Since the first of July, salmon fishermen have been battling gusty winds and thick fog at times to catch the much anticipated summer salmon. In addition to weather, it seems as if it’s been bumper to bumper boats on the fishing grounds, mainly caused by this year’s heavy restrictions set by the WDFW. Despite these challenges, good numbers of salmon are being put on the decks of persistent sportsmen.

One of the more productive marine areas since opening July 16 has been Area 9 at Mid-Channel Bank. This underwater hump is located between Point Wilson and Marrowstone point when headed toward Port Townsend. Just look for the steam coming from the Port Townsend Paper Company’s stack and the other fishing boats and your there. The bank runs slightly west to east so, like most other fishing trips, fish with the tide, or in this case fish the west end on the flood (incoming) tide and fish the east end on the ebb (outgoing) tide. The shape and couture of this bank is what keeps the baitfish swarming and feeding, and where there’s bait there’s salmon.

The east side has the steep drop-off and this will be the most productive side. Fish between 70 and 120 feet, fish may be as deep as 300 feet but the current will make the deeper depths hard to fish effectively.

I normally troll when fishing Mid Channel Bank but you will find fishermen drifting with the current. They may be mooching with cut plug Herring or using a white and green Point Wilson dart, no matter which technique you choose stay near the bottom here, the fish are foraging near the bottom searching for and eating candlefish and attacking the occasional herring ball.

There is a rainbow of color options for spoons, needlefish hoochies and flashers on the market. I like greens and whites here with a 40 inch leader. I also keep some herring “Smelly Jelly” handy to dab onto the lure. Keep your jelly cool, it will maintain the fresh scent longer, if left in the sun this stuff seems to breakdown and almost becomes rancid smelling. I watched a video made by Canadian biolo-

gist Charlie White in which he conducted an experiment using two identical spoons.

He pulled back the doghouse of his engine compartment and dipped one of the spoons into the greasy, oily bilge water and then clipped them both straight onto his downrigger, which was rigged with an underwater camera. The oily spoon took every strike and hooked every fish!

A salmon would swim up to and look at both spoons but the oily one always won out. This goes against everything we learned about keeping the terminal tackle fresh so you never know what will trigger these fish to bite.

If the winds get bad on Mid Channel there is the option to motor across to Admiralty Bay and fish along the old Bombing Range or along the north beach area. The coho and pinks should be starting to show now so over in this section of water there is a good chance of hooking into one of these guys in addition to a Chinook.

I want to reiterate the importance of checking the regulations and the WDFW web site before setting out. The State expects a weak return of fish almost across the board and have the season and species retention chopped up pretty bad. However, if fish numbers increase beyond this expectation they may open a previously closed area. One other note, I’ve been getting reports that a black with silver flasher has been out fishing the other colors this year, so if you’ve got this color combo give it a try if all the normal green or red colors are leaving you scratching your head.

Don’t troll more than 15 minutes without checking your leaders for nicks, along with eel grass and other debris interfering with the natural flasher and lure movements.

You will learn that if the rod tip movement does not look right to you then 9 out of 10 times there is some kind of fouling effecting you gear. Replace your hooks often, take notes, and talk with fellow fishermen at the docks to help stay on top of what’s working in that area. Take family and friends fishing when you can and GOOD LUCK out there!

This morning, after being challenged as to the origin of the exclamation “son of a gun,” I was encouraged to find out I was not incorrect, but that I had not provided the best answer.

If there is more than one answer to a question, why ask it? In fact, why am I asking that question since it has too many answers anyway?

You may be asking why I am talking to myself again. Did you leave the room?

Son of a gun According to Wikipedia, which is much easier to access than my shed-stored 1958 World Book Encyclopedia, the term “son of a gun” is defined by the "Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary as a euphemism for S.O.B, (which does not mean son of a banker). The Encarta Dictionary defines the term in a different way as someone 'affectionately or kindly regarded.' The term can also be used as an interjection expressing surprise, mild annoyance or disappointment."

According to Trivial Pursuit, the source for most all of our collective wisdom in the 80s, the term “son of a gun” originated when and if a baby was born at sea between the cannons of a naval vessel. Apparently, women were allowed to be aboard ships with their husbands. As a result, the Royal Navy permitted pregnant women to give birth aboard ship in the space between the broadside guns. Such a location would keep the gangways and crew decks cleared during any birth.

