It’s the perfect autumn go-together — chilly temperatures, falling leaves and kokosh oozing with cinnamon filling. And when the kokosh comes from Gourmet Glatt, you know it was baked with only the finest and freshest ingredients. Now, that’s something to take comfort in at any time of the year. cedarhurst

2 WHAT'S DOING IN WATERBURY

Dear Readers, While it’s still early fall and the warm weather seems to be sticking around, we know from past experience that the plummeting temperatures here in Connecticut are just around the corner. But that doesn’t mean you can’t bundle up and enjoy all that the fall season has to offer! Check out this issue’s Closer Look for some great ideas for beautiful foliage trails, you’ll be glad you did! And while you’re at it, take advantage of fall’s bounty by visiting one of our many local apple orchards. Many of them boast a corn maze too which makes for an adventurous family outing for all ages. Enjoy building fun family memories!

COMMUNITY COMMENTARY Compiled by Tehilla Hoberman

When the first grade girls were starting to read the story of Jack and the beanstalk, they were first asked if anyone knew what a giant was. One girl raised her hand and responded, "It's a football team."

My preschooler was going over all the things he learned about on Rosh Hashanah. I asked him what special foods we eat. He replied, "An apple dipped in honey, a pomegranate, and a starfish.”

My 4 year old came home saying that her friend was sick, " I think she has poison Avi."

My class was learning different words in Hebrew that had to do with the parsha. During the review of the Parshas Noach words, the girls were taught that a ‫חיה‬ is a wild animal. When they were then asked what kind of animal a ‫ בהמה‬was, one girl raised her hand and said, "A calm animal”. My son came back from camp today telling me that one of the girls is going to ballet this summer. When I replied, ‘that's nice’, he responded, "Yes she's going to ballet the whole summer! She's flying on an airplane to get there!" I had to think for a minute, "Oh, did you mean she's going to L.A!?"

“We drove to school one morning to find a long line of cars waiting to get into the parking lot. When I informed my 3 year old that I had to park on the street, her first response was, "but I don't like this parking spot!" Then she said, "it's ok, I can be flexible!"

One day my preschool daughter very matter of factly said to me, “I want to marry totty but he’s married already!”

Share a humorous or unique experience with us for our next issue. Text: 203-233-3417 email: whatsdoingwtby@gmail.com WHAT'S DOING IN WATERBURY 29

Rabbi Sorscher learned in his formative years at Yeshiva of Staten Island and then at Bais Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, NJ for many years. A brilliant talmid chochom with extensive knowledge in Shas and poskim, he served as a rosh chaburah of the Dirshu chaburah, and famously serves as the bochen for the new applicants to Bais Medrash Govoha. Rabbi Sorscher later relocated to Southfield, Michigan, serving as a posek in the community and giving shiurim at the local yeshiva and to the kehillah of Cong. Yagdil Torah. With his impressive background and vast breadth of knowledge, Rabbi Sorscher is also a popular maggid shiur for Shas Illuminated which has been run by our very own Rabbi Yaakov Metz for many years. Rav Sorscher now gives the daily Oraysa shiur that is listened to by Bnei Torah across the globe. Rabbi Sorscher will be available all day in the Yeshiva to talk in learning and answer shailos. Many have already benefited from his erudition and sage advice. He will also serve as the second seder Rosh Chabura of the Kollel. On October 13th, the Yeshiva and Kollel held a welcome event in honor of Rabbi Sorscher. HaRav Reuven Feinstein Shlita, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva of Staten Island, graced us with his presence and uplifted the tzibbur with divrei bracha. The Rosh Yeshiva and Rosh Kollel spoke as well, followed by a drasha by Rabbi Sorscher. The evening ended with leibedig dancing. Over 150 community members came to celebrate this exciting historic evening for the Waterbury community!

NVWHS

Naugatuck Valley Women’s Health Specialists

NAUGATUCK VALLEY WOMEN’S HEALTH SPECIALISTS is an obstetrics and gynecology group with offices in Waterbury and Middlebury, CT. Serving the greater Waterbury area since 1984, our office is known for its warm and personal environment, where every patient is treated with the greatest respect and consideration. Our team consists of five dedicated doctors, an experienced certified nurse midwife and PA. We pride ourselves in building strong relationships with patients and providing the most up-to-date, quality health care in gynecology and obstetrics. We are affiliated with Saint Mary’s Hospital, where we perform state-of-the-art surgeries and deliver babies. Saint Mary’s Hospital is also home of The BirthPlace – the only in-hospital birth center in Connecticut – and it is open to women with low-risk pregnancies who desire the most natural childbirth experience possible while having all the services necessary to respond to any emergency situation. We believe that a number of factors help to make our practice unique: ♦ At NVWHS, we take a family-centered, holistic approach to healthcare. As part of our commitment to prevention, we have a clinical nutritionist in our office who will work with our patients on diet and lifestyle modification and targeted nutritional supplementation. ♦ In recognition of our patients’ busy schedules, we offer early morning, late evening, and Saturday appointments.

