Tips for SAVVY advertisers ◆ Be consistent

When you’ve got a good ad, stick with it. Many advertisers keep the same ad from one issue to the next. Consistency pays off.

◆ Be frequent

For a one-time ad to work, it probably needs to be big and bold – and possibly in color. So instead of a big ad in one issue, go with a series of smaller ads in consecutive issues. Repetition works! Many advertisers instruct us: “Just keep running my ad until I tell you to stop.”

◆ Go consecutive! Save 10% with two consecutive ads, 15% with four.

 Welcome to What’s On

◆ Publication Profile

What’s On is a community calendar in a newspaper format – a NewsCalendar of coming events and activities. Unlike most newspapers, What’s On does not report on things past. It does not present a point of view, advocate a position, or debate the issues. It does not contain the cartoons, recipes, comics, horoscopes, puzzles, and so on that weeklies often use to fill space. Rather, What’s On focuses on the future, providing detailed, comprehensive, and accurate information about coming events and activities in the communities it serves. What’s On Haddonfield was launched in 1991. What’s On Collingswood followed in 2002.

◆ Snappy Format Larger than a magazine but smaller than a typical weekly newspaper – 13.5 inches x 10.5 – What’s On is printed on 30lb newsprint, saddle-stitched and trimmed. A typical issue has 24 to 48 pages.

• First settled in 1682, Haddonfield is an affluent, attractive, and historic community located about ten miles from Philadelphia (east, across the Delaware River). It has been named “Best Place to Live in the Delaware Valley” several times by Philadelphia Magazine. • A small community with an authentic main street, Haddon Heights has been designated a “Classic Town” by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission. • Collingswood has attracted considerable attention in recent years related to the revival of its downtown and its emergence as a dining and entertainment destination. • Haddon Township, the only town of the four that permits the sale of alcohol, is undergoing a revival of its own. It is home to a number of upscale restaurants and a wide variety of retail and service businesses.

 What’s On Advertising Basics

◆ Ads that We Prepare

◆ Ad Sizes

Unlike some publishers, we do not charge extra to prepare ads on your behalf. The costs of preparation – writing the copy, designing the layout, and providing a proof – are included in the cost of the ad. After we prepare your ad we will show you a proof. We will bring it to you or send it by fax, mail, or e-mail. Or you can come to our office (6 Haddon Avenue S, Haddonfield). We will ask you to sign and return the proof to indicate your approval of the copy, layout, publication/s, insertion date/s, and cost.

Most newspapers use “column inches” to describe the sizes of their ads. (In those papers, “two by three” means 2 columns wide and 3 inches high.) What’s On is different. We use a modular grid that’s 5 units wide and 5 units high. In What’s On, “two by three” means 2 units wide by 3 ◆ Ads that You Prepare units high. A 2 x 3 ad is 3.5 We are usually delighted to receive “good to go” or “press- inches wide, 7 inches high. ready” material from advertisers and their agencies. We prefer 300dpi PDFs created with Acrobat on Macs. We will accept 300dpi JPEG files, Photoshop files (PSD with all type rasterized), or Illustrator files (AI or EPS with all type converted to outlines). 2x3 We will not accept files created in Word or Publisher. Color and grayscale images: 300dpi. Black & white images: 1 600dpi. Color images: CMYK. x Please e-mail files to: ads@gumnutgroup.com.

E-mail ads@gumnutgroup.com (attention: Art Department) or call 856-428-3399 and ask for Jenn.

◆ Business Directory The last few pages of each What’s On carry directory listings for a wide variety of businesses. The same Business Directory runs in both publications. (Sorry, you can’t be in just one.) For details, see the “Business Directory” page in this booklet.

◆ Preprinted Inserts The cost for a single 20# sheet up to 8.5" x 11" is $50 per 1,000 mailed. Haddonfield/Haddon Heights: 5,000 = $250. Collingswood/Haddon Township: 5,000 = $250. Both papers: 10,000 = $500. Got a multi-page insert or an “onsert” (placed on top of What’s On, in a poly bag)? Call for details and pricing. Inserts must be delivered to our printer no later than 7 days prior to publication date, and paid for in advance.

◆ Classified Ads We accept private-party ads in classifications such as Help Wanted, Help Available, Items for Sale, Real Estate for Sale (by individuals), Real Estate for Rent, etc. Each classified ad is placed in a 1-unit box – 1.6825" wide x 2.25" high – with its own header. Classified ads cost $25 for about 25 words. We publish Yard Sale ads and Lost & Found ads without charge for residents of communities served by What’s On. For others, the cost is $10.

◆ Ad Dimensions

Size Wide 1 x 2 1.6825" 1 x 3 1 x 4 1 x 5

2.25" 4.625" 7.0" 9.375" 11.75"

Our minimum ad size is 2 units – 2 x 1 or 1 x 2. This box is the size of a 2 x 1 ad – 3.5 inches wide x 2.25 inches high – about the size of a business card. A full page is 25 units – 5 x 5 – 8.9375 inches wide x 11.75 inches high. The "Ad Dimensions" box above is the size of a 1 x 2 ad.

A 2-unit ad costs $77. When you run the same ad in two consecutive issues, the price drops to $69 for each. Run in four issues and the price for each drops to $65 – a 15% discount. For 12? Just $58. See the next page for details.

◆ Paying for Ads, Inserts, Listings We expect new advertisers to pay in advance and established advertisers to pay within 7 days of invoice date. Our rates are net and non-commissionable to agencies. We accept cash, checks, money orders, Visa, MasterCard, and electronic payments. We charge $25 when checks are returned unpaid. We trade with members of Corporate Barter Network, Itex, and Barter Depot on a 100% reciprocal barter basis. Advertisers who have questions about ad rates, invoices, and payments should contact their Sales Representative. Rates are reviewed annually, in August.

◆ Format

There is a 5-line minimum for billing purposes, but your listing can be longer or shorter. If your business name carries over to a second line, you will not be charged for that line. There are about 30 characters and spaces per line. If we do not have an appropriate category for your business, we will create a new category. We generally follow the Yellow Pages categories.