In his 1867 book, The Sailor's Word-Book, Admiral William Henry Smyth wrote: "Son of a gun, an epithet conveying contempt in a slight degree, and originally applied to boys born afloat, when women were permitted to accompany their husbands to sea; one admiral declared he literally was thus cradled, under the breast of a gun-carriage."

So, you and your jury are still out as to which origin you prefer, but whatever you decide, remember to watch your P's and Q's, another expression to keep you in the etymology zone.

The Bad Tempered Wife A very ill-tempered woman "in her senior years" was arrested for shoplifting at a grocery store.

She gave everyone a hard time, from the store manager to the security guard to the arresting officer who took her away. She complained and criticized everything and everyone throughout the process.

When she appeared before the judge, the judge asked her what she had stolen from the store.

The lady defiantly replied, "Just a stupid can of peaches."

The judge then asked why she had done it. She replied, "I was hungry and forgot to bring any cash to the store."

The judge asked how many peaches were in the can. She replied in a nasty tone, "Nine! But why do you care about that?"

The judge answered patiently, "Well, ma'am, because I'm going to give you nine days in jail, one day for each peach."

As the judge was about to drop his gavel, the lady's long-suffering husband raised his hand slowly and asked if he might speak.

The judge said, "Yes sir, what do you have to add?"

The husband said meekly, "Your Honor, she also stole two cans of peas."

The title is reinforced in the denouement of the novel in which Wolfe's protagonist George Webber realizes: 'You can't go back home to your family, back home to your childhood...back home to a young man's dreams of glory and of fame...back home to places in the country, back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time – back home to the escapes of Time and Memory.'"

Well, last weekend, I proved Mr. Wolfe and Mr. Webber and Ms. Winter were incorrect in their assumptions. You can go back, particularly if you have not recycled in almost a decade.

Yes, you read that correctly. It was some decade or so ago that the wonderful folks at Hearts and Hammers helped me get rid of twenty years of stuff stored in my caboose shed. That twenty years of stuff was the partial accumulation of my life possessions, gathered from collections in boxes and luggage transported from Ohio to Pennsylvania to California to Oregon, back to California, and finally, thirty-five years ago, to Whidbey Island.

I know “you can go back” because I have spent the last week of sunshine outside sorting memories long forgotten.

There were all the smashed cans of Vernor's Ginger Ale which were inside a cracked plastic tub, the several years of Whidbey Island telephone books, and a moldy copy of the New York City Cab Driver's Joke Book.

There was the chainsaw I last used in the 80s to cut down a Doug fir the wrong way so I could take the power out all over the neighborhood for a day.

There was the never used grass catching device for my Honda mower, filled with nests for the local mice and other mysterious varmints. Hopefully, the forty sheets of Western Family summer breeze fabric softener I distributed throughout the shed will balance out some of the other olfactory delights.

There were the two truck tires I used in lieu of a car seat for our elementary aged girls to sit in the back of the Chevy Nova, way back when car insurance was not required in Washington.

Yes, you can go back, way back. Nostalgia returns. Memories await. The barnacles of your brain can get dislodged into a remembrance.

Who needs short term memories when we have so much long term stuff we can bring up? The moral of this story – Some memories smell worse than others, but recycle anyway. It's therapeutic!

Bits & Pieces Fire at Senior Thrift Thrift store in Freeland will be closed for at least 2 weeks Fire crews responded to a fire at Senior Thrift (5518 Woodard Ave., Freeland) early Sunday morning around 2:00am. The apparent origin of the fire was a furnace located on the second floor of the thrift store. Crews were able to get it under control before it spread throughout the building. The fire has caused extensive smoke damage in the store and the offices that house six employees from Island Senior Resources’ administrative and finance department. Two trusses were also badly damaged in the fire Preliminary assessments have the thrift store being closed for at least two weeks. A more precise timeline will be known once forensics specialists and structural engineers can assess the damage. Administrative and finance department employees will be temporarily relocated to Island Senior Resources’ resource center in Bayview.

Executive Director, Cheryn Weiser stated that she was “told by the Incident Commander that if the response had been 30 minutes later, the store would have been totaled.” She also said, “We are very grateful that no one was hurt in the process. Senior Thrift staff and volunteers are in shock and rallying around the current crisis.”

