Welcome to the Spring Edition of the Experience Delta Magazine, Responsive Website & Mobile App. With the release of our Spring Edition of the Experience Delta magazine we mark the completion of our first full year of publication. As you can see from the endorsements of a selection of the wide array of comments we have received about the publication, it would appear we have made a significant contribution to the communities of Delta. Our goal is to continue to grow and expand the coverage that we provide by emphasizing the importance of our mobile app and responsive website. On behalf of the businesses that have chosen to support this initiative, we would ask that you take the time to contact businesses that you support locally and tell them how much you appreciate the Experience Delta program. Better yet, when you purchase something from a local business tell them you saw their ad in the magazine or ask them if they are aware of the Experience Delta initiative. By doing this you assist us to continue to publish this highly acclaimed suite of products.

Delta Chamber of Commerce

As winter turns to spring and the business community begins to ramp up there is also change at the Board level of the Chamber. I am wrapping up my two-year term as Chair and will be succeeded by Les Voros following the AGM in mid-March. My two years have been very exciting for the Chamber and it has been a great learning opportunity for me. I have had the privilege of leading two boards with very talented individuals all having a passion for Delta as the thread between us. There has been substantial growth in membership, continued support from our sponsors and renewed energy for our two main fundraising events – the golf tournament and the Hats Off Excellence Awards. During my time the board has been very fortunate to work with a solid staff. A big thank you to all of them for helping make my task as Chair very enjoyable; Louise Wechselberger, our Member Relations specialist, Samantha Cacnio in Communications and Events, Alison Reid who was responsible for making sure everyone got paid has moved on and was recently replaced by Heather Schmidt who appears to be fitting in very well. And last but not least, first Ian Tait and now Tom Awrey, the two Executive Directors whom I had the pleasure of working with and have been responsible for the continued success of the Chamber. As Past Chair I will remain on the Board and support Les as he continues to build on the solid foundation that makes the Delta Chamber of Commerce a strong voice for business in Delta. Those looking to plan a special event such as a wedding or family reunion can also search for rental information under “Looking for Space?” to secure the facilities they need. Popular wedding spots include Diefenbaker Park, North Delta Social Heart Plaza and the Kirkland House grounds. Add fun to a community special event with Delta’s Showstage, a portable stage trailer and sound system. North Delta’s Watershed Park, the municipality’s largest park, and the Spirit of Delta Millennium Trail, which runs from Ladner to Deas Island Regional Park, are two of Delta’s most popular walking and active transportation spaces. The 375-acre forested Watershed Park contains approximately 11km of

gravel trails used by walkers, runners, mountain bikers and horse riders. “The Meadow”, in the heart of the park, is a great spot to enjoy a picnic and take in breathtaking views of Mud Bay. Intermediate level bikers will enjoy the “Gravity Bowl” with its exhilarating twists and turns. The annual Watershed Park Fish Release is scheduled for April 23, 2017, at the old pump house area of the park and features family activities, crafts and ecological educational talks as buckets of salmon fry are released into the creek. Delta Watershed Park is easiest accessed on 64th Ave. just west of 120th St., and there are two main trail heads with ample parking. The scenic Millennium Trail starts at the west end of 60th Avenue, off River Road (Hwy 17A) and follows the dyke trail west towards Highway 99. Take your binoculars and enjoy a peaceful and

“wedding,” and after starting her business she received mixed reactions for pioneering such a new concept in the industry. Many felt her products were simply too nice to be called “budget”. Budget Blooms make shopping easy. Just send an email with a list of the items you need, including your colours, your venues, and photos for style and shape preferences. Photos are key, as they can communicate more than words. Easy-to-understand pricing eliminates sticker shock, and quotes are provided on the website for simple floral requests, matched to your photos and venues. They will also suggest double use at reception and ceremony wherever possible. Customers can change an order right up to the point they are asked to confirm it. Loyal clients value the business’ simple and straightforward approach. Being mindful of clients’ time is important. “We are not trying to please everyone. We know our customers, we know our products, and if it’s not a good fit, we will recommend someone else in the industry to best meet that customer’s needs.”

