APPEAL: PLEASE HELP A LOCAL CHILD What’s On In Our Backyard asks for the support of local businesses and individuals in raising vital funds for much needed equipment and/or treatment for local families with children who live with disabilities or special needs. We are starting our appeal in aid of a gorgeous little boy aged 4 called Angus who lives in Salt Ash. Angus is the third born to parents Melissa and Aaron Gordon and he is a particularly gentle, intelligent and lovable little boy. Having already had to come to terms with their daughter Aaliyah, born three years previously, being diagnosed with Downs Syndrome, the family were given the diagnosis that at aged one year, Angus was showing the characteristic behaviour of Autism Spectrum Disorder. This means that although he looks like any other little boy on the surface, he is unable to communicate or experience the world like other kids do. For his parents this often means that undertaking simple everyday tasks and activities which most of us take for granted, like shopping and going to the park, can be hugely stressful as he is prone to running away and throwing himself on the ground, unable to comprehend the danger of a busy road and often dangerous landscape. Angus is extremely lucky to have the constant love and support of his family, but it’s not been an easy ride for his parents, who have struggled to meet the huge cost of making sure both Aaliyah and Angus get the treatment and specialised equipment they need, as well as providing for all three of their children like any other family, on a day to day basis. To bring some normality to everyday situations, as well as making them safer and less stressful, Angus is in desperate need of a special needs stroller which can cost up to $2,000 and this is where you can help. We are beginning our appeal with a request for any saleable items, which can be used for a charity auction. If you are a business owner you may have goods or services we could auction, or if you are a member of the public, you may have some toys/clothes/furniture (anything) which you would like to donate. All proceeds will go towards buying a chair for Angus with any additional funds raised going to Firstchance Early Childhood Intervention Program. Please email saff@ for more info.

We hope you have enjoyed the previous four issues of the magazine as much as we have enjoyed working to provide you with relevant and up to date information to help you keep your kids and families active, healthy and entertained in our local area.

Our ‘Baby’ Turns 1 Year Old

This issue is our biggest and best yet with an additional FOUR EXTRA PAGES, which means as well as our regular ‘Clubs & Classes’, ‘Diary of Events’, ‘Education’ and ‘Party Time’ sections, we have crammed in MORE great articles, MORE competitions and MORE useful information!

With the party season upon us, we have included some interesting ideas on how to celebrate during the summer, in our Feature Article. Continuing on with our ‘celebratory’ theme, don’t miss out on entering the fantastic competitions which are featured throughout the magazine. If you are looking for a summer spruce up, check out our new ‘Home & Garden’ section and get some tips on how you can freshen your home with a new look for the season. Perhaps your 2012 resolve is to get fit: there is some information on how you can do just that with the whole family, on pages 18 and 19.

We continue to be amazed and inspired by local parents as well as small business owners: read about our cover story family on page 17 and we promise you, it will lift your spirits.

Thanks for your support and don’t forget to keep your copy until our next issue, out in April!

FEATURE Our ‘Baby’ Turns 1 Year Old Arriving almost one year after conception, our baby, ‘What’s On In Our Backyard’, was delivered to the 10,000 families of Port Stephens in November 2010. Like many new mums we suffered hard labour, followed by sleep deprivation, exhaustion and virtually zero me time. The rest of the family were left to their own devices while we fussed over our new ‘offspring’; the kids became background noise and our loyal and supportive husbands often cut lonesome figures. It certainly became a journey of discovery for us and our families as we researched activities, events and all things family in Port Stephens. The irony, however, was that it left us little time to enjoy those great ‘things to do’ ourselves. Two years and four magazines on, and we have thankfully begun to find the important balance between nurturing both the family and the business. Today, we are very proud to welcome you to our 1st year birthday edition! We’d love to share the success of the magazine by rewarding some of our readers (see the next page for the amazing prizes we are giving away). But first, we’ve put our thinking caps on and have come up with some child friendly ways to celebrate locally this summer.

1. Plan a mini family bucket list and organise a celebration to die for! Set aside a whole weekend of living life to the fullest. Enjoy some new experiences and celebrate by doing at least two things as a family that you’d like to tick off that bucket list. Call a family meeting, make a written plan and enjoy the process of discovering what you’d like to do together. We are lucky that as a holiday destination, Port Stephens is an ideal place to achieve some of the more adventurous dreams that you may have. This is also a great way to teach the kids about setting and achieving goals in a practical and realistic way. Throw some style into the mix by starting your weekend with a champagne lunch (orange juice for the kids!) and ending it with a sumptuous meal at one of our many local child friendly restaurants. To get you started, here’s some ideas we’ve come up with: • • • • • • •

Learn to sail Learn to scuba dive Swim with dolphins Go skydiving Parasail Learn to surf Ride a horse or camel on the beach

If you are looking for more ideas, check out our ‘What’s On’ pages for heaps of venturesome opportunities.