Senior Thrift is one of the main sources of funding for Island Senior Resources (the trade name of Senior Services of Island County).

Profits from Senior Thrift help support Meals on Wheels, Time Together Adult Day Program, Volunteer Medical Transportation, and Aging & Disability Resources, among other programs, throughout Island County. Now, more than ever, Island Senior Resources needs financial support from the community.

Senior Thrift currently employs 6 full-time and 5 part-time employees and is supported with the help of 50 volunteers.

Island Transit Seeking Input on 2017-2022 Draft Transit Development Plan (TDP) Island Transit will hold a series of public meetings to solicit feedback on the draft 20172022 Six-Year Transit Development Plan (TDP).

The Transit Development Plan (TDP) serves as a guide for Island Transit. It helps identify transit service needs, prioritize improvements and determine the resources required for implementing modified or new service. The plan also provides a foundation for requests for State funding and grants, which are an important addition to the local sales tax collected that enables Island Transit to provide bus and vanpool services. Road Restrictions for Whidbey Island Triathlon The following road restrictions will be in effect to facilitate the safety of runners and bicyclists during South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District’s 21st annual Whidbey Island Triathlon on Saturday, July 29: 7:30am-9:15am: Lakeside Dr. one way only (northwest-bound) between Traverse Rd. & Pintail Rd. (no street parking except select volunteers).

NWIRC to Hold Build It NOW Lecture on Whidbey Island NWIRC will partner with Whidbey Telecom for a free presentation in Freeland, Wash Northwest Innovation Resource Center (NWIRC) will partner with Whidbey Telecom to host a free lunch and presentation at noon on Thursday, Aug. 3 in Freeland, Washington.

NWIRC Program Manager Lara MerriamSmith will share her entrepreneurial journey in taking a product to market and how that inspired NWIRC’s new Build It NOW Program - designed to jump-start innovation by going from an idea to a prototype quickly. “Too often inventors and innovators regret when they see their idea out there made by someone else,”

Chris McKnight, CMO at Whidbey Telecom, will discuss the company’s vision for developing the information technology economy on Whidbey Island. He will also speak about the role of high speed internet as a critical resource for innovators to build long term successful businesses. Whidbey Telecom is extensively engaged in activities which will enrich life in the community. “We’re honored that our BigGig fiber Internet service has become part of the business formation and growth story here on Whidbey Island” McKnight said. “We look forward to hearing more from entrepreneurs and business owners about how we can help them succeed.”

The presentation is part of a series of community talks that will occur throughout August and includes stops at Edmonds Community College, Darrington Library and Skagit Valley College. Penn Cove Orca Capture Anniversary Commemoration Forty-seven years ago over 100 Southern Resident orcas were herded into Penn Cove off Whidbey Island, WA. Seven of the young whales were netted and delivered to marine parks around the world. All but one had died by 1987. Originally named Tokitae, they now call her Lolita. In memory of the nearly 40 Southern Resident orcas captured in Washington State, and in honor of Tokitae (Lolita), the sole survivor, the public is invited to join Orca Network for their annual Penn Cove Capture Commemoration. On Tuesday, August 8, Orca Network will sponsor a series of events in Coupeville to commemorate the 47th anniversary of the 1970 Penn Cove Orca Capture.

From 1:00pm to 5:00pm join Orca Network at the Coupeville Wharf for educational displays and information about Tokitae and the orca captures. From 3:00pm to 5:00pm the Cutty Sark and the SUVA will provide ceremonial boat trips into Penn Cove to the capture site. Special speakers for the boat trip include Howard Garrett of Orca Network and Dr. Kriss Kevorkian, who will speak of ‘Environmental Grief’. Tickets for the boat trip are $50.

If you have your own boat or kayak you are invited to join Orca Network in Penn Cove for a procession to the capture site as they honor Tokitae and her family members who were captured in 1970. Kayaks and small boats can be launched from Capt. Coupe Park in Coupeville, Monroe’s Landing, or the DNR access on Madrona Way (note: parking permits are required for the use of DNR parking/beach access areas). The procession willl travel to the capture site in Penn Cove for a wreath ceremony to remember the orcas killed in the capture, and those who have died in captivity.

