SON OF THE POPULA JUST IN TIME FOR emember when the last click that you wanted to be associated with in high school were the losers and nerds? Well these days, thanks to hit shows like GLEE on FOX, we are all embracing our inner square and making it chic to be a geek. Actor, Chris Colfer knows what it was like to go through school being taunted and ridiculed for just being himself. Colfer is openly gay and has shared with the media that his parents were accepting of him from the first, but he was frequently bullied at school by his peers. So he can completely sympathize with the character of Kurt Hummel that he portrays on GLEE. Before landing the role of Kurt, he originally auditioned for the role of Artie with the song Mr. Cellophane from the musical Chicago, but Kevin McHale was selected for the role. However, the casting directors were so impressed by Colfer that they wrote the part of Kurt into the show as a vehicle for him. Colfer commented on his casting,"It's good to have something positive, especially for kids in small towns, like myself, who need a little pick-me-up." Kurt Hummel has without a doubt gone on to become an audience favorite and the actor has recently been nominated for an EMMY for supporting actor. In an interview, Colfer explained that his character's name is taken from The Sound of Music's Kurt von Trapp (whom he once played in a production of the musical), and the popular German Hummel figurines. Colfer, continues explaining the origination of his

So the next thing I know the role is named for that early experience, and Hummel because I reminded him of the Hummel figurines with rosy colored cheeks." Colfer continues that his character Kurt "puts on a very confident, 'I'M BETTER THAN YOU' persona, but underneath it all he's the same anxious and scared teen everyone is/was at some point. In later episodes, he goes through an identity crisis, accepting and finding acceptance for who he is. He's a tough guy in designer clothes." On a memorable episode of GLEE’s first season, Kurt performs Defying Gravity from Wicked. Murphy selected the song after Colfer relayed a story from his own high school days, whereby his drama teacher refused to let him sing it because of his gender. The song was later released alongside his castmates

here would be no such thing as a JOCK, if it wasn't a GEEK for them to bully around and secretly lust over! Every JOCK needs a GEEK to suppress tier homoerotic fantasies by teasing and giving wedgies to them. All of us have a GEEK who lives inside ourselves cowering in a corner. For some of us, this might be even harder to admit then actually coming out of the closet. I for one, consider myself a CLOSETED COMIC BOOK DORK. I'm using this article to officially admit it to everyone and step out of the GEEK CLOSET once and for all. Now this does not mean that GEEKS can't be sexy. Quite the opposite. This month, smarten up your summer wardrobe by mixing in some preppy styles. Take pride in your inner GEEK and jump aboard this GEEK CHIC school bus! The Summer/Fall runway was awash this season with a boyish, bookish style. Below illustrated are crucial element to your GEEK look! The more patterns that clash (with a general color palette and nuetrals) the better! Finish it off with non-prescription HR glasses that say,"I KNOW fashion, but hey, I enjoy Calculus too." And don't forget, the perfect accessory to this GEEK CHIC look is a big, beefy JOCK by your side. Have a great back to school boys!
Friend Stephen Bray, a musician in her band, wrote her first hit, Everybody, and Madonna used her brash business style to get the recordings to New York music producer Mark Kamins. Kamins then helped Madonna score a record deal with Sire Records. Everybody hit number one on the dance charts in 1982. Using the success of the song as leverage, Madonna convinced Sire to produce the full-length album, Madonna, in 1983. The album was a slow but steady success, and included the hit singles Borderline, Lucky Star and Holiday. Soon, girls all over the country were imitating Madonna's distinct sense of fashion, which included fishnet stockings, lace lingerie, fingerless gloves and large crucifix necklaces. The song Holiday also earned the singer an appearance on Dick Clark's American Bandstand in 1984. During her interview on the show, she told Clark that her main ambition was "to rule the world." And, boy is she making good on that promise. This intensity and determination was apparent in her 1985 follow-up album, Like a Virgin, which hit #1 on the Billboard Charts and went platinum within a month. She also starred in her first mainstream feature film, Desperately Seeking Susan in 1985, and performed the soundtrack's single, Into the Groove, which hit #1 on the U.S. dance charts. Her next single Crazy for You, in which she performed in the film Vision Quest, also becoming another #1 hit. She then started her first music tour, The Virgin Tour and watched 17 consecutive songs climb into the Top 10 on the Billboard Charts. The rest is, as they say “her-story”. Her professional life continued to boom. In January 2008 she was named the world's wealthiest female musician by Forbes Magazine, with estimated earnings of more than $72 million in the last year alone. Madonna earned much of this income from her H&M clothing line; a deal with NBC to air concert footage; and her
Confessions tour—the highest-grossing tour for a female artist to date. She also continue to sing, act and manage a number of business interests, splitting her time between the U.K. and the U.S. She was the writer and executive producer of I Am Because We Are, a documentary about the lives of Malawi's AIDS orphans, and the arthouse film, Filth and Wisdom. Her album Hard Candy was released in April of the same year and her Sticky & Sweet tour became her first major venture with concert promoter LIVE Nation. In 2009, she released a third greatest hits album, Celebration, which became Madonna's eleventh #1 album in the U.K. With the release of the record, Madonna tied with Elvis Presley as the solo act with most #1 albums in the U.K. She is currently planning the release of another live album and a new film project, both set for 2010. Those of us that are fans will be waiting with baited breath until we see what the Material Girl has in store for us next. Finally, many years ago in the early 90’s when living in Miami, I was invited to the White Party charity event held at the Vizcaya Palace in Coral Gables every year for AIDS Research. Madonna showed up with local partygirl Ingrid Casares. She was wearing black and sucking on a cherry flavored Blow-POP. She scanned the room, said a few words to Ingrid and then they left. I remember thinking,”How can anyone that short be so powerful and mesmerizing.” Since then she has become a “gentler-softermore-british Madonna. I’ve met many celebrities since then and the one thing they all have in common is that they all are just everyday people with extraordinary jobs. But, I’m sure if ever given the opportunity to chat it up with the BIG M, I’ll manage to sound like a total idiot. Afterall - SHE’S FREAKIN’ MADONNA! And I say,”LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!”