2. Discover a new beach, phone some friends and enjoy a sunset picnic. What better way to celebrate in Port Stephens than by discovering a new beach, then watching the sun go down whilst

enjoying a picnic. We are certainly spoilt for choice with a myriad of beautiful stretches of sandy beaches, but what about the lesser known little gems which just beg to be discovered. Get your local map out and you will be surprised at what you might find! Tip: Ask a local shopkeeper! They are usually full of priceless local knowledge and advice for those seeking out an ‘off the beaten track’ beach. Be aware though, that these beaches are generally not patrolled and can be prone to dangerous rips and tides. Once you’ve tracked down your new found gem, get some friends over, pack your picnic and enjoy the natural beauty and serenity of a sunset party on the beach while the kids run free.

3. Take the day off and Have a Locavore Party at home with friends. Something we have only recently learnt to do again is allow ourselves a day off. For those of you who work from home, that means power down the laptop and switch off the mobile phone. You’re not available! “So what’s a Locavore”, you may ask? It’s a new and environmentally friendly trend which means you source seasonally available food produced within the local area, thus reducing the need for extra preservatives required when foods are shipped and cutting down on the fuel pollution too. Becoming a Locavore means we can all do our bit to keep the air clean and our families healthy. There are a wide variety of local suppliers from whom you can purchase this kind of produce: butchers, greengrocers, fresh seafood co-ops, the choice is endless in Port Stephens. Tip: Get each invitee to source a local ingredient to bring to the party, dine al fresco and eat, drink and be merry until the sun goes down.

4. And last but not least: Would YOU like to come to our Family Fun Day? We recently asked our Facebook ‘likers’ for suggestions on how they thought we should celebrate our ‘birthday’. One interesting idea which caught our attention was to have a ‘What’s On In Our Backyard Family Fun Day’. This would be an event for: • • • •

Local businesses to showcase their goods and services Families to enjoy a great day out with plenty of entertainment to keep the kids happy Locals to sell their pre-loved goods Us to celebrate with you, and say ‘Hi’

We would love to turn this idea into a reality and would appreciate hearing from anyone who is keen to offer ideas and/ or support for an event like this: by locals for locals. Get in touch now by emailing! In the meantime, we hope you continue with us on our mission to seek out all that there is to keep our families active and entertained in ‘Our Backyard’, Port Stephens.

CLUBS & CLASSES ... with Come Sail ... Sailability Would you love to try sailing but are put off by thought of the cost, or the skills required? Whether you are able-bodied, young or old, rich or poor, or have a disability, you are welcome at Sailability Port Stephens on Grahamstown Dam or at any of the 20+ Sailability clubs in NSW. Experienced volunteers gently introduce newcomers to the joy and freedom of sailing using Access and Walker Bay dinghies, all effectively non-capsizable. For around the price of a cappuccino a week, beginners can set sail in dinghies that are easy to operate yet can still provide excitement. To have a free trial sail, you don’t even have to be a member! And membership is $30 per year, and $7 for additional family members. In a wheel-chair? We can lift you into a boat. Have trouble moving your hands? One boat (and we could fit more) has a joystick control that can be operated even by one’s chin! Sailability is an international organisation that came to Australia from the UK in 1995 and to Grahamstown Dam in 2001. Its aim: to foster low-cost recreational and competitive sailing for everyone, regardless of ability or disability. Right now, Sailability is looking for sailors, volunteers and financial supporters. During the season (October to April), we have groups coming during the week from special classes in schools and from Day Care, while Saturdays are open for instruction and club racing. We also hold 3-day “Intro to

Sailing” courses for those aged 12 years to adult in September, January and usually the Easter school holidays (not in 2012 – our instructors will be competing in the Access World Championships). For the more competitive, Sailability can provide a pathway via local, state and national regattas all the way to the Special Olympics or Paralympics. Learning the ropes with Sailability can be a stepping stone to joining a sailing or yacht club. One of our members, a paraplegic, recently returned from competing in England for selection in the Australian Paralympic team. Three years ago, he had never even thought of sailing! Volunteering is almost as much fun as sailing (and our volunteers sail too; we teach them if necessary – for free!) We are looking for volunteers now on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays to help with our clients, move boats around, administration, etc. Sailability NSW (of which Port Stephens is a branch) is totally volunteer-driven and is a registered charity. At Port Stephens, we receive some funding from Port Stephens Council but survive mainly by the generosity of individuals and organisations. We welcome taxdeductible donations! Check out our website www. and scroll through to the clubs. Or contact our secretary, Richard Byrne, on 4982 9011 (Dam) or 4981 7509 (home).