After the on-the-water events, beginning at 5:00pm, there will be a waterside ceremony and special blessing on the dock by Rosie Cayou and Bill Bailey of the Samish Nation, followed by a program including Howard Garrett of Orca Network and Nickolaus Dee Lewis of the Lummi Tribal Council. The events on the Wharf are free to the public, though contributions to support Orca Network’s educational programs and work on orca captivity issues are appreciated. Queer Pride on Whidbey (QPOW) hosts the 4th Annual Queer Pride Parade on Whidbey, Sunday, August 13, at 2:00pm in downtown Langley, WA. Celebrating the LGBTQ+ community of Whidbey Island, the group and parade continue to identify as a “Queer” Pride event to be inclusive to community members who live outside binary gender (trans, non-conforming, genderfluid, agender) and sexual (pansexual, asexual, etc.) identities.

Queer is a common umbrella term encompassing the many gender identities and sexual orientations that exist beyond cis-gender and heterosexuality. (Cis-gender is defined as an individual who identifies with the sex they were assigned at birth).

LGBTQ+ community members and allies, as well as local businesses and organizations supporting the LGBTQ+ community, are encouraged to participate by registering to walk or ride in the parade.

Pre-registration for this year’s Queer Pride Parade on Whidbey is available online at www. qpowhidbey.com/register. Day-of registration is also available at the former LMS Bus Parking Lot at 565 Camano Avenue, Langley WA. Day-of registration and parade assembly begin at 12-noon on Sunday, August 13. Registration and participation in the parade are always free.

The parade route travels up Sixth Street, right on Anthes Avenue, right on First Street and forward onto Cascade, ending back at the start.

Nominations are being accepted for Royal Family Members to ride in the honorary QPOW Royal Family float. Deadline for nominations is August 1. Local Business News Traveling with Whidbey SeaTac Shuttle is Getting Greener Whidbey SeaTac Shuttle has been operating Green since their inception in 2003; their goal has always been to step up efforts and become the island leader in sustainable travel.

To this effort Whidbey SeaTac Shuttle has begun to convert their fleet over to propane, with three buses going into service last week and plans to have half the fleet converted by this fall.

Diversify Your Investments But Consolidate Your Providers

You have probably heard that diversification is a key to investment success. So, you might think that if diversifying your investments is a good idea, it might also be wise to diversify your investment providers – after all, aren’t two (or more) heads better than one?

Before we look at that issue, let’s consider the first half of the “diversification” question – namely, how does diversifying your investment portfolio help you?

Consider the two broadest categories of investments: stocks and bonds. Stock prices will move up and down in response to many different factors, including good or bad corporate earnings, corporate management issues, political developments and even natural disasters. Bond prices are not immune to these dynamics, but they are usually more strongly driven by changes in interest rates. To illustrate: If your existing bond pays 2 percent interest, and new bonds are being issued at 3 percent, the value of your bond will fall, because no one will pay you full price for it. (Of course, it may not matter to you anyway, especially if you planned to hold your bond until maturity, at which point you can expect to get your full investment back, providing the bond issuer doesn’t default.)

Here’s the key point: Stocks and bonds often move in different directions. If you only own U.S. stocks, you could take a big hit during a market downturn, but if you own domestic and international stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit and other types of investments, your portfolio may be better protected against market volatility, and you’ll have more opportunities for positive results.

(Keep in mind, though, that even a diversified portfolio can’t prevent all losses or guarantee profits.)

So, it clearly is a good idea to diversify your investment portfolio. Now, let’s move on to diversifying financial service providers. Why shouldn’t you have one IRA here and another one there, or enlist one advisor to help you with some types of investments and a different advisor assisting you with others?

Actually, some good reasons exist to consider consolidating all your investment accounts with one provider. For one thing, you’ll keep better track of your assets. Many people do misplace or forget about some of their savings and investments, but this will be far less likely to happen to you if you hold all your accounts in one place.

Also, if you have accounts with several different financial service providers, you might be incurring a lot of paperwork – and many fees. You can cut down on clutter and expense by consolidating your accounts.

But most important, by placing all your accounts with a single provider, possibly under the supervision of a single financial advisor, you will find it much easier to follow a single, unified investment strategy, based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. You won’t get conflicting advice and you’ll receive clear guidance on important issues, such as the amounts you can afford to withdraw each year from your retirement accounts once you do retire.