Make your first step a visit to their website to peruse their impressive gallery and request a quote. Find inspiration on their Instagram and Facebook sites. Unsure about sizes? View silk samples at their store. Jane’s work has been featured in Real Weddings and Wedding Bells magazines and Style Me Pretty’s website. Budget Blooms was voted Wedding Wire’s Customer Choice award winner in 2014 and 2015.

magine this: There’s no time to waste. There’s a luxury car show and you must get a $2.1 million Bugatti from the airport to Vancouver as soon as possible. Who do you call? If you are like many companies that need to expedite cargo at a moment’s notice, you call JT Hotshotting. Founded in 2006 by Harley Anfinson, the hot shot trucking company has grown its fleet from one truck and a trailer to 11 trucks and 14 trailers - from open and enclosed car haulers, boat and sailboat trailers, all sizes of flat deck trailers and dry vans - in less than a decade. The company can haul anything (except livestock), anywhere, across North America at any time of the day. “We once received a late-night call to pick up a human lung from the airport

for delivery to Vancouver General Hospital,” says Harley. According to Justin Anfinson, co-owner with his father Harley, hot shot trucking came to being during the 1960’s and 1970’s, and played a critical role in developing the Alberta oil sands. “This type of service was geared

towards supplying the oilfields quicker and cheaper than a traditional line haul highway tractor,” he explains. “Shipments were never held up due to consolidation but rather dispatched immediately on dedicated trucks.” The term “Hot shots” literally means HOT as in Now and SHOT as in a Straight Run and get time-sensitive loads to their

destination on time. What makes JT Hotshotting stand above the crowd is that they dispatch the right truck or truck and trailer that best suits a client’s specific needs within minutes of receiving an order. The client receives an update from dispatch every 2 – 3 hours as to location of shipment with an ETA each time. This allows the mill, mine, plant time to have their staff on site to install the required part as soon as it arrives. Justin recalls a phone call from Zellstoff Celgar in Castlegar. “If they hadn’t received the electrical part they needed that day, it would have cost the mill $400,000 a day to shut down that section of the mill.”

Over the years, JT Hotshotting started to offer valueadded services, such as auto transport, boat transport and RV transport. “We’ve expanded the business over the years because the ideology of Hot Shot Trucking can be applied in those services as well,” says Justin. “If we do not deliver within the time frame promised, the customer does not pay.” JT Hotshotting has built its reputation as a company that exceeds expectations - Let them exceed yours. 7403 Wilson Avenue, Delta, BC V4G 1E5 604-218-0464 or 1-877-417-2798 info@jthotshotting.com jthotshotting.com Mon to Sun Noon – 11:59pm

here are several reasons why parents choose to send their child to an independent school. However, one thing is certain: many parents feel that a private-school education offers children the necessary skills needed to navigate the fast, ever-changing world we live in today. Experience Delta Winter 2016 Edition Page 16, Winemaking in Delta Article – Grapes 4 U Editing a 48 page magazine includes many exacting tasks some of which need to be completed under extreme pressure due to externally imposed deadlines and related extraneous circumstances. Sometimes, despite the greatest effort and intentions, an error is overlooked that should seem most simple to correct with appropriate proof reading. This situation occurred in our Winter edition and as a result of our oversight we inadvertently and incorrectly mixed up the names of the owners of Grapes 4U and

Ladner Chocolates, two of our most loyal and valued clients. The photograph on the left clearly identifies that Don Stewart is the owner of Grapes 4U and his associate Laurence Catterall is the owner of Ladner Artisan Chocolates. We are so sorry that this situation occurred and wanted to publicly apologize to Don and Laurence for our oversight. Swing by and check out their wonderful, local businesses at 5101 Ladner Trunk Road - previously occupied by Glacier Beer & Wine.

The calm

before the storm

“Y

OU’RE not a Capitalist.” The words rang out across the kitchen table, breaking the silence and nervous ticking of an old clock. “You’re a walking contradiction. How can you support globalism, the fundamentals of entrepreneurialism, and still be in favour of government intervention on real-estate pricing?” To this day these words from my mentor still echo in my head. Over two years ago on a late summer evening, a conversation about the affordability of housing and real estate between me and my mentor had become the subject of a heated debate. Now, looking back, he was right to claim that at the time I was being narrow-minded and not seeing the bigger picture. Fast forward to today and sure, government intervention has helped stem some of the craziest real estate runs that BC has ever seen - but it’s temporary; the floodgates will burst. 2016 was the year of intervention and the realization of sobering results in Vancouver and surrounding municipalities. A ‘wild west’ of sorts for the last few years, construction has boomed, empires were created and business practices ran unchecked in a loosely unregulated environment. This summer the sector woke up to a bad hangover. The provincial government stepped in, imposing the 15% foreign buyers’ tax, a re-haul of real estate practices and a vacancy tax starting in 2017 within the city of Vancouver. Not to mention that the CRA has spread a blanket across the Lower Mainland and is targeting any business practices remotely tied to real estate. I am a firm believer that while government initiatives and regulatory control will slow growth for a brief moment, it shall be fleeting, as regulation cannot stop demand. Take for example