He starts his day at the bottom of the food chain A new face in a world full of hungry slaves Still amazed by the way that this place can change Cause nothing stays the same when moneys in play He doesn’t know where he will be at the end of the week But the music he’s producing keeps him on his feet Rocking to his beats cause he’s trying to stay free Hip hop is the reason he can be who he wants to be Fighter closer everyday to his knew found fame Writing lyrics that can hit like a bullet to the brain There are some days in the past that he’d want to change But it’s like the rhymes can right the wrongs away Nothing beats the feeling he will get right now Spitting his rhymes in front of a crowd Cause he is doing what he loves and is loving the power To drop the beat and watch the heads turn round

[Chorus] Cause he’s taken some bruises Been told that he’s useless So he takes to them music to prove he can do it And when he does it you better listen To the way he’s been spitting that’s why they call him lucid As a kid he was different from the rest He was stripped of his dignity and his strength A broken mess that was pretty much left for dead In a world of neglect hope become a test He’s gone from heartbreak to being homeless And left alone in this home full of loneliness Been beat up choked and broke to now this A state of mind where he’s rhymes become the dopest Cause he’s done the hard yards and he’s seen the dark side Took him 17 years to get control of his life Now when he writes he gets his rhymes to flow tight Cause he’ll make it there with his name in bright lights He won’t stop fighting till he reaches his goal Even though he’s so poor living off the dole And he won’t forget what he learnt long ago It’s not the size of your footprint it’s the size of your soul

[Chorus] When something needs to be said and the words are hard to say He creates a rhyme to make it sound the right way He’s blessed with this gift no one can take away And the music makes it clear that this feeling wont fade When times get rough and he’s about to give up His music is the only thing to pick him up And before all is lost he will dust his shoulders off And gets ready for the walls he will come across When the weather gets better and his mates are down the beach You can find him writing rhymes trying to chase his dreams Until he feels complete he won’t accept defeat He’ll keep busting beats till he feels his lungs bleed His words are hard hitters like you’re skulling bad liquor By the time that it hits ya he begins to spit quicker Steps to the mic and feel one hundred times richer Every lyric he spits makes his heart grow bigger [Chorus]

PARENTING Nurturing Your Child’s Spirit by Myra Espey

Building a child’s spirit • • • • • • • •

‘Well done, you are the best hugger’ ‘I love your smile’ ‘You always try your best - good try’ ‘Thanks for helping’ ‘You are great with animals’ ‘I liked the way you played with your brother today’ ‘You are such a good listener’ ‘Thanks for waiting for me to finish on the phone’

Breaking a child’s spirit

To be a successful parent, we need to nurture our children’s spirit, not constantly criticise and beat them down in the name of good behaviour, or as it is often put, ‘for their own good”. One of the most important ways in which we can build up (and equally, knock down) a child’s spirit is with the language we use. For a child to know that they are loved and cared for, no matter what, we need to use clear, positive, non judgemental language. This is not always easy, especially when a child is being particularly annoying. However, a calm and consistent response to inappropriate behaviour will, in the end, be the most effective way of dealing with it and modifying behaviour. By breaking a child’s spirit, we create huge problems for ourselves, the children and family. Examples of breaking or building a child’s spirit:

Does your child have behavioural or learning difficulties? Do you find it hard to relate to your child? Presenting One to One or Family Sessions With a New & Very Effective Approach Using the latest in Family Dispute Resolution, Kinesiology & Brain Gym techniques provide you with the tools to... • increase appropriate behaviour • improve reading, spelling, writing and maths • increase co-ordination • improve concentration & focus • improve sporting ability • improve memory • increase self-esteem & confidence ...improve your relationship & better understand your child

Put the fun back into parenting

• • • • • • •

‘You are stupid’ ‘You are a dummy’ ‘You are so slow’ ‘You are always losing things’ ‘You never listen’ ‘Why can’t you be tidy like your brother’ ‘Why are you always losing things’

