Simple Summer Savings

I

t’s finally summer! After an unseasonably cool spring, hot temperatures are finally here. We’re always glad to see them, but hot temperatures often bring with them higher energy bills and increased energy consumption. Here are a few simple ways you can save money and be more efficient this summer season. Did you know that 54 percent of the average home’s energy use can be attributed to heating and cooling? That makes your HVAC system the largest user of energy in your home. What can you do to help mitigate those costs? The most important thing you can do is to make sure your unit is properly sized. Sizing is key to maintaining your home’s efficiency and comfort. Keep in mind that bigger isn’t always better. Oversized equipment can lead to reduced comfort and excessive noise. Oversizing units can also shorten the life of your equipment, reduce efficiency and accelerate wear on system components. On the other hand, undersized units can suffer from reduced efficiency and experience early equipment failure due to accelerated wear on the system’s components. Dirt and neglect are also top causes of heating and cooling system inefficiency and failure. It is very important to have routine maintenance performed by a qualified technician and to change your system’s air filter on a regular basis. WFEC recommends having your unit serviced at least twice each year – each spring and each fall. 34378005 Installing a programmable thermostat will also help reduce cooling costs. It allows you to regulate your home’s temperature when you are away or sleeping. A programmable thermostat with four-temperature settings can save you up to $180 year. You can also save money with a manual thermostat by turning it up during hot weather. WFEC recommends setting your thermostat to 78 degrees Fahrenheit or higher in the summer. Depending on how they are used, ceiling fans can also help reduce energy costs while providing comfort in your home. During summer months, make sure your fans are blowing air downwards into the living areas. Try turning your thermostat up two degrees and using your ceiling fans to lower air conditioning costs. A home’s exterior (outer walls, ceiling, windows and floor) is known as the “envelope” or “shell” which, when properly insulated, can save you more than $200 a year or up to 10 percent on total annual energy bills. Improve your home’s (continued on page 12)

Energy Efficiency

Tip of the Month When shopping for a new appliance, consider lifetime operation costs as well as the up-front purchase price. Refrigerators last an average of 12 years, clothes washers about 11, and dishwashers about 10. Check the Energy Guide label for the appliance’s estimated yearly operating cost, and look for ENERGY STAR units, which usually exceed minimum federal standards for efficiency & quality.

et’s be honest – it isn’t much fun to pay bills. But it’s even less fun to pay more than you have to. Windows provide our homes with light, warmth and ventilation, but they can also impact your home’s energy efficiency. By installing energyefficient windows and doors, you can lower your home’s energy costs and increase your comfort. When you shop, look for windows and doors with high efficiency ratings. 79999001 Upgrading your home’s windows and doors can be costly. That’s why West Florida Electric Cooperative and Regions Bank developed a program for financing energy efficiency improvements like replacing doors and windows, replacing or tuning up heating and cooling systems, sealing ductwork, adding insulation and improving attic ventilation. With the Home Efficiency Loan Program (HELP), qualifying members may receive low-interest loans to make whole-house improvements to lower their energy usage – and power bills. WFEC will start with an energy audit to target efficiency opportunities and decide what upgrades you need to make. You’ll complete a simple loan application with Regions Bank. If approved, you’ll hire a contractor to do the work. Then you’ll make monthly payments to Regions Bank. It’s that simple to make your home more comfortable and save on your electric bill. Call us at (800) 342-7400 or visit our website at www.westflorida.coop for more information.

envelope with caulk, spray foam, weather stripping or by adding insulation. Air infiltration from the home’s “envelope” can cause homes to lose efficiency. The door leading from the outside or garage into the house is a common area for air leakage. By installing a door sweep to seal the gap here, you can prevent conditioned inside air from escaping while blocking outside air from getting in. This helps keep the indoor living space comfortable. Another place air can infiltrate your home is through outlets and light switches. Use inexpensive outlet gaskets to seal any holes around them. You can also purchase these gaskets for light switches. 38575002 It is also important to caulk and weather-strip areas around doors and windows to prevent air leakage. Replacing regular window screens with energy efficient sun screens during summer as an extra barrier against the sun’s heat is another thing that can help reduce heat gain in your home. For more summer energy-saving tips, visit our website, www.westflorida. coop.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your co-op on technological advancements? rom the early days of cooperative members reading their own meters and mailing the readings in to Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technology that allows the cooperative to read meters from the office, the utility industry has experienced a lot of One acre lot, corner, wooded, will changes. Members can access this map from the co-op Facebook page as well. Cooperatives like WFEC are also exploring new ways to provide account information to members. For instance, the cooperative is looking into adding new programs that will provide members with mobile applications for smart phones. Members can access this map from the co-op Facebook page as well. Cooperatives like WFEC are also exploring new ways to provide account information to members. envelope with caulk, spray foam, weather stripping or by adding insulation. For more summer energy-saving tips, visit our website, www.westflorida. coop.

My Power Bills are No Longer a ‘Pane’ Thanks to WFEC

L

et’s be honest – it isn’t much fun to pay bills.
