Curing childhood cancer, one cup at a time
When Alexandra “Alex” Scott decided to erect a lemonade stand in the frontyard of her Wynnewood PA home in 2000, she visited her local Superfresh with her mother to purchase lemonade and cups. After Alex and her mom explained to the manager that her cart was loaded with supplies for her lemonade stand, which she was holding to raise money to help kids with cancer, the manager donated the supplies. Inspired by Alex’s story, and emboldened by the loss of a co-worker’s son to neuroblastoma in 2005, employees at Westmont’s Superfresh are gearing up to host their fifth annual Customer Appreciation Day and Chinese Auction to benefit the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. The extravaganza will be held on Sat Apr 2, between 10am and 2pm. The store is located at 650 Cuthbert Blvd E, Westmont. Be sure to wear your lucky socks! Tickets will be sold in batches of 18 for $5. More than 40 filled baskets, gift cards, and gift certificates will be awarded to lucky winners. Souper bowls!
The students at Haddon Township High School will host their third Empty Bowls Charity Dinner on Fri Apr 1, from 5:30 to 8pm, in the school cafeteria. During this event, attendees will enjoy a meal of soup and bread. The soup will be served in handmade ceramic bowls. Following the meal, guests will be invited to take their bowls home to remind them of the bowls that remain empty throughout the world. The first two Empty Bowls Charity Dinners, held in 2007 and 2009, raised over $9,000 for the Food Bank of South Jersey. They also helped raise awareness of the poverty and hunger which exists in South Jersey. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults and can be purchased at the door.