Seems so obvious and simple, but is surprising how often we forget to say these simple things and how ready we are to criticise and knock our children. Another way to break a child’s spirit is being unfair. Children have an enormous sense of fairness and justice and consequently are hurt by actions they consider to be unfair or unjust. Children are like sponges; they soak up and react to their environment. Another way is when the child feels unloved, unwanted or a nuisance. In this busy age when parents are hardworking and trying to make ends meet, it is often easy to forget that your children need a lot of your time if they are to learn the things they need to grow up as balanced and confident youngsters. You are tired, it’s been a long day at the office and there is so much to be done at home – and they still need your attention. Giving them this attention before they become demanding is a sure way of preventing irritating or more serious problems as they grow into adolescence. Logical and sounds easy – it is when we fully understand what their needs are. It becomes difficult when we focus on our needs before theirs.

How can having a consultation with a Spiritual Intuitive (Psychic) be of benefit you may ask? There are a lot of self-help ideologies around today that promote development of self-awareness. Whilst these have their merits some of us seek more. As intelligent humans we know intuitively that there is more to this universe than simply the here-and-now, leading us to explore the possibilities beyond our current understanding. This is where the talents or gifts of Psychics come into their own. Psychics have highly developed intuitive skills that can be utilised to access the spiritual world, that remains a mystery to most of us. A Psychic consultation can help give clarity to situations that refer to our present physical or emotional condition, future circumstances that may affect us and for some the reassurance that there is evidence of continuation of existence after death through the communication with loved ones who have passed over. As the organiser of the 9th annual Salamander Psychic Fair, Gaye Ellen, who was raised aware of her gifts since childhood and having worked as a professional Psychic Counsellor for over 25 years, believes Psychic Fairs are a way of promoting spiritual intuitive awareness in the wider community, with the hope of helping you to connect to your true self and to understand that anything is possible. The quality of Salamander Psychic Fair, Psychic Readers are second to none for their compassionate guidance with practical and accurate advice. This is of great benefit to the public where a person can have a reading with confidence. Salamander Psychic Fair is a total spiritual experience so… “Come open your mind, nurture your body and inspire your spirit”.

HOME & GARDEN Wanting to freshen your home ... ... for the summer days ahead but don’t know where to start? Wendy Lewis of Indulge Interiors has some simple suggestions to freshen up your room and put the wow factor into your life. Quite often the simple changes are the most effective, for example when looking at your lounge room you can add a feature rug bringing colour, pattern and texture into your room. This is particularly effective if you have hard surface floors as it adds warmth balances texture and improves the acoustics in your room. There and many different rug designs such as sisal, shag, pattern and plain. From this rug you can build your colour scheme and coordinate scatter cushions, table lamps, accessories, artwork and even add a feature coffee table to update your look. These are simple additions without changing your main furniture pieces and having the associated cost. You can also change the look of your room from summer to winter with a few simple changes. If you are doing a larger refurbishment the same principle applies. By choosing a main focal point whether it is a rug or favourite artwork or a feature chair you can use this as a building block for your colour scheme adding furniture pieces, rugs, cushions, accessories and paint colours – the paint should be chosen last as there is a huge range of paint colours to choose from.

KID’S COMPETITION Want to get the kids away from the TV and games console this summer?

Encourage them to spend more time in your backyard by giving them a gardening project! Kids love to follow the progress of a seed which they have planted themselves or enjoy some garden inspired craft. Not only is it educational, but it can engage their interest for hours. To get four lucky kids started, Bunnings Warehouse at Taylor’s Beach have kindly donated some products from their children’s range to give away: two Gardena wheelbarrows that come with gardening tools and two DIY paint a pot projects. All you have to do to win one of these prizes for your child is send an email to win@whatsoninourbackyard. with your name, suburb and contact details, with the subject heading ‘Kids in the garden’ by the closing date of 24th Feb. * Don’t forget to check out the range of kids DIY workshops available every weekend this summer at Bunnings, in our ‘Diary of Events’ pages which start on page 12.

COVER STORY Mellissa Rodgers, local business owner of Style It Curtains & Decor ...

