55+ Equity Release Scaremongering by ill reported articles can mean that those for whom equity release is a solution will be put off seeking further advice. Jan Bull of 55+ Equity Release has these tips: • Get the facts straight by seeking expert advice from a specialist equity release adviser. • Meet your adviser face to face and involve your family (there should be no charge). • Take your time and ensure you understand everything before you go ahead. Equity release is not a one size fits all solution these days and so your adviser will explore the many options available to ensure you have the right plan, if any at all.

SOAP STAR JESSIE WALLACE LAUNCHES THE WHITE ROCK THEATRE’S MAGICAL PANTOMIME!
essie Wallace, who will be making her pantomime debut playing the role of The Fairy Godmother in the White Rock Theatre’s pantomime, Cinderella this year, made an early visit to Hastings to take part in a press launch on Wed 7 October at the Bannatyne Spa Hotel. Jessie was joined for photographs in the beautiful grounds of the hotel by fellow cast members Daisy Steere who will play Cinderella and Ben McMillan who will play Prince
Charming. They were welcomed to the town by Hastings Mayor, Cllr Bruce Dowling. Adding extra magic to the proceedings was the arrival of two stunning white Gelderlander horses pulling a spectacular Cinderella carriage, complete with coachmen supplied by Drayhorse Shires, Kent. Also in attendance at the launch were the Mayor of Hastings; Councillor Bruce Dowling and pantomime sponsors Shades Tiles R Us. For the past 15 years Jessie has become a national treasure thanks to her performance as Kat Slater in the popular BBC soap EastEnders, winning numerous awards and legions of fans. Jessie’s other television credits include ITV’s The Bill and Wild at Heart and her critically acclaimed leading role in Miss Marie Lloyd Queen of the Music Hall for BBC Four. In 2008 she also took part in the sixth series of Strictly Come Dancing. No stranger to the stage, Jessie has appeared in the West End productions of Rent and Haunted as well as the 25th anniversary production of Stepping Out in the role of Sylvia. Most recently Jessie returned to the stage playing Lil in the Theatre Royal Stratford East’s musical production of Fings Ain’t Wot they Used T’be directed by Terry Johnson. Executive producer of Cinderella, Daryl Back, said “We are delighted Jessie will be joining the cast of our spectacular pantomime Cinderella in Hastings. Jessie is such a popular face on television we’re thrilled she’ll be joining us in pantoland and giving audiences at the White
Rock her take on The Fairy Godmother.” The White Rock Theatre’s General Manager, Lorna Hollister, added “Each year we’ve seen the White Rock’s pantomime become more and more successful. We are very much looking forward to welcoming Jessie Wallace to the Theatre, and know that she will be very popular with the Hastings audience.” Cinderella is produced by One From the Heart in association with HQ Theatres, the partnership behind the recent White Rock Theatre pantomime successes including Dick Whittington starring Sheila Read in 2013 and Aladdin starring Louie Spence in 2014. The perfect gift idea for the home or in the workplace, these limited run of prints are priced at just £10 each plus £3.50 p&p. A donation of £4 per print will go directly to St Michael’s Hospice. Drawn on inspiration from the company’s days of excursions from the town, renowned artist Bradley Hutchings was commissioned to design two periods of the golden age of coach travel – one from the 1930s, the other from the 1950s. The highly colourful A3 prints feature Empress’s first coach a 1929 Dennis 20 seater near to Hastings Pier with founder Harry Philips depicted riding his Motorcycle into the shot! For the second image, Empress’s legendary Bedford OB Plaxton 29 seater which Harry bought new in 1950 and was sold in 1972 can be found waiting on the seafront near to Pelham Crescent. Three times Lord Mayor of London, Dick Whittington, returns to London’s Guildhall! Dartford’s Magical Pantomime Adventure is set to be the cat’s whiskers! Shane Richie, who plays the role of Dick Whittington in The Orchard Theatre’s pantomime this year, took part in a medieval press launch on Wed 23 September at Guildhall, City of London. Shane posed for photos with the statue of the historic figure himself, Dick Whittington, outside the Guildhall Art Gallery. Shane was also joined by Mayor of Dartford,
Ian Armitt, who met him in The Great Hall, handing over his Mayor’s livery collar. Dick Whittington is produced by Qdos Entertainment, the world’s biggest pantomime producer which has established a reputation for staging large-scale productions packed with special effects and lots of laugh-out-loud comedy for all the family.