Diversification and consolidation – one is good for building an investment portfolio, while the other can help you invest more efficiently and effectively. Put the two concepts together, and make them work for you.

National Night Out fosters community relationships Coast to coast, north to south, millions of people across the United States, in Canada and on U.S. military bases around the world will take time out Tuesday to celebrate National Night Out.

“As Lions, we enjoy meeting people and helping out wherever we can,” said Christy Green, National Night Out chairperson for the Lions. “It’s all about getting people out and about, getting to meet everybody.”

The overall purpose of National Night Out is to help foster positive communication and relationships between local law enforcement and the community. Green said she feels it is important to take advantage of the opportunity to nurture that relationship, especially in light of events across the country the past couple of years.

“The way I see it, the community gets to see officers away from the police station and see that they’re human beings too,” she said.

“They might have a uniform on, but they’re people. It’s wonderful to see the community come out in support of our law enforcement nowadays because of what’s happened.

People do care.”

And people attend. Green said they had about 5,000 people come out for NNO last year and expect to have at least that many again this year.

“Attendance has more than doubled through the years,” she said. “It says to us we’re doing the right thing.

“We just can’t put it into words how that makes us feel,” she continued. “It’s wonder-

Oak Harbor is no exception, holding its NNO celebration Tuesday from 3:30 to 7 p.m. at Fort Nugent Park. The annual event is sponsored by the Oak Harbor Lions Club and will feature food and fun from local businesses and organizations.

“This is all classical, baroque style chamber music that has stood the test of time,” Cunningham said. “Some of it may be very familiar, like Mozart, but some you might never have heard of at all.”

That, too, is part of the beauty of this particular festival, said Cunningham. It offers audiences a chance to explore not only different music, but the world.

“The second week we explore the new world – music composed in missions all over the world,” she said. “A lot of these composers were Spanish priests who came to the new world, and they incorporated a lot of the native sounds into their compositions. It’s really interesting, melting pot music.”

That is the heart of the Whidbey Island Music Festival, which kicks off its 12th season Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. at St. Augustine’s in the Woods Episcopal Church in Freeland.

Not only does the WIMF feature classical music played on period instruments, it features incredibly talented, world-renowned instrumentalists and vocalists. For instance, Seattle native Stephen Stubbs is a Grammy Award-winning artist who had a successful 30-year career in Europe. Countertenor Reginald Mobley, for example, will head straight to London after his Whidbey Island appearance. In short, everyone scheduled to appear is a heavy-hitter in the chamber music scene.

“Everything is performed on instruments from the period which the music was written,” said Festival Director Tekla Cunningham, a violinist who will also be performing during the festival. “It brings a special flavor to the music that people really enjoy and it’s a unique spin for Whidbey Island.”

This year the Whidbey Island Music Festival will present six performances of four different programs, spread out over the next two weekends. The first program, being performed Friday evening and again at 3 p.m. Sunday, features a string quintet playing classics by Mozart and Medelssohn.

As Cunningham puts it, you can never go wrong with the classics, part of the reason the Whidbey Island Music Festival has been so successful.

“It’s an enduring form of music that speaks directly to people’s emotions,” she said. “Once you’ve experienced that, it’s hard to go back. There’s something deeply moving about a lot of classical music that speaks to people. It explores the human experience in a way popular music might not do.”

By Kathy Reed Whidbey Weekly If it floats and you can sit in it, feel free to join in the fourth annual “Sail-What-You-Gotta” Regatta, to be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Lone Lake near Langley.

The annual event is put on by the South Whidbey Yacht Club and South Whidbey Parks and Recreation.

“This is one of many events we do throughout the year, but this one is focused more on the community,” said Bob Rodgers, commodore of the South Whidbey Yacht Club. “It’s designed so that if you have boat on the side of the house collecting moss, you can bring it out, put it in the water and see if it floats.”

This family friendly event is free and features games, sailboat rides, free hot dogs, a boat parade, a youth build-a-boat contest, racing demonstrations and awards for the best dressed and funniest boats.

The only thing that might rain on the regatta’s parade might be an algae bloom. The lake has been closed for swimming and results of a test on July 20 still showed levels above state safety guidelines. In the event the bloom has not cleared before the Regatta, water activities will be cancelled, but there will still be fun activities, games and food on shore in which the community can participate.