♦ All of our physicians are adept in advanced minimally invasive surgery. ♦ Our group has always been at the forefront in supporting women who wish to attempt a VBAC. Saint Mary’s Hospital leads the state in the rate of successful VBACs. ♦ Over the last 29 years we have delivered over 30% of the babies born in Waterbury. ♦ Our physicians and staff welcome women with high-risk pregnancies. Our distinctive management of high-risk pregnancies in conjunction with the specialists at Yale University and the University of CT Health Center has a proven record of excellent outcomes. PROTECT YOUR MOTOR VEHICLES Neighbors, With the winter months approaching I wanted to spend time in this edition, on safeguarding automobiles. During the colder months municipalities can see an increase in motor vehicle related thefts. With some of these "target hardening" tips you can better protect your motor vehicles. ✦ Secure all car doors, windows and trunk. ✦ Remove all keys from the vehicle. ✦ Remove key fobs from within and around the vehicle. ✦ Remove all valuables. ✦ When warming up your vehicle during the cold months, remain with the vehicle or use a remote starter. ✦ Never leave your car running unattended. ✦ Park in well-lit, unisolated locations. ✦ Report suspicious activity to the Police Department. Respectfully, Matt Lemos

(Plus, many challenges our peers are facing are concealed from us. Challenges are good at hiding.) We just took in another Rosh Hashanah: Hashem’s Day of Judgement. While (unlike in secular court) Hashem’s favor cannot be swayed by wealth or power, the Gemara is still full of guidance for us to help improve our standing in the Heavenly Court. It’s just not the kind of advice you’d hear from an attorney. (See, for instance, Rosh Hashanah 16b-18a). Here’s a top insider tip: “Whoever judges others favorably, Hashem will judge them favorably (Shabbos 127b).” A good path forward for us, if we want to up our ability to judge others favorably, can begin by our

acknowledging that we are prone to misjudging things we encounter from outside of our experience. And the inner world of others is always – by definition – outside of our experience. When we look at others, much of what we imagine we are seeing directly is actually only an interpretation. When we judge negatively, we need to recognize that we are treating as a certainty what is really an estimation. And not a very educated estimation at that. By freeing ourselves from negative judgments, we open ourselves up more to seeing the positive, which is the next step on our life journey. And we open all of us up together, so much more, to positive judgment and blessings from Above. WHAT'S DOING IN WATERBURY 95

We're all in the same boat.. BY: AARON SAPIRMAN

So you've been told... "Your package has been delayed" "It is stuck at Port" "Due to the weather....." "We are out of stock" "We don't make that size" "We can't get that anymore" "We don't have enough for your order" 'Your delivery came damaged " "Sorry it's the wrong color" "There's a 90 day lead time" In a world where we have been accustomed to rely so heavily on shipments, transportation, manufacturing, technology we have heard it all. No industry, no business big or small hasn't experienced some of the excuses listed above. But there is one. Ours. That's because our Supplier... Hashem Never delayed anything that He is providing for us Is never wrong with what, and to who He is sending it to He always has enough in stock of His endless kindness Nothing is ever damaged in His world of perfection There are no lead times.....the order is correct, it is an instant delivery He controls the weather so there are never delays. His sizing is custom made for me. This is the kind of company I want to work with. To top it off He is honest and straightforward, Loving, and gentle, Forgiving, and generous, Patient, and more patient, Knowledgeable, and forthcoming. You know what's crazy? Every time He sends over an invoice, there is a "zero balance due at this time". Except for the 10% Maaser charge that is always on there. Oh and did I mention that He also pays for all your food, health insurance, and paid vacations? He is also a doctor so if you ever get hurt or are not feeling well, He can cure you 100% All He asks for in return is to be the best YOU can be. Yes it's the YOU He cares about. He cares more about your success than anything. He went into "business" for the sake of YOUR business! He went as far to declare that he created the whole world, universe, galaxies, planets....just for YOU. Wow! He must want something in return? Yup he does......YOU and Only You! It’s the perfect autumn go-together — chilly temperatures, falling leaves and kokosh oozing with cinnamon filling. And when the kokosh comes from Gourmet Glatt, you know it was baked with only the finest and freshest ingredients. Now, that’s something to take comfort in at any time of the year. cedarhurst
