WFEC Selects New ROW Contractor

W

est Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) has selected ABC Professional Tree Services of Houston, Texas to be its new rightof-way contractor. ABC will begin their trimming contract in January 2014 in the Bonifay, Malone and Campbellton areas. All ABC trucks will be clearly identified with logos on their doors. West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) delivers power to a system of 4,000 miles of overhead power lines in four counties so maintaining rightof-ways is a never-ending and expensive job. It is very important for the cooperative to maintain an aggressive right-ofway strategy to ensure it is able to provide reliable service to its members and to keep employees and members safe. Trees and other vegetation in the right-of-way cause power outages, lights to blink, are safety hazards, make power line repairs difficult and costly, block access to lines, waste electricity by drawing it into the ground and are fire hazards. Trees growing into and touching power lines pose a major safety hazard, not only for WFEC linemen, but also for members and their families. Trees coming into contact with power lines may become energized and if touched, could shock or electrocute someone. Vegetation like trees, shrubs and brush growing too close to power lines and distribution equipment actually lead to about sixty percent of all power interruptions. These interruptions can occur when branches break and fall across lines or when trees fall onto them. When strong winds blow, limbs growing too close to lines may sway and touch them. WFEC and its contractors decide how to trim trees based on the amount of clearance needed around wires, the line voltage, the tree’s growth rate and the right-of-way maintenance cycle (how frequently trimming along the line is performed). If you have any questions about WFEC’s vegetation management program, please contact us at (800) 342-7400. Gate-Way Security Systems

Don’t Take the Merry Out of Your Christmas By Sara Peterson

B

efore your family puts up a tree or hangs the stockings this holiday season, start a new tradition. Put safety at the top of your list. Too often the twinkling lights people see are on top of a fire truck or ambulance—the result of holiday accidents that could have been prevented. Trees and lights are danger-prone holiday decorations. According to the United States Fire Administration, Christmas trees start an average of 260 house fires each season, resulting in more than $16 million in property damage. Another 150 house fires are sparked by holiday lights and decorative lighting, costing $8.9 million in damage. Unsafe practices while putting up decorations are to blame for even more injuries. Nearly 6,000 individuals visit emergency rooms each year for falls. Four thousand more are treated for injuries associated with extension cords. Safety steps don’t end with bright decorations. Gifts trigger injuries, too. Toys that are not used as intended or used without proper supervision lead to avoidable accidents. When it is time to deck your halls, take these precautions to ensure the safety of you, your family, and holiday guests: TREES Real or artificial, short or tall, Christmas trees are often the culprit for danger. Incorporate these safety guidelines in your decorating routine: • Make sure an artificial tree is labeled “fire resistant.” Be aware that “fire resistant” does not mean “fire proof.” • Make sure a live tree is fresh and green. Dry, brittle limbs and shedding needles are a breeding ground for sparks. Water a live tree regularly to prevent it from drying out. • Place any type of tree away from heat sources such as fireplaces, vents, and radiators. LIGHTS Festive lights give homes a magical glow. When decorating this season, a few simple safety tips can keep your spirits bright. • Do not overload electrical outlets. Most lights are designed to connect no more than three strands. Inspect the wires periodically to make sure they are intact and not warm to the touch. • Never leave lights on overnight or when no one is home. • Replace strands that show signs of damage, such as bare or frayed wires, broken bulbs, or loose connections. Faulty lights can send an electrical ISSUE DECEMBER 2013

Cornbread & Sausage Stuffing

Submitted by: Ronnie Smith (recipe contest winner) Ingredients: 1 pound sweet Italian turkey sausage (about 4 links), casing removed 2 cups finely chopped onion 1 ½ cup finely chopped celery ¼ teaspoon salt Freshly ground pepper, to taste 2 pounds prepared cornbread, cut into ¾ inch cubes (about 12 cups) ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley 1 tablespoon chopped fresh sage 2 ¼ cups reduced-sodium chicken broth Directions: 1) Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Coat a 9x13 inch baking dish with cooking spray. 2) Cook sausage in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat, stirring and breaking up with a wooden spoon, until browned, about 10 minutes. Add onion and celery; cover, reduce heat & cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 10 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a large bowl. Season with salt & pepper. Add cornbread, parsley and sage. 3) Bring broth to a simmer in a small saucepan. Pour 1 cup over the stuffing mixture and toss gently (the cornbread will break into smaller pieces). Add as much of the remaining broth as needed, ½ cup at a time, until the stuffing feels moist but not wet. Spoon the stuffing into the prepared pan and cover with foil. 4) Bake the stuffing until thoroughly heated, about 25 minutes. Serve warm.

Serve warm.
