Welcome to the Fourth Newsletter of 2010. Well winter has arrived early this year and I am sure many of you like me are wondering when this ‘global warming’ will arrive!!! I have to start by telling you we have a new Chairman. Sarah has stood down and Alex Bishop has been elected in her place. Alex plays one of the big basses (tuba) at the back of the band and is a Major in the Salvation Army. Saturday 4th September saw the band back at St Mary’s church, Stalham for another ‘Last Night of the Proms’ style concert. Dave and Rita helped Pam and myself to transform the church during the afternoon with bunting and flags so that by the time the audience arrived the atmosphere was ready for a patriotic evening as can be seen below.

I know many of you joined us for a wonderful evening’s entertainment. At the end of the Secretary – Yvonne Owers 20 Post Office Road, Lingwood, Norwich. NR13 4AD Tel 01603 712930

performance the band left the stage to a standing ovation The Eastern Daily press sent a reviewer to this event and his review was pretty positive towards our performance. Friday 15th October saw the band playing at a fund raising event at Acle High School organised by Alex, our new chairman, for the Broadland Rotary Club. The evening raised over £300.00 which Barclays Bank has promised to match. Alex was pleased with the result and hopes we can do it again next year. At the end of October we played at the annual CAMRA Beer Festival at St Andrews Hall, Norwich. This was our fourth visit to the beer festival, slowly working our way to the most popular nights toward the end of the week – Friday this year. Kevin was really pleased with both the performance of the band and the appreciation of the audience. One person was heard to say they never thought they would ever be dancing to a brass band – perhaps the ale was in control!!! Thursday 11th November saw Dave and Alan play the Last Post at the short Armistice Day service at St Mary’s church, Stalham. Sixteen members of the band were at the same venue for the annual Royal British Legion Remembrance Sunday Service, where Ashley played the ‘Last Post’. The church was again full for this very popular event with ExChairman – Alex Bishop 19 Honeysuckle Close, North Walsham, Norwich. NR28 9XN Tel 01692 407079

service groups and Youth groups all taking an active part. December is always a busy month for the band with carol playing at Roys of Wroxham most weekends and this year is no exception. Today Pam and I have decorated a Christmas tree, on behalf of the band, in Stalham church again this year, as part of their Christmas Tree Festival. This will last from 4th to 12th December. Entry to the festival is free. Fifty local organisations are anticipated to take part again this year creating a spectacular sight in the church. If you are in Stalham during this period why not pop in, the church will be open daily between 10am and 4pm, refreshments will be available. The tree decorated in the band’s colours of black and gold is shown below.

The seventh R.A.F.A. Christmas Concert will take place on Wednesday 15th at 7.30pm and you will be able to use your membership card for a reduction of £1.00. This year the band will be joined by the Martham Junior School Choral Society. Those of you who were at our Martham concert in July will appreciate the high standard that their teacher Sarah, our former chairman, has achieved with these youngsters. Please come and join us for what promises to be a great evening of Christmas music. The previous six R.A.F.A. Christmas Concerts have raised a total of over £4,700 and with your help we can add significantly to this. Our last official event of the year will be playing carols for charity at the Kings Arms in Ludham on Thursday 23rd from 7.30pm. We have raised over £100.00 at each of our previous events there and this year the proceeds will go to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Hot mince pies and mulled wine will be provided. It is too early to inform you of our programme for next year however several of our hosts this year have indicated a wish to engage us again next year. I expect us to finish up with a full and rewarding series of concerts – several of which will come with a £1.00 deduction for Friend members. It just remains for me to remind you that your subscription (£2.00) will become due on the 1st January. Your expiry date is shown on your membership card. Subs can be paid to any band member or to me at:9 Rivermead, Stalham, Norwich. NR12 9PH. Please make cheques payable to NORFOLK WHERRY BRASS. Our website is currently being revamped, to bring you the latest information and photos of the band. Finally the committee and members of Norfolk Wherry Brass wish our readers (that’s
