4 WHAT'S DOING IN WATERBURY

After speaking with someone who recently moved into Waterbury and was trying to adjust to the New England weather, I wistfully recalled our first few years here when the snow just never seemed to stop! While so far we seemed to have been spared from too much of the white stuff, contending with so many months of plummeting temperatures can definitely be challenging. That’s why we are so happy to feature a cover photo, courtesy of Rivka Gross Photography, which reflects a child’s innocent excitement and thrill over a snowstorm. Somehow children are able to appreciate the beauty of it all – the difficult driving conditions, frozen windshields and icy sidewalks not withstanding. Just another one of the many beautiful lessons we can learn from our precious children! Wishing you a wonderful and safe rest of the winter. And remember… spring is just around the corner!

COMMUNITY COMMENTARY Compiled by Tehilla Hoberman & Leah Schutz

When I saw a deer on the way to Blue Ridge my 5-year-old said, “Ma, do you know what a reindeer is?” She continued, “A reindeer loves to be outside in the rain… they’re waterproof! That’s why they’re called reindeer! "

I was in my classroom trying to locate something on the computer and I was having trouble finding it. One of the girls piped up, "It's probably on your flashlight." I bought new pajamas for my daughter that had porcupines on it. She didn’t want to wear them because the animals have ‘booboos’.

My 4-year-old came inside from playing in the snow and said, "My pinky feels like it went to the dentsit and they did something to it." When winter vacation came around, my kids were all very excited to be sleeping away for a night at a hotel nearby. All week long my 3-year-old kept asking, "when are we going to ho ‘n’ tel?" I guess she had show ‘n’ tell on her mind and couldn’t get the word right! When something breaks, we sometimes tell our 2-year-old daughter that we’ll buy a new one from the store. One day, I lost a piece of jewelry and my daughter saw I was upset. So she said, 'We're gonna get another one from the store. It's okay.'

I had to ask my 5-year-old daughter, a few times, to please pick up her dirty laundry from the floor and put it into the hamper. When I gently reminded her that it was still on the floor she answered, “You’re practically begging me to be the mother!”

I found two kindergartners wandering in the hallway at school one day and I asked them where they were going. One of the girls pointed to her friend and said proudly, “Her tooth hurts, I’m taking her to the dentist.”

Share a humorous or unique experience with us for our next issue. Text: 203-233-3417 email: whatsdoingwtby@gmail.com WHAT'S DOING IN WATERBURY 29

NVWHS

Naugatuck Valley Women’s Health Specialists

NAUGATUCK VALLEY WOMEN’S HEALTH SPECIALISTS is an obstetrics and gynecology group with offices in Waterbury and Middlebury, CT. Serving the greater Waterbury area since 1984, our office is known for its warm and personal environment, where every patient is treated with the greatest respect and consideration. Our team consists of five dedicated doctors, an experienced certified nurse midwife and PA. We pride ourselves in building strong relationships with patients and providing the most up-to-date, quality health care in gynecology and obstetrics. We are affiliated with Saint Mary’s Hospital, where we perform state-of-the-art surgeries and deliver babies. Saint Mary’s Hospital is also home of The BirthPlace – the only in-hospital birth center in Connecticut – and it is open to women with low-risk pregnancies who desire the most natural childbirth experience possible while having all the services necessary to respond to any emergency situation. We believe that a number of factors help to make our practice unique: ♦ At NVWHS, we take a family-centered, holistic approach to healthcare. As part of our commitment to prevention, we have a clinical nutritionist in our office who will work with our patients on diet and lifestyle modification and targeted nutritional supplementation. ♦ In recognition of our patients’ busy schedules, we offer early morning, late evening, and Saturday appointments.

♦ All of our physicians are adept in advanced minimally invasive surgery. ♦ Our group has always been at the forefront in supporting women who wish to attempt a VBAC. Saint Mary’s Hospital leads the state in the rate of successful VBACs. ♦ Over the last 29 years we have delivered over 30% of the babies born in Waterbury. ♦ Our physicians and staff welcome women with high-risk pregnancies. Our distinctive management of high-risk pregnancies in conjunction with the specialists at Yale University and the University of CT Health Center has a proven record of excellent outcomes. In addition, the neonatal intensive care nursery at Saint Mary’s Hospital allows many mothers and babies to receive superior care locally where many hospitals must transfer the mother or baby to another facility because of lack of specialized staff and equipment. ♦ Our group is versed in the unique needs of our Orthodox Jewish patients. We believe the Orthodox Jewish community has added a wonderful dimension to the character of Waterbury. We relish the continued growth of the Orthodox Jewish community and look forward to continuing to provide care to orthodox women. Please visit our website at nvwhs.com to learn more about women’s health issues and preventive care and see the faces that make up NVWHS. To make an appointment, please call our office at (203) 709-8700. We look forward to caring for you!

