For over 60 years, the World Federation of International Music Competitions has represented the world’s premier music competitions. Incorporating more than 110 cities across 5 continents, its members represent the future of music by discovering and supporting young talents from all disciplines of classical music and jazz: soloists, conductors, composers or chamber musicians. The WFIMC is the guarantor of the high quality and integrity of its member competitions, which follow a set of common rules and pledge to do everything possible for the good of the artists they discover. It offers its members a set of valuable services and a platform for exchange, advice and support. The WFIMC plays a major role within the world of arts and culture, giving voice to music competitions and to all the young artists whose careers, through competitions, take a decisive turn. The WFIMC supports young talents, musical creation, a diversity of genres and cultures. It encourages the evolution of the musical world, its revitalisation and its integration in an increasingly dynamic environment. We invite you to discover in this annual brochure the richness and diversity of the WFIMC, a reflection of the world of music.

MESSAGE DU SECRÉTAIRE GÉNÉRAL

Founded by 13 European competitions eager to share ideas and practices, the WFIMC counts a wide variety of Members with different artistic vision and heritage spread across 40 countries. The Member Competitions of the WFIMC discover, reward and nurture young artists. These cultural events are a platform for international exchange, dialogue, personal and professional development as well as cultural tourism and community outreach. Today’s competitions seek to reward complete artists. Audiences are eager to support the person behind the music and today’s competitions encourage competitors to present their full voice with initiatives such as own-choice programming, interviews, community activities and chamber music performance. WFIMC Member Competitions celebrate much more than a perfect performance and prize money. Through competitions, musicians build stamina, prepare vast quantities of repertoire and learn to handle public interest. Pressure and nervous energy are ever-present, but international competitions are a preparation for the future. Today’s competitions provide young competitors with the opportunity to hear one another and to find their place amongst their peers. Entering the right competition at the right time with sufficient preparation and a strong artistic statement can open doors which would otherwise remain closed. I encourage you to learn more about the WFIMC and its Member competitions by visiting our website at www.wfimc.org and by making time to attend a Member Competition in person.

The year 2021 will see the sixteenth edition of the event held (since 1952) in Poznań. Expected to turn up are young virtuosos of a new generation, ones already brought up in the globalised world: oftentimes born in one country, educated in another, living in still another, and daily exposed to the influence of varied cultures. What unites them, however, is music, and, as always, the urge to challenge their peers’ talents, technical skills and artistic imagination.

First organised in Weimar in 1994, the International FRANZ LISZT Piano Competition sees itself as a peaceful contest at the highest level, in the spirit of Franz Liszt. The International JOSEPH JOACHIM Chamber Music Competition attracts the best up-and-coming ensembles to Weimar.