DVORAK - Stabat Mater
CHRISTMAS EVENTS AT MICHELHAM PRIORY November and December
A rare opportunity to hear one of the great works in the choral repertoire. The Stabat Mater is a mediaeval poem meditating on the suffering of Mary, the mother of Jesus, as she stands at the foot of the Cross. The fact that all three of Dvorak’s children died while he was setting these words to music adds even greater poignancy to them. Despite this terrible tragedy, Dvorak’s music betrays no hint of self pity, and although intensely moving is also very beautiful and uplifting. The Society are delighted to welcome 4 soloists from the Royal Academy arranged through the Josephine Baker Trust. ENGLAND’S ONLY CURLING RINK OPENS FOR THE NEW SEASON
ave YOU tried curling yet? England’s one and only ice rink, dedicated to this unique Olympic sport, is now open for its 13th season at Fenton’s Rink, just 3 miles from the centre of Tunbridge Wells. The rink has become a very popular destination for a day or evening out with a difference – with everyone able to join in the fun of trying something completely different. Most of our visitors are beginners, so we make sure there are experienced coaches on hand to guide you through this simple game – easy to play, but difficult to master!! Whilst the game is played on ice, it does NOT involve skates! We provide non-slip shoes that enable beginners to gain confidence on the ice while learning to play. It’s not all about beginners at Fenton’s Rink, though. Over the years, we have seen the development of really talented players – and we were delighted last season when our young Junior Ladies team, all from around Tunbridge Wells, won the European Challenge and played in the World Championships – a first for England! Many local schools take part in our annual English Schools Championships – so we are developing the game, not just for fun but as a serious sport too! So whether you want to come along for a game with some friends, book for a special occasion, like birthdays, anniversaries, stag or hen parties – or want to know more about taking up the sport, just contact us – we have something for everyone.

Our neighbours had their wedding anniversary do here and everything was wonderful. Menus start from under ten pounds for two courses and all wines and beers are sensibly priced too. Top quality, award winning modern British food and service, we can’t wait to go back. I think I shall have Prawns to start, followed by a Fillet Steak Beef Wellington, with a glass of Rioja, and the Dark Chocolate Mousse to finish. I really can’t wait. nown as Westewelle in the Domesday survey, Westfield, East Sussex is one of the largest villages in the area with a population of around 2,750. The village lies five miles (8 km) north of Hastings. A prominent sight when entering the village from the south is the church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Its many features include extensive buttressing, a 12th-century porch and a 14th-century font with an elaborate 17th-century cover. Above the door to the tower there is carved a Royal Coat of Arms with the list of vicars since 1250 set below. Looking towards the nave there is a Norman arch with squint windows to the side, cut through the 32 inches of stone. Another feature at the road entrance is the lychgate, with its four carved angels; this was added in 1887. The history of Westfield has been extensively researched by a resident of Westfield descended from a family who appear in the records from 1552.
On November 5th 1908, Westfield’s last windmill was burnt down. As it was the evening of the village Bonfire Societies torch light procession, naturally the Bonfire Boys fell under suspicion. However , nothing was ever proved and so the culprits were never found. Visit Westfield village for an spectacular display of Christmas lights throughout December. The residents of Westfield will be, once again decorating their houses this year to raise money for the St Michaels Hospice. This display is incredible and great for all the family. Keep an eye on St Michael’s Facebook page for information such about the big switch on, nearer the time. Last year Westfield residents raised an amazing £8,400 and are hoping to beat that total this year.

The 5 Biggest Mistakes Made By Landlords 1. Not investing in kitchens and bathrooms - It costs relatively little to tile a bathroom and provide clean and new worktops in kitchens. Kitchens and bathrooms are a major “turnoff” on viewings. 2. Installing light cream coloured carpets - They look modern, but stain quickly – Darker shades are much more serviceable. 3. Not reviewing rent regularly, particularly when the same tenant stays in the property. Allowing rent levels to fall behind market rate can significantly impact your property. 4. Not Carrying out credit checks on tenants- The most credit worthy looking tenant may have CCJs and a record of exploiting unwary landlords. 5. Not putting up a “to let” board- As a result no-one passing and no one locally knows it’s available to let.