“We offer shore side activities, such as picnic-type games and free hot dogs,” said Rodgers. “But even on shore we are able to market our yacht club and see what we do with our youth sailing programs and other things like that.”

And therein lies one of the main reasons for the “Sail-What-YouGotta” Regatta. It’s all about piquing interest in the sport of sailing.

Organizers aren’t kidding when they say pretty much anything that floats can take part. All small, non-motorized vessels such as sailboats, row boats, paddle boats, canoes and kayaks are welcome to join in the fun.

The South Whidbey Yacht Club was formed in 2003, and while it is technically a club without a permanent home, it still boasts more than 100 members. Most meetings are held at the Deer Lagoon Grange overlooking Lone Lake.

“Offering rides in our Pelican sailboats has been very popular,” Rodgers said. “You get Mom, Dad and a couple of kids out on the water and they come back all smiles. We enjoy sharing this great sport of sailing.”

Children are free of charge and encouraged to attend, particularly the afternoon performances where bedtime is not a factor, said Cunningham.

“We love to see kids at our concerts and would love to see more kids come to see us play and hear something new,” she said.

“It’s just a great way of learning about the world, about all kinds of people and their music. It’s a rich and full experience.”

As Green said, there will be plenty of food vendors on hand and lots of community organizations and businesses that will participate in the fun by providing family-friendly activities and games for those attending.

“People can come out and get to know the local pastors for churches, or bank representatives or people from other organizations in the area. We even have some vendors come from out of the area,” said Green.

Because of the success of the Oak Harbor event, other communities have reached out to the Oak Harbor Lions Club for advice about starting their own National Night Out events.

“We’ve been approached by people from Anacortes because they’re in the process of building their own National Night Out event and they want advice from us on what they can do to grow that,” said Green. “That’s a good feeling.”

Green said they will be accepting applications for vendors up until the day of the event.

Pitch Perfect Pairings – Food and Music I was out to eat the other day with my family and as we were waiting for our food to come out, I took note of something. The music. I have noted the music in restaurants before but on this particular occasion it sparked a curiosity. Why do eating establishments play music while we dine and is the play list carefully selected?

It is safe to say different types of restaurants are likely to play different kinds of music. A barbeque or roadhouse tends to play more country music in keeping with the entire theme of the venue. Perhaps finer, ritzier restaurants will turn up the volume on something smoother and wonderfully melodic, something classical even. So the idea behind the choice of music played at any given eatery is to enhance a diner’s experience, to create a certain ambiance, and most likely to influence the patron’s meal choices.

Some research exists which suggests music has an incredibly strong impact on the way we perceive food. The University of Oxford’s Crossmodal Research Laboratory conducted research on this notion and found that listeners of music comprised of higher notes seemed to associate the sound with sweet flavors, and likewise the sound of flutes and

the soft tinkling of a piano elicited the same perception of taste. The deeper, more booming sounds brought about a connection with bitter flavors, suggesting music truly does tickle our taste buds. There are also, however, some restaurants which play no music at all, and the reason for this is because of the belief that the food at the venue is so fine, it speaks for itself and any outside attempts at creating ambiance or mood, does little more than detract from the delectability of the food.

While I totally see the reasoning behind this, on a personal level, I think I have become so used to hearing background melodies, I would probably feel a little uncomfortable and out of place not hearing any kind of music. But that’s a whole new story in and of itself! And while some eateries refuse to allow anything to distract their patrons from the deliciousness of the food, others use it as a psychological tool to create a larger profit for their business.

Music with a fast tempo is likely to be played at a louder volume and this is thought to make diners feel under pressure to eat faster, pay and leave - higher customer turnover. I can’t attest to the accuracy of this train of thought personally, but if there is, in fact, some truth to it, it may not be the best idea to blast loud music into the ear canals of the customers.

part of the parasympathetic nervous system.