... and most importantly, loving and inspirational mum to three beautiful children! Q. Tell us a bit about your background I am a single mum of three amazing children (William, Lana and Isla). We moved to Nelson Bay in October last year. The best move we ever made. We love it here. We used to come here on holidays as my mum and dad have a caravan at Fingal Bay Holiday Park, and then when my marriage fell apart, I needed a new/fresh the kids and I discussed it and made a family decision and here we are. I have worked in many positions over the years but funnily enough my very first job was putting hooks in curtains at my mum’s workplace, after school. This is where the fascination with fabric, colours, and curtains all began. Q. At what point did you decide to make a positive change to your life and start your own business & what/who inspired you? When my marriage was over, I needed to get back up, dust myself off and focus on what was truly important in my life. I decided it was time to take a risk and do something that I loved and that would work around being a single mum. I needed to be available if one of my children was ill, and I also didn’t want to miss out on the special things that they have at school, etc. And as a single mum I found that it was almost impossible to be 100% reliable to any employer. My mum and dad inspired and encouraged me to start my own business. My mum has been in this industry for close to 40 years and I have loved every minute of being involved in it. As I grew up it was always something that I was passionate about and decided to go for it!!! Q. Where do you go/who do you talk to when you need advice/feedback with regards to the business? Originally I had help and advice from the Business Enterprise Centre. They were very informative. I have my mum and dad too. I also have a very close friend in business and she has been a wealth of knowledge. Q. What do you do as a family in your spare time? The kids and I spend our time doing many things. During summer we go to the pool or beach almost every afternoon. However in winter, we watch DVDs, have little parties together and dance around the house. We just like to have fun. We also like to catch up with family and friends as often as we can. Q. How do you find ‘me’ time and how do you relax? I am lucky enough to have some free time occasionally and spend that catching up on the general day to day housekeeping etc. I also try and see my friends when I can. It is hard to find ‘me’ time but really important. I also go to the gym as often as I can. Again working this around the kids. This not only keeps me fit and healthy physically but also helps mentally and is a lot of fun. It’s a feel good thing to do. Q. How do you juggle running a business with being a single mum of 3? To be isn’t easy. But everyone who has a family

21 Dec - 5 Apr

regardless of if they are a single parent or two parent family, we all have things to juggle. Time management is the key for me and routine. The children and l have our little routine, and try really hard to stick to it as close as possible, then things flow. Also trying to remain laid back and not stress about the small stuff does make things easier too. I allocate specific hours for the business and focus on the children when they are home from School and Family Day Care. Q. Do you have family/friends close by who can help out? I have the most amazing mum and dad. They do as much as they can for me and my three children. They are fantastic grandparents as well and love my kids so very much. I also have my brother and sister and my very best friends that have been my constant support through everything. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. Q. What keeps you motivated? My main source of motivation is three children. I want to show them that no matter what hurdles you come across in life, if you remain positive, you can achieve absolutely anything. Q. What advice would you give to other mums who find themselves in a similar position? Never give up. Even when you feel like your world is crashing down around you......and you feel completely lost..... There is always light at the end of the tunnel. As hard as things get, turn the negatives into positives and realise you can do this. I would also suggest that getting help in these situations could be the best thing for others. I have been reading books that have helped me through my tough times and helped me remain focussed and helped me love me again. With regards to starting a business, do your research and don’t be scared to give things a go. Believe in yourself.

Getting Back To Basics by Jacqui Emanuel I have always strongly believed that what you put in has a big impact on your health and well being. When I had children the importance of sourcing fresh food became even more relevant to me. Once I started to read labels on food packaging it just confirmed that we need to get back to basics. In our family more often than not my husband and I cook from scratch and if we are using packaged “convenience” foods we select the products that are the closest to home cooked food, always free from artificial flavours, preservatives and junk fillers. We soon realised that cooking in this way is not difficult and can be just as quick with the right “mid week” recipes. We moved to “the Bay” about 3 and a half years ago and we absolutely love all that Port Stephens has to offer. The community atmosphere, the importance of family time and the location are something that we appreciate and cherish. The only thing we missed was the availability of fresh fruit and vegetables and the fine food ingredients that we like to cook with on weekends and special occasions ................ and this is where my passion began. I had a niggling desire to somehow bring this to the Bay. It was time to get back to some part-time work after taking time off to raise my young family. My background was in accounting and I started searching for some book-keeping work. My drive and motivation wasn’t there anymore and within four weeks I saw the ‘for sale’ advert for a fruit & vegetable store. This felt like the “thing” I was supposed to do, even though running a green grocer store was not part of any short term plans. After many nights of wondering what was I thinking and millions of ideas that I hope to put into place, we were now the proud, motivated owners of fruit & veg store. We very rarely shop in the big stores these days, just once a month for cleaning products, nappies and the like. We purchased an ice cream maker and now make delicious ice-cream regularly. We eat loads of fresh fruit and vegetables and support local businesses. Having the Good Food Distributors across the road is very convenient and we find we have little need to brave the crowds and find car parking in the local shopping centre. To sum up my food and store philosophy it would be – getting back to basics, real fresh, real food, real service, real value ....... and that is what I hope to achieve with The Bay Green Grocer.