that the 15% foreign buyers’ tax is on residential real estate only; it does not apply to commercial nor to the non-residential component of mixeduse properties. Talking to individuals on the front lines in condo-presales, supply is limited as condos are flying off the shelves like hotcakes. Despite recent restrictions in China on outflowing capital, foreign monies will still come into Vancouver and the surrounding cities as a safe haven to invest and foster growth. With the ascendancy of president-elect Donald Trump, the coming months will show us a possible influx of U.S. immigration and businesses, and indirectly immigration from global sources may increase as the White House adopts a tougher stance south of the border. A greater influx of both refugees and new immigrants under the Trudeau administration is also fueling demand in Surrey. BC Stats has our net inflow population projection at a conservative 52,000 new individuals for 2017. Contrary to public opinion, even though CRA is specifically targeting construction and real estate, this will not slow down the need for supply. Take into consideration that earlier this week Business in Vancouver wrote that 15,000 construction jobs will be needed to be filled in 2017 due to the sector’s growth. With BC currently looking more attractive than Alberta, we are also seeing an internal migration of workers and skilled labour from the oilfields coming back home. Of course, as always there are two sides to the coin, but as was candidly pointed out to me two years ago, we live in one of the most desirable places in the world. The 2010 Olympics put us on the map; it’s just a matter of time before our population exponentially multiplies. We can implement all the regulations and red tape we want, but we have to face reality: this is just the calm before the storm.

pening her Tsawwassen gardens for charity wasn’t something Wendy had thought of. However, when a member of the South Delta Garden Club drove by her stunning front garden and asked if she’d be interested, Wendy agreed. “I thought it could be a really appealing thing to do and it supports great causes, such as the Healing Garden at Delta Hospital,” she says. The seasoned gardener has spent years tending to her front and back gardens. “The front yard is a large perennial bed bursting with peonies, foxgloves, dahlias and many other colourful flowers,” she adds. “The back is a shaded garden with hidden pathways, tuckedaway patios and lots of very interesting plants.” The Garden Tour 2017 – Sunday, June 25th – 10 am to 4 pm Michelle Wilson, chair of the South Delta Garden Tour, is credited with bringing the Garden Tour 2017 back to life after a 12-year hiatus. “I used to go on the tours before I was a member of the club and always loved going through some of Delta’s most beautiful gardens,” says Michelle. “It ended because the Club decided to concentrate on

their annual plant sales.” Michelle remembers how gardeners would flock from all over the Lower Mainland to the tour, seeking inspiration, asking owners’ advice or just to enjoy stunning displays, some of which are manicured while others are woodsy. 2017 isn’t only the year the tour resurrected; it also marks the 65th anniversary of the South

rom business lunches and family dinners to birthdays and romantic date nights, Primerose Mediterranean Restaurant has delighted guests for generations with its flavourful, truly authentic Greek fare. When the business was sold in December 2015 the torch was passed to Sia and Maria Adjudani and their young daughter Georgia, a family of passionate restaurateurs with a wealth of service experience. The Adjudanis had previously owned and operated Opa Taverna in New Westminster, but sold the business when Maria was expecting their daughter. The Primerose opportunity attracted the North Delta couple, who welcomed the chance to

work in their community. Drawing on family recipes direct from Oropos, Greece, a small town north of Athens, as well as some tasty new additions from Maria’s own family, the new owners take pride in creating a warm and welcoming ambiance where special memories are made. While the Primerose name remains, the Adjudanis have revamped everything else to truly make the restaurant their own. “All marinades, sauces, and soups are made from scratch, and that’s important to us,” explains Sia. Signature dishes that keep guests coming back include their famous Kleftico (roast lamb), featuring the highest quality lamb marinated in a tantalizing tomato sauce, and Maria’s homemade

