From the Board President & Executive Director Dear Friends, The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many of our lives in ways that could never have been anticipated. West Haven Community House services were unable to be offered and elaborate health and safety precautions were created so that we could return to providing valuable programming to our children and families and adults with disabilities. We were encouraged to be able to open our programs in July of 2020 as the community began to venture out again. You will see that our usual number of participants during this challenging year were much smaller than pre-pandemic. However, we are very proud to report that programming was a success and everyone that participated received vital services in a healthy, safe, and protected environment. We are very proud of our staff and particularly want to commend our Community Connections Residential and Day staff who worked throughout the shutdowns and difficult times. They were our front-line heroes, and we thank them for their dedication, loyalty and commitment to our residents and other day program participants. We welcomed back staff from our Head Start and Children & Youth Services programs, and we are grateful for their willingness to return to help these preschool and elementary school children experience valuable socialization activities to reduce the isolation of being home for so many months, many with remote learning and others with very little contact outside of the home. We are so honored to have dedicated staff and board members and a community that supported us through this pandemic with both financial and compassionate resources to ensure that our agency and programs thrived. Your continued support enables us to provide the best possible enrichment, protection, and compassionate care for adults with intellectual disabilities, children and families. Sincerely,

William Heffernan President, Board of Directors

Leave a Legacy When contemplating a pathway that will lead to your personal legacy, you can feel confident that a gift to the West Haven Community House Endowment Fund will be a gift that lasts a lifetime strengthening our community and making an everlasting impact for generations to come. The Community House Endowment was created 23 years ago so that individuals can help the Community House ‘in perpetuity’ and to honor or memorialize a loved one. The other source of revenue to this fund is through donations in honor of birthdays, holidays or in memory of someone who has passed away. Gifts may also be made, or a named fund established, through one’s will. We are very appreciative of everyone who has contributed to making this a success and are proud to announce that, as of June 2021, our Endowment was worth $977,330. The Endowment Fund is professionally managed by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, which reports back to the Endowment Committee appointed by the West Haven Community House Board of Directors.

Our Impact:

As THE cornerstone social service agency in West Haven, the Community House is valued for our professional services, our leadership, and our positive impact in the community. For more than seven decades, the Community House has become a leader in identifying, collaborating and implementing services that meet the changing needs of the City of West Haven; its diverse families, educational structure and socio-economic challenges.

Our Mission:

The West Haven Community House exists to facilitate healthy, productive, independent and meaningful lives for children, adolescents, families and individuals with disabilities.

Our History:

Established in 1941, we were responsible for West Haven’s: • first Head Start program • first licensed out of school child care center • first residential living and vocational training facilities for adults with intellectual disabilities.

What We Do:

We provide the best possible enrichment, protection and compassionate care for children, families, and also adults with intellectual disabilities. Our critical services strengthen families and improve the quality of life for hundreds of people in our community by: • offering working families peace of mind knowing their children are cared for during out of school hours, • giving children a “Head Start” in life, and • providing opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities to experience community living and increased independence.