The Waterbury Police Department Community Relations Division intends to provide vital and resourceful information to the community. The police department looks forward to a continued partnership with the community and we strongly encourage the residents to contact us with any suggestions or topics to discuss in the next issue.

QUALITY-OF-LIFE IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD In this installment I would like to focus my reporting on quality-of-life issues within a neighborhood. These are important to focus on just as much as what people would agree are major problems. These quality-of-life issues range from blighted properties, unregistered motor vehicles and abandoned motor vehicles. During the winter months it can be a little more difficult to see everyday blight, but the snow provides answers on abandoned or inoperable vehicles on the road that are covered in snow for an extended period of time. You can report any of these issues to us at the Waterbury Police Departments Community Relations Division at 203-574-6962 or communityrelations@wtbypd.org so we can address those issues within the neighborhoods. Please remember to report any crimes or suspicious activity Officer Matt Lemos immediately to 911 or 203-574-6911 for non-emergencies. 203-574-6962 Ext. 4319 All reporting is important to the overall well-being of our mlemos@wtbypd.org communities. have to imagine. We have seen it and can see it all around ourselves. It just requires some focus, because otherwise the static is very strong. Rav Yonason Eibeshitz z”tzl, in his Ya’aros Devash, writes that our Geulah on Purim elevated us above even the lofty potential we absorbed at Yetziyas Mitzrayim. When Hashem took us out of Egypt, we saw the Divine revealed in many great miracles. On Purim, however, we learned to detect Hashem’s Providence even without open miracles, while the world appears to be simply running its course. Every step plausible;

though not predictable. Only at the end can we gaze back, over the course of everything that transpired, and discern that this whole course of events hardly seems plausible at all. And surprisingly then, we see that it is predictable, though only in its end. (At least it should be to us, by now.) When we step, in our minds, outside of time, we can recognize hidden miracles. And we can use that vision to motivate us, refocusing ourselves to dive back into the slowly progressing stream of our lives, which Hashem designed, especially for us, as the only place where it is possible for us to grow. A TRIBUTE TO

Dr. Zalman Magid z"l A Life of Torah BY RABBI MOSHE DON KESTENBAUM

I believe I was zoche to be one of the first people to greet Dr. Magid when he walked through the Yeshiva doors over a decade ago. I was confused; why was an older gentleman, almost double everyone's age, moving to Waterbury? The answer – he wanted to be near a Yeshiva. Soon enough, I started learning Daf Yomi with him each day – together with R’ Shaya D'Amico and R' Judah Gross. We had such great times together. He had an amazing sense of humor and was so youthful and full of life.

are we in the Gemara?” as if he was not aware of the conversation around him. He would rather make himself look confused than see the Rebbi being disrespected!

Dr. Magid always walked around positive and happy. He believed wholeheartedly that everything was from Hashem and was for the best.

He only saw the good in others and I cannot recall ever hearing even one negative word come out of his mouth. He never stopped speaking about the different ideas he had about how we could, and should, reach more Jews; there is no question that his deep desire to bring Jews closer to Torah was a catalyst in Shamayim for countless Jews' return to their roots. While we daven three times a day, "Hashevainu Avinu L'Sorasecha" - "Return us our Father to Your Torah" - Dr. Magid had this prayer constantly on his heart and lips.

Visiting Mrs. Magid during shiva, she expressed something amazing to me. Dr. would sometimes come home from a shiur upset that someone (without saying any names, of course) spoke disrespectfully to one of the Rabbeim teaching the group. It may have been in the heat of a Torah argument, but he was very sensitive to anything he thought was disrespectful. So, what he would do to end a discussion that he thought was headed in the wrong direction? He would ask, “Where 94 WHAT'S DOING IN WATERBURY

We all know the Dr.’s famous words, “It’s hashgacha pratis!” But as this was not merely an expression, he lived his life this way. Despite any observable challenges he had, as well as those we still know nothing about, Dr. Magid always walked around positive and happy. He believed wholeheartedly that everything was from Hashem and was for the best. There is so much more to write about Dr. Magid, but these are but a few of the incredible lessons the doctor taught us by example.

