Welcome to the August edition of the What’s Good To Do newsletter Summertime is finally here and the kids are on their long school holidays. While you may be looking for things to do to keep the children occupied they can be quite costly especially 6 weeks worth so check out your local museums that may be free or very low cost, if you live or near London the National History Museum and Science Museum are great fun and FREE. You can also check out websites such as www.twinkl.co.uk with lots of activities, games and learning resources to keep their minds occupied. It is said that a child can lose a couple of months worth of knowledge over the summer holidays so as well as the fun stuff try to keep their brains in great working order while still having a great time - maybe visit your local library and checkout some great children’s books, great fun and the kids can immerse themselves in great stories to spark their imagination and they are also practising their reading and word skills; learning without them knowing. You can also let them help in the kitchen - this is another great way to keep their brains active as by following recipes they are practising reading, maths and thinking skills again all without them thinking they are in a learning environment. As well as mental stimulation they also need psychical activities to keep them fit, the easiest and cheapest way of doing this is playing with them in the garden or taking them to the park. Bring a packed lunch and enjoy some quality family time with them. If decide to take them out to one of the country’s many theme park’s here are some simple tips to keep the cost down: - Book your tickets online - you can save up to 20% off the gate price - Arrive as early as you can to beat the queues and try to do the most popular rides first - Take a packed lunch, there are generally plenty of eating areas - Leave the water rides until last and take a change of clothes, there is nothing worse than walking around soaking wet all day - and make sure you apply sun cream throughout the day, it can get hotter than you think! What’s Good To Do would like to say hello and a very big welcome to Hauck UK - one of the market leaders in the area of strollers and baby accessories. Enjoy the Summer!

How to survive the Summer heatwave. Written by David Savage We are currently experiencing a heatwave with temperatures in excess of 30° but by being sensible you can avoid getting ill from the effects of the sun and enjoy the summer. - Stay hydrated: drink plenty of water even you are not thirsty as you are already dehydrated by this stage. Try not to drink very cold water as this may cause stomach cramps. Avoid drinks with alcohol, caffeine and sugar – they cause loss of fluids and will dehydrate you even more.

- Dress appropriately: wear loose-fitting and light clothing and wear a hat and sunglasses when out in the sun. Illness related to heat are preventable by drinking plenty of water and staying cool, while this is common sense the sight of the sun seems to make us forgot. Signs on heat stroke are: Headache Rapid pulse Lack of sweat Red hot dry skin Dizziness, nausea Feeling tired or weak Over 103°F body temp Or losing consciousness If you think you or someone may have signs of heat stroke and not heat exhaustion (heat exhaustion would involve heavy sweating where heat stroke has no sweat) then get to a cool place and drink plenty of fluids. If the symptoms don’t go away or get worse then seek medical advice.

- Wear plenty of suncream: make sure when you are going out Stay safe this summer and enjoy the sunshine without getting to apply plenty of suncream (SPF 15 or higher) on yourself and ill. your children (I am guilty or NOT doing this and always suffer for it). Sunburn is not a good look! The “healthy tan” is a myth and can cause problems with aging skin and skin cancers. If you do get sunburnt then apply after sun or Aloe Vera to ease the pain. - Shield your eyes: protect your eyes with UV protection sunglasses. - Watch your diet: by eating healthier food such as fresh fruit, salads and lean protein you can keep your energy levels up when junk foods will destroy them. - Relax: make sure you find time to sit down and relax If you have an idea for an article or maybe you have written a suitable article that you would like to see here please email: inbetween all the fun summer activities you may do with the david@whatsgoodtodo.com children during the school holidays. Excess heat and overexertion will dehydrate you very quickly risking heat stroke.
