Dartmouth Regatta 25 Aug-27 Aug 2016
For over 190 years, we have celebrated our affinity with the River, taking the opportunity at this time of year to enjoy waterborne and land events under the title of ‘Royal Regatta’. The first recorded competitive regatta was held on the river Dart at Dartmouth in 1822. Other informal regattas were held in some of the following years leading to the establishment of Dartmouth Regatta in 1834. The regatta later became known as the Port of Dartmouth
Regatta and in 1856 the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta. The Regatta is based around a programme of rowing and sailing events, but also incorporates a busy programme of activities including air displays, fireworks, a large fair, and many other smaller events that happen in and around the town centre. Nearly 100,000 people visit Dartmouth during the Regatta period, swelling the towns population of approximately 6,000 and making Dartmouth Regatta one of the largest public events in the South West, and the second largest Regatta after Cowes Week. A sailors paradise, don’t miss the absolute best what Dartmouth has to offer. For more information please contact. Tel: 01803 834001 The Quay, Dartmouth, Devon, TQ6 9PS
British Firework Championships Plymouth The most anticipated event in the city’s annual events calendar will see thousands of spectators heading up to the Hoe for two evenings of entertainment, culminating in spectacular fireworks displays from six companies seeking the coveted title of British Firework Champions. However, this year sees an extra special title up for grabs as it is the Champion of Champions.
class mass public art event to the streets, parks and open spaces of the English Riviera and Exeter.
For 10 weeks in the summer of 2016, life-size rhino sculptures will inhabit the streets, showcasing the wealth of artistic talent in the area, while highlighting the significant conservation threat facing wild rhinos and how the local business community can make a difference. Similar Wild in Art events have run throughout the country, including The Great Gorillas Project in 2013, generating huge increases in footfall, public interest and media coverage providing opportunities for sponsors to benefit from association with and coverage from the project. The Great Big Rhinos will be invading the streets from Saturday 30th July until Sunday 9th October 2016. They will then be at Paignton Zoo from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th October 2016 before being auctioned for charity in November 2016. The funds raised from the auction will be used by Paignton Zoo to support rhino conservation. For more info. www.paigntonzoo.org.uk

Great Big Rhino Project For 10 weeks in the summer, life-size rhino sculptures will rampage through the streets, parks and open spaces of the English Riviera and Exeter creating a fun trail for all the family to enjoy. Â The Great Big Rhino Project will bring a world class mass public art event, while highlighting the significant conservation threat facing wild rhinos and how the local business community can make a difference. The Great Big Rhinos will be invading the streets from Saturday 30th July until Sunday 9th October. They will then be at Paignton Zoo from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th October before being auctioned for charity on Thursday 3rd November. The funds raised from the auction will be used by Paignton Zoo to support rhino conservation.
Raise a glass for rhino conservation Bays Brewery has launched a new ale to celebrate The Great Big Rhino Project. Bays will donate 10p per pint and 10p per bottle, while Wetherspoon’s will give £10 per cask (which works out at roughly 13p per pint). The Paignton micro-brewery is a long-time supporter of Paignton Zoo and its conservation projects. Since 2013 the partnership between Paignton Zoo and Bays Brewery has raised nearly £10,000 for the conservation of rhinos, giraffes and gorillas.
The million-dollar rhino The Cockington Chocolate Company has smothered a medium-sized rhino model in an incredible 15 kilos of quality chocolate for The Great Big Rhino Project. The stunning creation – named Savanna - will be raffled to raise funds for the conservation of Critically Endangered rhinos. Raffle tickets for Savanna will be sold over the summer from both Paignton Zoo and the Cockington Chocolate Company’s workshop. The winning ticket will be drawn in September; one lucky contestant will walk away with the medium-sized rhino model and the 15 kilos of chocolate – if they can carry it!

Having just completed playing on every stage at the Isle of Wight and Glastonbury Festival plus a US tour which is almost sold out. What’s On South West Magazines artist of the year ‘The High Kings’ have a brand new album out called ‘Grace & Glory’
Martin Furey and Darren Holden – each had a wealth of history in the music business behind them, but knew that in order to maintain any level of creative interest they would have to boldly go where no other Irish ballad group had gone before.
