Protect Your Sensitive Electronics from Lightning-Related Electrical Spikes

A

pril showers bring May flowers. But with the rain, you can expect some electrical storms along with lighting-related power surges or electrical spikes. These can cost a ton of money, by damaging expensive electrical appliances like refrigerators, computers, your central airconditioning unit, or even that new LCD TV. 45832002 Annoyances caused by this phenomenon can include erased data in all programmable electronics. Strike first, and protect your property with surge protection from West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC). Our twotiered approach is one of the most effective ways to protect your property. “This approach combines the installation of a meter base device and the use of plug strips,” said Terry Mullen, Manager of Marketing & Communications. A service entrance surge protection device reduces power surges to a lower level which will protect large appliances, such as your refrigerator or freezer. We refer to these appliances as “white goods” or electro-mechanical appliances that have compressors or motors. WFEC also offers individual devices that are designed to protect your more sensitive electronic equipment such as computers, TVs and microwaves. This equipment has micro-processors and is more susceptible to surges. This program is designed so that all of WFEC’s members can benefit from the protection it provides your home. If you have suffered damage due to lightning or power surges before, this program is for you. Should you have a properly installed surge suppression device from WFEC and you have equipment damage due to a surge, each one of our devices comes with a comprehensive warranty. 50381002 The meter base surge suppression kit can be leased for just $3.25 plus tax per month and purchased for only $124.95 plus tax. The in-home plug strip, can be leased for $5.75 plus tax per month (this price includes a meter base lease as well) and purchased for $89.95 plus tax. Call us at (800) 342-7400 or visit our website (www.westflorida.coop) to find out more about our surge suppression program today.

taken and what personal protective equipment is required are also discussed at the job briefing. Each crew member attending the briefing is required to sign a job briefing form that is kept on file. WFEC also complies with all OSHA and environmental regulations. 35876002 As part of WFEC’s safety program, they also participate in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) Rural Electric Safety Accreditation Program (RESAP) certification program. The goal of this program is to prevent injuries; establish electric utility safety and loss control standards; recognize cooperative employees who work every day to maintain a safe working environment and to compliment the co-op’s mission of reliable electric service for its members. RESAP certification also helps lower the cooperative’s insurance premiums. RESAP requires co-op’s to be re-certified every three years and WFEC just completed that process. A major component of the co-op’s safety program is community education. It is very important to the cooperative to make sure that its members know how to stay safe around electricity. We do this by conducting “Safety City” demonstrations for schools and community organizations. “Safety City” is a live electric demonstration that illustrates scenarios such as a power line falling onto a vehicle, encountering an underground service or coming in to contact with any live voltage and demonstrates what actions to take to stay safe in those situations. “Safety City” demonstrations are available free of charge to any school, group or organization that requests one. Contact the cooperative at (800) 342-7400 to find out more.

license for unlimited horsepower vessels and have served on the TriCounty Community Council Board for ten years, three of which I spent as Chairman. Length of Service on Board & Positions Held: I have been on West Florida Electric Cooperative’s Board of Trustees for 15 years. Who is your hero/role model and why? Gertha Simpson, my mother, taught me the importance of hard work. She was very community-oriented and taught me the value of giving back to my community. Bill Gee, a vice president at Ingram Barge mentored me during my time with the company and encouraged me to advance my career. If you could meet anyone (living or dead) who would it be and why? I’d like to meet Ronald Reagan because he was a no-nonsense leader. What is your favorite quote or saying? I have several: “How the cow eats the collards.” (which means telling it plainly); “Faster than a New York minute.”; “This isn’t my first rodeo.”; “Don’t burn your bridges, you might need to cross back over them.”; “I may wear out, but I won’t rust out.”

favorites is a live eel pitched in front of their path. They will strike just about any bait that is tossed, including live fish baits and colorful plastic jigs. The only problem is finding exactly which bait a cobia wants on a given day. It pays to have no less than three different baits ready to pitch at all times. More than one angler has been frustrated by watching a cobia simply turn his face away from a perfectly presented cast. The ability to quickly change an item on the menu can make all the difference in getting a finicky fish to bite. A hungry cobia will turn on an acceptable bait and totally engulf it to run dead away for a strong linestripping battle. This fish has a large tail and a streamlined torpedo shape that makes swimming an effortless task. Bringing a powerful, gaffed, cobia into the boat can be a dangerous event. Every deckhand has a cobia story about destruction or injury in the cockpit. Take precautions when landing this fish!26313004 As the spring migration declines, so will the numbers of boats. For saltwater fishermen, this will signal that spring is over and summer fishing has officially arrived.

favorites is a live eel pitched in front of their path. For saltwater fishermen, this will signal that spring is over and summer fishing has officially arrived.

taken and what personal protective equipment is required are also discussed at the job briefing.