CHRISTMAS TREE FARM Main Road, A28, Westfield, Nr Hastings, E. Sussex. TN35 4QE Tel 01424 753413 07734 210508
www.littledownfarmchristmastrees.co.uk Christmas is coming soon and it isn’t the same without a real British Christmas tree. There’s nothing the same as coming home on a cold winters night opening the front door to the aroma of a real Christmas tree. This tradition has been going on for hundreds of years, and brings back happy memories and excitement for children and of course adults. We all love the experience of choosing a tree and of course deciding how big, or how small you want your tree. Of course you need a large selection and Little Down Christmas Tree Farm has a full range to choose from. Not only trees from 2ft - 45ft, but also 6 different varieties with different characteristics. Little Down Farm has been voted one of the best places to choose your Christmas tree in the United Kingdom and has been crowned Champion Tree Grower by the British Christmas Trees Growers Association. Under licence from the BCTGA Little Down Farm has to follow strict growing and marketing practices. So choosing a tree from us you are guaranteed to have a British grown tree of the highest quality. You won’t find that at most retailers! Little Down Farm credentials include ‘official supplier to the BBC’, 10 Downing Street, London and other high profile businesses.
For the last 20 years they have been working hard to produce trees that are second to none. In the last 12 months there has been a lot of ploughing, cultivating fencing, planting, pruning and shaping trees ready for you this Christmas. This season don’t compromise by going to a normal retailer who has no control on the freshness of your Christmas tree. If you had trouble with your sight you would go to an optician. If you had problems with your teeth, you would go to a dentist. A Christmas tree really is no different, ‘you should go to a Christmas tree grower specialist!
There are six different varieties to choose from and they are available until Christmas Eve, after which Santa has to use them.
We look forward to seeing you. As What’s On Magazine went to print Little Down Farm had been put forward as a finalist in the UK Champion Tree Grower competition.
Come to a grower where you can see the trees growing in the wild, trees which have been managed, grown and carefully harvested. All trees harvested are replaced in the Spring. Of course when you choose your tree, you will get help if you need it, together with professional advice. Your tree will be netted and if you have a stand we will trim the bottom to fit your stand - free of charge of course. We can also supply a wooden stand free of charge (for trees up to 7.5ft). We have a fleet of 4x4 vehicles on the farm so we can deliver your tree even if the weather gets difficult. Come and choose your tree from us 2ft 45ft, cut, pot grown, (not potted).
Jon Baker at 10 Downing Street
We will accept any money off coupons from any Christmas Tree Farm within a 15 mile radius.* *Terms and conditions apply.
Archers Of Westfield: We have been supplying Westfield and the surrounding area with prime quality meat from our current premises for 80 years, and from the village even longer. It has always been our policy to sell the best quality meat we can, prepare it to the highest possible standards, and present it to the public with the best service possible. The vast majority of our meat comes from within a 30-40 mile radius of Westfield via local farmers and wholesalers. The two nearest abattoirs to Westfield are Tottingworth Farms Ltd, who produce good quality beef from their own farm, as well as beef, free range pork and local lamb from surounding farms, as does Ken Ballard Ltd based in Marden, Kent. We have also been sourcing pure pedigree Sussex cattle from David Etches at Marlpitts Farm, just a mile or so from the shop, overlooking the Brede valley.