Almost ten years ago, four Irish singers, performers and songwriters decided to take a calculated risk. The constituent parts of The High Kings – Finbarr Clancy, Brian Dunphy,
In truth, back in the mid-late Noughties, Ireland needed a group like The High Kings. The heyday of ballad groups such as The Clancy Brothers and The
Dubliners was a distant memory for generations of music fans, and to have another bunch of Irish lads taking up the baton and continuing the tradition was great news to thousands of fans worldwide. “We could sing well, play our instruments well and harmonise well,” says Darren Holden, humbly underselling somewhat the numerous skill sets of the individual members.
“People were looking for guys with character, presence – not just cardboard cut-outs – so the respective experience we all had wasn’t just helpful but essential.” The four members immediately knew that something special was taking place (“we knew within the space of a few songs that there was magic”), and within months had clicked as a creative unit as well as friends. The self-titled debut album, released in 2008, reached a highly impressive number two on Billboard Magazine’s World Music chart. It was during The High Kings second tour of the US in 2011, however – having graduated from playing small venues to larger halls as they promoted their followup album, Memory Lane, which also crashed into Billboard’s World Music chart – that everyone involved realised the fanbase was growing into something that no one had predicted.
Subsequently, the group’s tour of Ireland sold out within hours. “We didn’t expect that,” admits Darren, “and then about three gigs into that tour we realised we had touched not only a nerve but also a memory. People loved what we were doing, and they would tell us after the shows that what we did and how we were doing it meant so much to them – they had waited years for a group like us.” As if that wasn’t good enough, The High Kings received the stamp of approval from the likes of Christy Moore and, perhaps more pertinently, Ronnie Drew, the lead singer of The Dubliners, and the man behind one of Ireland’s most recognisable and enduring ballad voices. The High Kings had achieved what many had thought improbable, if not impossible: they were moving the Irish ballad tradition into the here and now, carrying along with them the
steadfast older fans while simultaneously bringing it to a new audience. “The gigs were getting bigger and bigger, and we felt we were breaking down barriers.” More was to come in 2013 with the group’s third studio album, Friends For Life, which featured original songs among the traditional fare. Such an undertaking had always been discussed, reveals Darren. “On Memory Lane, we stuck to the tried and tested formula, and that was a really good plan, because the album sold very well. But with Friends For Life, which was originally planned as another covers record, we worked with Sharon Shannon, who co-produced, and that changed things significantly for us. She initially heard one of our songs – Oh Maggie, which I wrote – and she really thought it should be included. And then several more songs written by group members followed.” 61
According to Darren, The High Kings stepped out of the shadows by taking the original song writing route. “We were delighted! We felt the songs were really good, and we sensed it was the next step. We finally sensed we were about to embark on a new chapter for The High Kings, rather than repeat the approach we took on the first two albums.” Stepping out of the shadows inevitably threw light onto their own songwriting talents. Credibility, too? “Absolutely. With versions of well known or previously written songs, you can get four people talented enough who are very handy singing them, but with original songs you mark your own territory, you stand out. And we were lucky, thankfully – we had a couple of original songs that were hits in various parts of the world.”
The development of original songwriting – ballad-style but with contemporary touches – from each member of The High Kings continues apace, but balance must be maintained. To a degree, expectations have to be met while still moving specific creative elements forward, which is why the group’s fourth studio album, Grace & Glory, takes them back to the essentials that kickstarted their career in the first place. “We felt it was the right time to park the original songs for a while,” says Martin. “We did a twoyear tour for the Friends for Life album, and then we put out a live show album/DVD – Four Friends Live. That was received so well that we felt a back-to-basics approach – traditional ballad songs with new arrangements – would be good.”
On Tour ... You can catch The High Kings at the following UK venues 17th November 2016 The Stables, Milton Keynes 19th November 2016 Union Chapel, London 62
To say that The High Kings are charting a new course for Irish ballad music – equal parts rousing and reflective, energetic and insightful – is an understatement. They are, essentially, marking out a new and bright era for Irish folk music, and aiming to bring a broad demographic along for the journey. “With Grace & Glory we’re going to achieve that,” affirms Martin. “There is something for everybody on the album, and any doubters out there might just discover there’s a whole lot more to us than perceptions would have them believe. Previous High Kings albums have been stepping-stones, but this one sees us on top of things.” Time to move on, then? “Full steam ahead!”