This means music with a fast tempo, played really loudly brings about the fight or flight response, thus suppressing appetite, rendering the sensation secondary to ‘perceived’ survival needs. You’re not likely to feel hunger pangs if you’re being chased by a bear – the concept is the same, as loud music can evoke a similar response, or so it’s said.In all of this, and reading about why music is played during a meal regardless of where the meal is being eaten, I’ve come to realize just how involved the act of making food and eating it actually is. In my house, when we are preparing for a large get-together, the music gets turned on, the most up-beat tunes are found and the volume is turned up. I find it gives us all some pep in our step, and we all dance and sing while we chop onions, stir gravy, or peel fruit. My family and I sing along to our favorite songs and just enjoy the activity we are partaking in together. And you know, even the theme of a get-together influences our choices in the music we put on to prep our food to. Summer time means we indulge in some reggae vibes because we’re either heading to some body of water or going to have a backyard ‘beach party.’ In winter, Christmas tunes hitch a ride on the crisp cinnamon apple scents that float through our house and tickles every sense of each and every person in the home. It enhances the entire experience and creates a sense of anticipation – ‘I can’t wait to try those Christmas cookies!’- that sort of thing.

As I’m sitting here, I’m thinking about just how central food is to life. Not only do we have to eat to live, but we celebrate just about everything with food. Weddings, birthdays, graduations, anniversaries – all of these we celebrate with food, and with different kinds of food. The music typically associated with the aforementioned celebrations also differs from each other quite drastically, and the feeling that goes hand in hand with each respective event is again, so very different from one another. Anniversary meals might see something soft and romantic come oozing out of sound system speakers, birthdays use the loud and raucous voices of all who are celebrating another year of the birthday person

to show them how happy they are for another year of their life, and graduations often play deeply inspiring music, something resonant to settle into the soul of the achiever and their loved ones. The foods will link the sound of the music we hear at each event with the food served to the overall feelings we end up experiencing. It’s so, so intricate and wonderful and begs a lot more space than what I have here to talk about it! So dear readers, I encourage you to make your next meal with some music playing in the background and really enhance your cooking experience. Caprese Salad on Avocado Toast 4 Slices of your favorite bread, toasted 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved Balsamic vinaigrette/dressing ¼ cup chopped fresh basil 2 ripe avocados Salt and pepper to taste 2 teaspoons lemon juice 4 oz mozzarella cheese, cut to fit the toast Cut the avocados in half, remove the pit and scoop the flesh out of the peel into a bowl.

Mash roughly with the lemon juice, salt and pepper, with a fork to keep the mixture slightly chunky. Spread this mixture onto the toast, top with avocado slices, cherry tomato halves, chopped basil and then drizzle with balsamic vinaigrette/dressing. Life Tributes Janice Audrey Aasland (Poehler) Janice Audrey Aasland (Poehler), 79, resident of Oak Harbor, passed away July 18, 2017 at Fidalgo Skilled Nursing Facility in Anacortes with family by her side.

Janice was born December 6, 1937 in Warwick, NJ to the late Arthur and Harriet Poehler. She was raised in Maywood, NJ with her brother Artie and sister Shirley. She attended school in Maywood and later graduated from Paterson General Hospital School of Nursing in 1958.

Janice was united in marriage to Maurice A. Aasland May 29, 1960 in her hometown of Maywood, NJ after which they moved several times with the US Navy finally settling in Oak Harbor in 1968 to raise their family. Janice worked as an RN for Whidbey General Hospital then for Whidbey Island Manor before retiring.

She enjoyed knitting, especially for her family, and working on the family's genealogy. She was part of the Whidbey Genealogical Searchers, member of the Sons of Norway - Whidbey Island Chapter and the Paterson General Hospital Nurses Alumni group.

Janice was proceeded in death by her parents Arthur and Harriet, sister Shirley and granddaughter Megan.

She is survived by her husband Maurice of 57 years, daughter Joyce Aasland of Seattle, son Mark Aasland and wife Judy of Happy Valley, OR, son Arthur Aasland and wife Sharon of Lakeville, MN and daughter Karen Passmore (Aasland) of Mount Vernon, WA, as well as 3 grandsons – Brandon, Daniel, and Zachary and 3 granddaughters – Sarah, Breanna, and Carolyn.

Isaac Daniel Johnson Sr. USN Retired Senior Chief Petty Officer Isaac Daniel Johnson Sr. passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family Saturday, July 15, 2017 following an ongoing battle with cancer in Oak Harbor, WA, where he has resided since 1974.

Isaac was born August 11, 1938 in Stuttgart, AR, to Margie Lee Harris Johnson Nobles. He had many nicknames from “Sonny” and “Sonny boy” to his family, “Ike” and “I.D.” to friends and colleagues, and “Papa” for his grandchildren.

