starting at the Penninsula boat launch. TO GET TO CARSON-PEGASUS PROVINCIAL PARK • Travel 6 kilometres west on Highway 43 from Whitecourt • Travel 11 kilometres north on Highway 32 • Signs will take you the rest of the way

rare and will be seen by dedicated birders and those who get a lucky sighting.

SLEEP UNDER THE STARS

Carson-Pegasus Provincial Park provides some great birding opportunities for water birds. The park contains Canada Geese, Mallards, Ring-necked Ducks, Great Blue Heron, Solitary Sandpipers, Red-necked Grebe and Boneparte’s Gulls. Carson-Pegasus also has some rare birds for the lucky, or very dedicated, birder to spot. These are the Trumpeter Swan, the Belted Kingfisher, Sora, Ospreys, the Bald Eagle and the American Bittern. A lot of the fun of birding is the anticipation of tracking down a species that has eluded you, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t check them all off your list in the first outing. Just keep trying and looking forward to the day when you spot your first Bald Eagle!