Grace & Glory is now out on Celtic Collections, and is available to buy from all good record stores, as well from www.thehighkings. com and iTunes.

#TimeOfMyLifeTour Ronan Keating announces autumn UK tour 2016 will see Ronan take to the road, touring his tenth studio album, aptly entitled Time Of My Life, which was released in February. Right now, Keating is all about this album… the album of his life. A record on which he’s dug deep, pushed hard and been unafraid of wearing his heart (and his tunes) on his sleeve. The album is the first fruits of not only a rejuvenating relationship with his new record label Decca, but also a genuinely content place in life and love. These are instantly affecting songs of celebration and emotion, of love and loss and more importantly… honesty. Keating says, “This is the music I’ve always wanted to make. This is who I am and it feels absolutely right. To go out with all this new material, and playing guitar, will be so exciting. These songs were written for live performance”. Twenty two years of making music have resulted in an impressive tally of achievements, including 40 million album sales with Boyzone, 22 million copies sold of nine solo albums, 14 solo Number One singles, an Ivor Novello Award for Picture Of You (1997). But they are not something Keating is dwelling on, right now. He is all about pushing on with a bold new chapter. You can catch Ronan Keating on Friday 9th September @ Plymouth Pavilions

Trena Marie My name is Trena Marie, I am originally from Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales but now based in Paignton, Devon. I have been involved in the professional entertainment business from a young age. I have been singing professionally since the age of 18 and have performed at venues throughout Wales and the Westcountry, from pubs, clubs and hotels to Holiday parks and at corporate events. This could include hosting a full night of entertainment or performing a cabaret set. My repertoire contains a vast selection of music ranging from the 60s to present day chart hits, spanning the genres of pop, country, disco, ballads etc.
I perform an Ellie Goulding tribute show. I have managed to match Ellies unique vocal tone as closely as possible and mimic her on stage presence and mannerisms in my shows. I am also currently touring the UK with a theatre show, as one of the main vocalists. We have performed at many theatres already and due to the success of the show it is planned to continue into a 2017 tour. A rock celebration in the Royal tradition RETURNS TO UK
Created and produced by Queen’s Roger Taylor, the Queen Extravaganza returns to the UK to play a special tour celebrating the 40th anniversary of Queen’s iconic album, ‘A Night At The Opera’, long viewed as one of the greatest rock albums of all time, which produced such classic tracks as, ‘You’re My Best Friend’, “Love of My Life”, Taylor’s own “I’m In Love With My Car”, as well as the band’s legendary “Bohemian Rhapsody”.
off and play around with the music when we were in concert.”
The 90-minute show, which kicks off in Plymouth on 28th October and tours the UK for dates across the country ending at London’s Eventim Apollo on 20th November, features Queen’s classic hits and some surprises for the true fans.
“I’m incredibly proud of these guys and it’s going to be a nostalgic and stunning night out for anyone who goes along,” says Taylor
The Queen Extravaganza, produced by Roger Taylor with fellow Queen band member Brian May, is specially designed to enable new fans, together with fans of old, to celebrate the music of Queen and has already played over 160 dates across the world and made appearances on TV on shows such as American Idol where the performance was seen by over 20 million people. “It’s our own official tribute band”, says Roger Taylor. “These guys are incredible gifted musicians in their own right and certainly aren’t just dressing up in costumes and pretending to be Queen. They actually play the music better than we ever did. Or, maybe ‘better’ isn’t the right word. But they play a more perfect version, with a more polished sound, whereas we always used to go
“We like to think of it as a rock celebration in the Royal tradition.” For their UK dates later this year, The Queen Extravaganza will perform the entire ‘A Night At the Opera’ in full, plus a selection of many of Queen’s greatest hits.
Capturing the fabled design and excitement of Queen’s legendary live performances, the late great Mark Fisher created the staging and production elements for The Queen Extravaganza. The May-Taylor hand picked line-up of The Queen Extravaganza band is: vocalist Marc Martel; guitarist Nick Radcliffe; bassist FrancoisOlivier Doyon; drummer Tyler Warren; and keyboardist Darren Reeves. www.queenextravaganza.seetickets.com You can see the Queen Extravaganza at Plymouth Pavilions on 28th October 2016 To Book Tickets 0845 146 1460 *calls cost 2p per minute plus your phone company’s access charge. www.plymouthpavilions.com
