FIRST LOOK

This scenic, Old West town played a pivotal role in 19thcentury history as the site of America’s largest silver mining strike—wealth that helped the nation recover from the Civil War and become a world power. While silver and other minerals are still mined locally, Virginia City now strikes gold with thousands of visitors annually, who enjoy strolling its wooden sidewalks, shopping for vintage and modern wares and whetting their whistles at historic saloons.

Carson Valley

Carson Valley is a wide-open, scenic valley bordered by towering Sierra peaks and the Pine Nut Mountains, dotted with the twin towns of Minden and Gardnerville and Nevada’s first settlement, Genoa (where you can still enjoy a cocktail at the state’s oldest bar). To the south is Topaz Lake and the gateway to the Eastern Sierra, while at the valley’s other end sits Nevada’s state capital, Carson City, with attractions including the Nevada State Museum and U.S. Mint. 16
