Drilling and Cutting Safety in Construction
Source : flattop341 The need to use the right tools is crucial to drilling and cutting safety. It is also crucial to use the correct bit or blade to ensure accuracy when cutting, drilling and hammering concrete. The most common risk involved with cutting and drilling is when the incorrect materials are used causing the bit to snap off damaging equipment and injuring workers nearby. Workers whose job it is to cut or drill should be provided with the appropriate PPE to perform this task, which cover their eyes and ears in particular. This is because drilling and cutting concrete causes dust and particles to be expelled into the air. The small particles emitted by the cutting or drilling process combine with the dust that forms from the concrete cutting and can enter the lungs and affect the breathing. It can also enter the throat and cause irritation or internal injuries. When engaging in this dangerous task, a fellow worker should be standing by in case of an emergency. The appropriate PPE should be utilised, such as the correct safety boots to protect your feet from falling concrete and thick padded gloves to minimise the risk of cutting your hands or crushing your fingers. It is also a loud activity and so hearing protection should also be used.