Isaac grew up in St. Louis, MO, where he graduated from Vashon High School in 1956. After graduation from high school, Isaac moved to Louisville, KY where he enlisted in the United States Navy and served for 24 years.

Isaac met his wife Ira “Faye” Johnson in Memphis, TN in 1958. They were married April 29, 1960.

Isaac received an Associate Degree in Engineering Technology and Associate of Science Degree from

Olympic College in Bremerton.

During his time in the Navy, Senior Chief Petty Officer Isaac Johnson served during the Vietnam War. He earned and received the rank of E8 and received many honors and awards such as National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Service, Vietnam Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Commendation Gallantry Cross, Navy Achievement Medal, and multiple good conduct awards. Isaac was on a few aircraft carriers namely the USS Saratoga – Bicentennial Cruise 1976, USS Coral Sea 196869, and USS Constellation 1974. He was also on a few smaller ships during his tour in the Navy.

He was stationed in Guam; Corpus Christi, TX; twice in Oak Harbor, WA; and Bremerton, WA. Isaac became a mechanic and an excellent instructor for the A6/EA-6 aircraft communities.

He instructed basic hydraulics fundamentals on the EA-6B/A-6E airframes, hydraulics and flight controls systems, and aircrew familiarization and corrosion control. His primary duty was supervising instructors for the aircraft division, maintaining equipment and materials. Enjoyable goals in the Navy were fixing airplanes and teaching young mechanics. He served with VP-17, HatRon 123, VA-128, VA-52, VAQ-131, and two tours with NAMTRAGRUDET Whidbey Island. After his retirement, he was a contract worker for Boeing, instructing work on the hydraulics and wings on their planes. This led him to work in Greenville, MS; Everett, WA; and Ewa Beach, HI. Isaac was known for his love of God, wife, family & country, especially the Navy. He had a passion for singing, woodworking, photography, fishing, traveling, gardening and sports. His love for sports came from his childhood days of playing football, basketball and running track. He contributed this sports passion to the Oak Harbor community by refereeing many youth league softball, baseball, junior high football and basketball, and high school football and basketball games. Isaac also encouraged his children to participate in athletics and entered them in various road races in the area as he enjoyed planning family events and activities. He would travel to many games and activities to see his children compete and take the family on many road trips to Seattle to support the local professional teams.

He loved the Seattle Supersonics and passed this love on to his children. His love for gardening led to him owning his own landscaping business: Isaac Johnson Lawncare, which he did mostly for enjoyment. Isaac also enjoyed performing in various plays at the Whidbey playhouse. For a time, Isaac coordinated the Foreign Student Exchange Program in Oak Harbor. For his involvement in community affairs, Isaac received the Martin Luther King Jr. Citizen Award in 1980 by Skagit Valley Community College.

Isaac loved God and this country and shared this love through song. He sang worship songs in many churches, hospitals, and nursing homes, and sang the national anthem at many sporting events. Isaac loved his family and church and was generous and supportive of them in all different ways. His dedication to God was instilled in his children.

Isaac is survived by his wife of 57 years Ira “Faye” Johnson, eight children and several (grandchildren). Pamela (Chauntelle), Gina and her husband Robert Faison (Arik, Aaron and Abraham), Isaac Jr. and his wife Kim (Shane and Riley), Deborah and her husband Kenneth Owen (Joshua, Andrew, Rachel and Jarron), Linda and her husband Keith (Keith Jr), Ivan (Sophia), Sarah (Shaun and Shemar), and Isaiah and his wife Leta

(Elijah, Azaria and Neviah), & 2 great grandchildren (Savannah and Carly), lots of nieces, nephews & cousins.

His brother Joe Frank and his wife Jerlean from Louisville, KY; his sister Gloria and her husband Reverend Samuel Hale from Springfield, IL; his Aunt Mary Harris Knox of Louisville, KY; Aunt Maddie B Pace of Terry, AR; also survive Isaac. His brother Nathaniel, daughter Della Denise, and his mother Margie Lee Harris Johnson Nobles precede him in death.

A Celebration of Life for Isaac was held Monday, July 24 at Life Church in Oak Harbor, WA. Isaac's burial with military honors will be held Friday, July 28 promptly at 12:30pm at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, WA in the presence of his family and close friends.