Aside from the incredible time I spent learning with the Dr., he also gave me so much encouragement. He was always asking me about my writing and teaching, like a proud father, and of course, had to purchase multiple copies when my new sefer came out. He was always there for me for any help I needed. I will never forget the way he would respond to my phone calls, "Rabbi Kestenbaum!", with such a great excitement in his voice. He had an uncanny way of making others feel good - most likely, because he truly cherished other people and saw their greatness. His love for learning Torah, life, and people was contagious and deeply impacted all of us. While the Waterbury community and Yeshiva surely enhanced Dr. Magid's life, there is no question that he equally enhanced ours. Yehi zichro Boruch.

happened by chance. He always found a way to connect regular daily occurrences to the workings of Hashem’s greater plan. This deep connection would bring out his desire to bring Jews of all stripes close to Torah. He had notes that filled pages with his ideas on how to spread the Dvar Hashem to anyone that he may be able to reach, and even those that weren’t in his sphere.

His love for his community ran deep; he always asked if When we first started learning the Waterbury community was together, close to a decade growing and was excited ago, he approached each to see new families move night of learning with in. Creative Works Songs with Wings BY ELISHA FREEDMAN

As a part time musician, I am often called to enhance many different types of events. I’ve played at Bar Mitzvahs, weddings, 50th anniversary celebrations, Hachnasos Sifrei Torah and all sorts in between. However, I had never been called to play at a Yetzias Neshama. That is, until today. Last night I received a call from Rabbi Eisenbach, a local shaliach for Chabad in Connecticut. A man, a holocaust survivor, was on his deathbed. The doctors were predicting 12-48 more hours of life in this world. Would I come and play some music to accompany his soul as it prepares to leave this world? I was busy, and it would be hard to take the time from my day, but I wanted to hear more. Leizer Dovid was born in a small town near the great village of Satu Mare in Hungary/Romania. As the clouds of war gathered ominously on the horizon, Leizer Dovid’s father went urgently to speak to the Satmar Rebbe. “The danger is imminent! I’d like to take my family and flee; perhaps we can reach a destination which would be safer!” “Bleibt Du”, came the reply. “Remain here”. Leizer Dovid’s father followed the instruction of the Tzadik, and, as Hashem decreed from on high, every single one of Leizer Dovid’s siblings, cousins and friends were shipped off, packed in cattle cars to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where they perished at the hands of the Nazis, yemach shemam. Only Leizer Dovid survived. All alone in the world after the war, Leizer Dovid never forgave the Satmar Rebbe. It was impossible to wrap his head around the events that had befallen him over the past few years. He could not accept that it was a Heavenly decree, and if it was, he wanted no relationship with that God. Leizer Dovid headed for America, eventually settling in Connecticut, determined to cut himself off from anything Jewish. He would excise that part of his soul from his existence. In his laters years he married a gentile. 96 WHAT'S DOING IN WATERBURY

This was the Leizer Dovid that greeted me yesterday, lying on his deathbed in a picturesque cabin overlooking the beautiful Candlewood Lake, high up in the hills of Litchfield County. He looked up at us with a misty look in his eyes. Was it appreciation? Was it a look of nostalgia, perhaps the sight of two frum Jews in 2022 reminding him of 1930 Hungary? I couldn’t tell. He took our hands and whispered what seemed to be a strained thank you. What would we sing? We began singing Shalom Aleichem. The familiar tune wafted its way through the cabin, as Leizer Dovid’s lips and hands started to move. As the holy song continued, he got more animated. Malachei Hashareis, Malachei Elyon…. were the Malachim getting ready to greet him, cry with him for the pain he endured in his life. Would they tell him, it’s alright Leizer Dovid, we understand, who could blame you? No human should have to endure the loss which you did. But come, see your father, look at your siblings, they’re alright. There was a plan, after all. Maybe now you can see? We moved on to Ani Maamin. The tune which was composed as his friends and family were riding the cattle cars to meet their maker. Be’emuna She-e-lai-ai-ma… He was mouthing along to the words. Bevias, Hamoshi-i-ach, Bevias Hamoshiach Ani Ma-amin. When did he say these words last? His secular nephews who came to be with him suggested we sing the classic Israeli folk song Oseh Shalom. He seemed to be getting more energy, clapping along as we sang, Hu Yaase Shalom Aleinu…. Will Hashem and Leizer Dovid be able to make peace after all? Ve’al Kol Yisroel…. Yes, Leizer Dovid, you are part of the Jewish people. You’re one of us; you never left. With your gentile wife at your side, you are still returning your soul to God as a Jew. We said Shema Yisroel around his bedside. Leizer Dovid, you will be able tell Hashem, I couldn’t live as a Jew. It was too hard. But I died as a Jew. V’imru Amen.