Cindy Crawford Pages.indd 2
Cindy Crawford Cindy Crawford was the cornerstone of the golden age of the supermodel in the 1990s. She blazed a trail during that decade, seamlessly moving between the runway to unconventional outlets, such as cutting-edge MTV, Super Bowl commercials, and even Playboy magazine. In her latest book ‘Becoming’ International supermodel Cindy Crawford chronicles her life and career, sharing stories and lessons learned, and features her most memorable images.
n the eve of her fiftieth birthday, Cindy looks back, photo shoot by photo shoot, on a remarkable career and various life lessons she absorbed. She discusses her earliest modeling years and learning how to become less self-conscious in front of a camera; trusting her own instincts about creating positive messages about a healthy and strong body image that she knew would reach women of all ages; her feelings about becoming a wife and a mother; and her thoughts about turning fifty and what she would tell her younger self if she had the chance. The photographs span her entire career, beginning from the mid 1980s, and feature unpublished images from her personal archive in addition to images by every top name in fashion photography, including Annie Leibovitz, Arthur Elgort, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, Irving Penn, Patrick Demarchelier, and Richard Avedon, among others. A beautifully illustrated series of stories, “Becoming” is a smart and engaging book that sheds light into the life and work of an extraordinary woman.”
Cindy Crawford Pages.indd 3
What’s On Magazine met up with Cindy Crawford to find out more about her new book. Can you tell us how the book came about? I never really imagined doing a book like this. A couple of years ago I was having lunch with two women who I had worked with for a long time. We used to meet up once a year and look ahead, discussing future plans. I was 47 at the time and somehow over the course of that lunch the idea came to me of 50 iconic images for each of my 50 years. I didn’t just want to do a coffee table book of pictures because my career has been so much more than just pictures. I had planned to do 50 essays as well talking about my life. Once planning for the book had got under way that format went completely out of the window and we ended up using a lot more than 50 images. I think we got down to about 150 images and even then I had to leave out some favourites. I choose the images which helped move the story along and those which made a point or had a big impact.
I think in modern life we are sometimes so busy looking forward that we forget to look back. There is a great television programme called ‘Masterclass’ which makes you look at yourself and ask yourself questions so that at the end, you learn a lot about yourself and this has very much been the experience I have had. Its lessons like learning to say no, taking chances, owning your brand and, while I learnt these specifically in the fashion industry they are lessons that can be applied to anyone. I have dedicated this book to my kids and I hope I have managed to pass on many of these lessons to them. What do your children think about your fame? Well I am just their mum, by the time I had children I wasn’t on the cover of a magazine every month. As they got older they see people like Kanye West wearing a T-Shirt with my name on it and suddenly I became cool in their eyes. I also did a Taylor Swift video and that gave me great credibility with my kids. A career is more than just a product of the work, its the journey and the lessons you learn on the way which can sometimes be hard. Where did you originally grow up? I grew up in the middle of the United States in a small town near Illinois called DeKalb. My father was an electrician and my parents got married very young. It was a typical small town upbringing and I would play outside and have barbecues. My brother died when I was 10 and that was the first thing that happened in my childhood that was a life changer for me. Its the first time I saw that there is not always a happy ending in life and there are no guarantees. When I was in High School a local photographer asked to take my picture for a local paper and that was the first seed that started my career in fashion. I was insecure about a lot of things and I write about this in the book. One of those things was my beauty mark. My sisters said to me that if it is on this side (pointing to left) its an ugly mark, only if its on the other side its a beauty mark. So I definitely got teased as a kid but that little thing that was my achilles heel became my trademark and I think that’s a great lesson for young people to embrace their individuality, because you never know, that one thing may be the thing that people remember you for. Has the modelling always been a glamorous experience? No, in the early days I used to do shoots for fashion which involved just the product so your head wouldn’t even be in the picture. Even in the pictures that showed my face for local department stores we had to do our own hair and makeup, modelling was just a job that I did, it wasn’t who I am.
Cindy Crawford Pages.indd 4
When I finally got to New York and people were doing my makeup for me, it was like being Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Of course I learned important lessons in those early days which are so important now. I learned to be professional, to show up on time, do your job and be a team player. Each photographer who I have worked with over the years has taught me something different and I talk about many of them in the book. My first mentor was a Chicago photographer called ‘Victor Skrebneski’ and he taught me that when you are modelling it’s not all about you, it’s all about whatever you are selling, so whether it’s an item of clothing or a watch you have to know how to make people want that item and translate the story of what your are portraying. How did the transition to being a Supermodel come about? You have to move to one of the fashion Capitals for that to happen, so I moved to New York and while I was actually quite old to be starting on that road at 20, I already had some good shots to show clients. Fate took a hand in that a very popular model of the time had moved out of the modelling business due to drug problems and I looked very much like her, so I instantly was able to get in with many of the top photographers as they were searching for a similar look. Shortly after I got to New York I did a photo shoot for Vogue in St. Barts, and because of that shoot I got to work with the photographer Richard Avedon on a Vogue cover. He is one of the great photographers of his time, but posing for him is a very slow process because he used very large cameras which were slow to operate. He taught me to look away between each exposure and when you look back at the camera have a thought, even if its ‘buy me, I’m 3 Dollars,’ because 3 dollars was the cover cost of Vogue at the time. I use that technique to this day and that would be my biggest tip for anyone who is modelling apart from the obvious..... Be on time, be professional, have a good attitude. I think the Supermodels came about because, all of a sudden, photographers were taking pictures of groups of popular models together rather than individually. Herb Ritts had taken a photograph which is now a famous image of 5 models together, one of which was me, for Rolling Stone magazine.