With the weather heating up, many of us are planning a get away for a family holiday at the beach or we are taking the kids for a swim at the pool. As parents we often feel like summer has crept up on us and it doesn’t help that we are bombarded with messages about fitness, summer bodies and New Year’s resolutions. As the season gets busier we just don’t have the time to fit a healthier lifestyle into our schedule. With all the demands on parents these days it’s no wonder it’s not as easy as just heading into the local gym for a membership. By the time we have looked after the kids there is little time to look after ourselves. Casey Dunning is the Group Manager for Port Stephens YMCA centres and with two young children of his own knows all too well that fitness is often one of the goals of a parent that gets bumped to the back of the list. “We are well aware at the YMCA of the national childhood obesity trends and that families are spending less quality time together. This is why Port Stephens YMCA offers a unique Family Membership programme to make fitness and healthy lifestyles accessible to the whole family – in the pool as well as the gym,” said Mr Dunning. The family membership model offers parents a heavy discount so kids can use the pool while Mum and Dad work out in the gym. The cost of combined entry has been slashed by 40% to just $32 per week, as an incentive to get everyone out of the house. “What this means is the whole family can now use the fitness centre for a work out or group fitness classes, learn to swim; swim casually or attend gymnastics. This is a great way to keep Australian families together especially for those on a tight weekly budget,” said Mr Dunning. “The good news is that parents can achieve their fitness goals and reduce their stress at the same time, while youngsters are nearby under the watchful eye of trained professionals,” he said. Focussed on connecting local people and families to the community, the membership option defines family as ‘anyone living under the same roof,’ providing affordable access to quality health and fitness and aquatic services to even more local people. With crèche facilities also available at Raymond Terrace Leisure Centre, those with young children, especially mothers, can come in for a group fitness class and then grab a coffee with friends at the kiosk, for a couple of minutes well earned break. With over 30 group fitness classes per week, many within school hours, there are so many opportunities for stay at home parents to connect to their community, achieve their fitness goals and feel great. As a not-for-profit organisation the YMCA are focussed on the individual rather than the bottom line. With no lock in contracts or exit fees, the Y is here for you, your family and your community.

How Do We Learn? Why does it take so long to read and write? Why does it take 20 minutes to teach Monopoly, but years to teach reading and writing? Why does it only take upward of 100 hours to learn to drive a car? Why? Because reading and writing has a different learning system to learning to play Monopoly or drive a car. (5 years versus 3 months for learning to drive a car) Reading is by the rote learning system, (and we are not very good at it) whereas driving uses the concept learning system. We use very little rote learning to drive a car. The table below shows the difference:Learning to Drive Reading and (concept) Writing

between 5000-7000 hours to become a competent reader/ writer

How The Brain Thinks, Learns & Remembers. To teach well we need to understand how the brain learns. There are three discrete learning systems that integrate to create our overarching learning system:

knowledge creation via the 7% of brain cells that are known as neurons. 2. Building and automating conceptual frameworks of understanding via the interplay of brain cells called astrocytes (75% of brain cells). 3. Combining 1 and 2 above in different ways in order to be creative or innovative via brainwaves. More intelligent people have a lower ratio of neurons to astrocytes. Systems 1 and 2 above feed off each other. You need knowledge to form concepts. Concepts can be formed very quickly as they don’t rely very much on information. Rote learning doesn’t allow you to predict. For example you learnt via rote that 7x7=49 but this doesn’t allow you to predict what 8x7=? Learning by rote is not an efficient way of learning. Learning concepts (e.g. driving a car) is much more efficient. We learn them quickly and can transfer them to other places, and we can apply them to different contexts. This depends on the astrocytes and it is a much better way to learn than rote learning.

What Does This Mean For Schools? Understanding how the brain learns allows us to dramatically increase the efficiency and effectiveness of learning in the classroom. To create lifelong learners, we have to teach them how to learn, not just remembering. To become learners, you need to question everything. The purpose of school has fundamentally changed from the acquisition of knowledge to being able to apply concepts and ideas (which are underpinned by knowledge) creatively and innovatively. From an educational point of view, ‘passionate’ teachers elicit a greater hormonal response in their students which in turn results in the formation of greater numbers of astrocytes, allowing the students to learn more concepts.