Tilbury Industrial Park

Now with a focus on retail

A

long the banks of the mighty Fraser River is where you will find Tilbury Industrial Park. Considered a hidden jewel, Tilbury is a modern and high-growth industrial park with more than 750 businesses employing over 8,000 people. The companies based here offer a wide selection of products and services, ranging from

aerospace and high-tech to manufacturing and distribution. But it wasn’t always the case. In 1973, with a growing demand for more industrial land, more than 400 acres were taken out of the ALR to construct the park. Back then, Tilbury was pretty much inhabited by farmers and fishermen. “At the time, there wasn’t

even a thru road,” says Delta City Mayor Lois Jackson. “It was the late Mayor Tom Goode’s vision to develop Tilbury Park.” It took a few years to service such a large area. In November 1977, Phase 1 of Tilbury Industrial Park officially opened. Tilbury is one of two of Canada’s larger industrial parks, the other being Annacis Island, and both are located along the south arm of the Fraser River. Combined, they represent more than $4.6 billion in annual business – more than the Saint Lawrence Seaway. Back in 2014, Mayor Jackson was credited for revitalizing Tilbury Industrial Park and capping landfills in the area in order to encourage commercial and retail tenants. Today Tilbury has attracted companies such as: Tower Fitness and

Speedpro Signs, Amazon, Bridgeview Marine, Pacific Coast Doors, Fountain Tire, and the newest kid on the block, Four Winds Brewing Company. Several restaurants enhance the neighbourhood, including the Tilbury Restaurant and Café, the Sandwich Tree, Monte Cristo Bakery, and Tilbury Sports Grill. Jackson says there is much interest due to location. One of Tilbury’s biggest advantages is its proximity to most of the Lower Mainland, Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, Deltaport Container Terminal, the Fraser Valley and the US Border. In addition the four-lane South Fraser Perimeter Road makes it even easier to access the area. If you’ve not been already Tilbury Industrial Park is well worth a visit

Brockmann’s Chocolates Tilbury is where Brockmann’s Chocolates chose to set up shop in 2008, attracted to the “business-friendly atmosphere Delta offers.” Kathrin Brockmann, Brockmann’s Chocolates’ CEO, says: “Our business was growing so quickly and we couldn’t expand in our Richmond location.” In 1934 Kathrin’s grandfather Willibald ‘Willy’ Brockmann, a master confectioner trained in Cologne, Germany, founded Conditerei Café Brockmann, a small confectionary shop in Munich. Specializing in pastries, cakes, and handmade truffles, Brockmann’s soon became a landmark. It wasn’t long before his son Norbert Brockmann joined the family business. In 1967 he also trained to become a master confectioner. Nearly 20 years later, Norbert and his wife Marianne immigrated to Canada and opened Brockmann’s Tea Room in Vancouver. “My parents were way ahead of the times when they opened the tea room in Kerrisdale … it closed a year later,” she adds. “My father decided to refocus his energies on what he did best, handcrafted chocolates.” Following in her grandfather’s and her father’s footsteps, Kathrin also trained as a chocolatier in Germany. From its humble beginnings as the Brockmann’s Tea Room

in Kerrisdale, Brockmann’s Chocolates has grown into a major player in the industry. The family-run business sells its highquality Chocolates Truffini and Crunchetti brands throughout British Columbia, including Save-On Foods, Urban Fare and Thrifty Foods, and in major retailers across North America. “When dad started here back in the late 1980s, we had a handful of employees … five or six,” she says. “Today we employ between 50 and 60.” Kathrin clearly recalls her earliest memories of working in the factory. “I was five or six and I was helping to make truffles for some of Vancouver’s top hotels,” she says. “I can still remember those smells and eating a lot of chocolate.” As a third-generation chocolatier, Kathrin is still guided by those principles that her grandfather founded the company on: his commitment to using only the most natural and freshest ingredients of the highest quality. “In our Crunchetti, and in our signature line of Truffini, we use Barry Callebaut premium chocolate,” she explains. Just like the Belgians and the Swiss, Brockmann’s Chocolates has always appreciated the alchemy of turning cocoa into irresistible confections. “I love the innovation … there are lots of players out there, chocolatiers who are thinking outside the box to create unique and different chocolate flavours,” Kathrin enthuses. “That’s what we strive to do at Brockmann’s.”