Peter Lindbergh, another photographer was asked to find the face of the 90’s for British Vogue, and he said that he didn’t want to pick one face so he choose me, Christine Brinkley, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Tatjana Patitz. The picture celebrated the differences between us rather than trying to make us look all the same and that image formed the basis of the George Michael Freedom 90 Video which was just a great song and was played all the time on MTV. That all lead up to my Supermodel moment which was a Versace show in 1991, when the George Michael song was playing as Linda, Christine, Naomi and I all walked out at the end of the show skipping to the song, that was definitely a moment for me. Fashion was so ‘Front and centre’ at the time and being a famous model was like being a rock star. Music and fashion were merging together.
my phone and the camera is facing me and I look down and think ‘Oh my God that’s frightening’, but 10 years from now I will be longing for my 50 year old self, so its all about celebrating the past, but also being able to embrace the future.
What do you think of the current Supermodels? I think they are all super exciting and I am a little bit envious because they have the platform of social media that my generation didn’t have. They are not only able to do great shoots with great photographers but they can also take control of their image a little bit more, and project their personality which I think is a great advantage, and of course a great responsibility. They are their own PR agents now.
How do you think you can give confidence to teenagers growing up today who are worried about the way they look? The one thing I learned was to complement the behaviour of my children rather than their looks, it is important that you see the efforts they have made rather than any esteem about how they look. Having said that, it is still hard for them as we live in a very visual world. Most of us remember when we were that age and things were not hugely different even then. Both of my children are in High School now and my husband and I realise how brutal it can be. I think just being there and drying their tears and explaining to them that perhaps the reason a person is being mean to them is probably because that person is insecure in themselves.
How did you move into other business projects? I never knew anything about business but I was a good student and I just paid attention. If there was an advertising agent on set, I was always listening to what was being said and I was always open to learn anything new. I had been exercising regularly with a trainer in my mid 20’s and women would come up to me in the street asking me how I kept fit. Jane Fonda has done some very successful fitness videos for the generation before me so I thought how do I share this access to fitness for someone my age. We developed a fitness video which was really successful and this gave me the confidence to take other chances in business. Whatever the latest thing is, its all about sharing an idea with others and many of the other business ideas I have completed are based around sharing my experiences.

What’s the future for you now? Well I am not walking down the runway anymore or taking my portfolio around to photographers, but I am still doing pictures and publicity. I have been working with Omega Watches for 20 years and they have let me grow with them. I started just modelling their watches but over the years they have got me involved with other projects and I even went to the Olympics with them. Last year my daughter went to Peru on a philanthropic trip with them where they are providing eye surgery for developing nations.
Thank You Cindy Becoming By Cindy Crawford is now available published by Rizzoli.
What’s the secret to your fitness now? The secret is that there is no secret, its all about getting enough sleep, eating well, drinking water and exercising. I don’t love going down the gym but I love how it makes me feel afterwards. I work out 3 times a week and cycle with my husband and enjoy lots of walking which my grandmother swears by. I don’t judge myself by a 25 year old’s standards, sometimes I accidentally turn on

Birds of a Feather
lot of customers have commented on how many Goldfinches are visiting their garden feeders.
Generally at this time of year the numbers of these super looking birds increases. Squabbling over the feeders with lots of swearing and flight duels is par for the course, it wasn’t many years ago when this chirpy little Finch was regarded as a rare garden visitor. Sunflower hearts are their favourite, they will stay on the feeder munching their messy Juvenile
way through the seeds until knocked off by a hungrier bird. You may still notice a few juveniles, they lack the red face but have the bright yellow wing flash. Allan.......... Feathers Wild Bird Care www.featherswildbirdcare.co.uk shop.featherswildbirdcare.co.uk
