Athletic Development

Each Spring we develop our bulls to be at their peak athletic condition. Athletically built bulls are proven to be more efficient breeders, have higher fertility, and be less likely to become fatigued. We are not in the feeder business. There is no reason to over feed and fatten bulls. Our bulls are fed a grain ration and free choice brome hay to produce an average daily gain of 3.4lbs. Free choice mineral and salt are provided to maintain fertility and help development. Two gain tests are perfromed during development in the winter months, and scrotal measurements are taken at one year of age. All bulls are current on their vaccinations before they are sent out to pasture.

Keeping Performance First

Make no doubt about it, the single most profit driving factor in the cattle industry is pounds. A lot of genetic factors go into pounds though. It starts with a live calf (calving ease), continues into growth (performance), maternal traits (milk), amd feed efficiency (the ability to turn feed into lbs). While the industry was busy successfully downsizing cattle and decreasing frame to reduce feed costs, we continued to breed for PERFORMANCE. A very wise and close friend of ours once said, “It’s easy to bring a large framed cow down, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to bring a small cow up”. Although IMPOSSIBLE might be a bit of an exageration, you can still count on it taking years to breed the performance back into your herd once you take it out.

At Wheeler & Son we believe you can have the STRONG, EASY CALVING, FEED EFFICIENT, females without jepardizing your frame. Don’t be fooled, a large framed animal has much more capacity to produce higher weights than a small framed cow. We believe that you can maintain high performance cattle without a ton of feed. By running DNA tests and gain tests for feed efficient herd sires, we focusing our breeding so that our customers can have the cake and the ice cream. It’s our job to produce you cattle that will turn heads and keep your input costs down, and we take pride in doing so.

Heifer Giveaway Program

To show our appreciate to all of our customers we are initiating a heifer giveaway for the year 2014. It’s simple, if you buy a bull from us or if you refer a new customer that buys a bull from us, your name will go in a hat. For example, if you refer five new customers to us and they all purchase bulls, your name will go in the hat five times. On November 31st, 2014 we will be drawing a name out of the hat. If your name is drawn you will recieve one free open replacement heifer from our fall weaning calves.

The heifer will be chosen by Wheeler & Son and put on our website for display starting November 1st. The winner will have 3 weeks to pick up the heifer or the heifer can be shipped to the winner at the winner’s expense. If the winner lives to far away to justify the cost of picking up a heifer, they can choose to recieve credit (in the amount of the heifer value) for their next purchase at Wheeler & Son. Ways to Get Your Name in the Hat

1.) Purchase a bull or female in the year 2014. For each animal purchased, your name goes in the hat. 2.) Refer a customer to us. For each animal the customer purchases, your name goes in the hat. The customer themselves must provide us your name.

EPD Definitions

Listed below are the definitions of American gelbvieh Association Epds and the units they are published in.

Calving Ease Direct (CE): percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This Epd can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.

Birth Weight (BW): predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.

Weaning Weight (WW): predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

Yearling Weight (YW): predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

Milk (MK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater tM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. tM index = MK Epd + ½ WW Epd

Calving Ease Daughters (CED): represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This Epd is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which heifers have a genetic pre-disposition to calve on their own.

Stayability (ST): predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability Epd is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.

Yield Grade (YG): differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Higher values suggest that progeny will have a lower ratio of lean to fat.

Carcass Weight (CW): differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.

Ribeye Area (REA): differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. greater ribeye areas are preferable.

Marbling (MB): predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass Quality grades.

Fat (FT): differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.

Carcass Value (CV): Expressed in dollar value per head, compares progeny of on animal to another in dollar difference when progeny are sold on a grid. This is a true economic comparison. projected carcass weight, penalties for carcass weights that are too heavy or too light, Quality grade and yield grade premiums and discounts are all included in calculating this dollar value index.

Feedlot Merit (FM): Measures the dollar value associated with the expected gain and feedlot efficiency of progeny when fed in a typical feedlot environment.

If you’re looking for a pair of bulls that will produce a set of uniform calves and also put the maternal qualities into your herd, then take a look at lots 26 and 27. Both outt of JOSH In Focus 237ERY stemming from out 624 cow family. To show you the quality of this family, take a look at the females pictured on this page. To the right is Focused Stack 624Y and at the bottom is 5642J during her last year of production. Focus Stack went on to the Pick of the Herd sale where she brought $4000.00 as a bred heifer. 5624J ended up Dieing on the farm, but her awesome genetics live on throughout much of our herd.
