welcome Although running is considered an individual sport, the passion we all share as runners creates a strong bond that brings us together. From the stories we enjoy during the carbo load dinners, to the high fives we receive from new friends after we cross the finish line, The North Face Whistler Half Marathon embodies this reunion of communities coming together for a greater cause - to raise funds and awareness for Crohn's and Colitis Canada. There's no experience quite like running in congenial company with the picturesque setting of the town of Whistler as our canvas. Whether you're running your first 10k or trying to beat your personal best in the half, take a second to appreciate your surroundings, fellow running mates, and volunteers. On behalf of The North Face, thank you for coming together and giving back by taking part in this run. Best of luck on race day and don't forget to give your new friends a well deserved high five as they cross the finish line with you.

Jano Arabaghian, The North Face (Canada)

On behalf of the Board of Directors and Organizing Committee for The North Face Whistler Half Marathon, we welcome you to Canada’s hottest half marathon and to the Coast Mountains of British Columbia. I look forward to seeing you at the start (and finish) line on race day. Thank you for choosing The North Face Whistler Half Marathon and 10km for your 2014 race schedule.

Dave Clark, Race Director

volunteers I athlete gear drop | contest Over 100 volunteers have devoted their personal time to helping The North Face Whistler Half Marathon be the event it is today. Please take a moment to thank a volunteer or two, as without them this event simply would not happen. You will see volunteers at the start and finish lines, on course, at package pick up, the carbo load dinner, and awards ceremony. Race Management is very thankful for the dedicated volunteers and wishes them as much fun and excitement as each of the athletes.

course maps | aid stations

Five aid stations are placed along the race route and are located at the following approximate distances: 4.5 km, 8.5km (10km course only) 9.5 km, 11.5 km, 15 km, 18 km. Aid stations provide hydration with water and Powerade, as well as a first aid attendant and washrooms. Aid station locations can be found on the course map. Each kilometre is marked along the course, along with halfway and onekilometre-to-go marks. The course will remain open for 4 hours, at which point signs, aid stations, course markers and marshals will be removed from the course. If you expect that you may be longer than the allowable 4 hours, please plan to take a course map with you and be advised that services at the finish line may be limited.

little rippers

The Little Rippers Kids Run is a fun 1 kilometre run for kids of all ages, but aimed primarily at those aged 5 to 9. The 1 km route makes it’s way through Whistler Village along the Village Stroll, with a turn around point and aid station (refreshments) at the halfway point. Little Rippers celebrate their achievements when crossing the same big finish line located at the cauldron in Whistler Olympic Plaza. Spectator viewing is available all along the run route, and for those kids who are a bit nervous – mom and dad are welcome to accompany them in the run.

course safety Runner safety is of the utmost importance. Please note that this is NOT a closed course. Certain lanes on municipal roads are closed in the early kilometres of the race, however much of the course travels on open road and paved trail systems. Traffic of all kinds could be present at anytime and thus runners need to be aware of their surroundings at all times. Other runners, pedestrians, cars, buses, and animals could be encountered at any point along the race course. As such we make the following recommendations for your safety: Always be aware of your surroundings Do not run with earphones; if you do, keep volume low so you can hear traffic Baby strollers/joggers are not permitted on the race course Do not pass other runners outside of marked lanes Be aware of buses near bus stops Watch for vehicles pulling out of private driveways Share the road and trail with cyclists and pedestrians Black bears are very much a part of life in Whistler, and are very active in the valley during the month of June as they have recently just exited their winter dens. Be aware of cubs and yearlings - where there is a young bear there is likely a momma bear too! For more information on bears and what you should do if you encounter a bear, please visit

timing I photography I race merchandise Timing — Partnering with Race Day Timing we are using Chronotracks’ latest technology - the “B” tag timing system which allows for race timing down to 1/1000 of a second. The timing chip is embedded in a label on your race bib, and stays there, removing the additional step of securing it to your shoe like other timing systems. Live results are posted online so your friends and family can get up to the minute results of your half-way split and overall finish time. The link will be live on race day. Please note that prize money for overall results and awards for age groups will be awarded on gun time, not chip time.

Photography— Photography Robert Shaer Photography is the official photography service for The North Face Whistler Half Marathon. Professional photographers will be located at the start and finish line as well as along the race course. Be sure to smile for the camera! Robert Shaer Photography will endeavour to get at least one image of each athlete which will be available for download following the race. Official race day photography should be available within 72 hours of the race finish. A link to the online store will be sent out once all of the images are available.

Race Merchandise— Merchandise The North Face has produced a collection of official race merchandise items available for purchase from The North Face booth at package pick up. In addition, race merchandise will be available at The North Face Store in Whistler Village in the weeks leading up to the event.

The start and finish lines are conveniently placed at the same location making it easy for spectators to cheer on the athletes at the beginning and end of the race without having to move an inch! Spectators can also make their way to a few of our prime viewing locations indicated on the course map in this guide.
