Generally Speaking

I

'm sorry about another space story, but... at the height of the Cold War, President Kennedy made the following proclamation in a special message to Congress “that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.” At the time of the announcement, the country did not have the scientific or technological resources to deliver this promise. In fact, we were well behind the Soviet Union in space exploration. To make the task even more challenging, President Kennedy was killed 2 ½ years after this speech. President Johnson quickly assumed the responsibility and, as the story goes, planned a trip to NASA to get an update on the status. While touring the facility, he ran into a janitor cleaning up a spill; whereby, the President proceeded to introduce himself and ask the co-worker’s role with NASA. Instead of the anticipated “janitor” response, this gentleman said…he was helping to put a man on the moon. I shared the above story at a Wetherington Managers meeting last month and asked for a commitment to this concept from every manager. Obviously we are not putting a man on the moon, but our commitment to exceptional member service needs to be unwavering. They all accepted and agreed that during these unsettling times when labor dollars are stretched to the max we will be determined to continue providing you the type of service you’ve come to expect from Wetherington employees.

Golf News Women’s Golf News I know it’s hard to believe, but Spring will arrive! It’s been a cold and snowy winter but, take heart, golf season is almost here. We’re already busy planning the WIGG (Women’s Informational Golf Gathering) which will take place on Wed., April 22, so mark your calendars! The WIGG offers a great opportunity to meet and welcome new members and, of course, catch up with old friends. Please return your league sign-up sheet to Lew Ann Lawhorn as soon as you decide which group or groups you want to join. We will have additional sign-up sheets at the WIGG. The committee chairs of our different leagues are already planning the fun events for our 2009 golf season. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at the WIGG on April 22. It’s always lots of fun! Re-grip Special It’s that time of year again. We here in the Golf Shop are chomping at the bit to get going !! In the meantime, I can’t think of a better time to replace those old, worn out grips. Your grips are vital because they are the bridge from your hands to the club. Harvey Penick said that playing with slick grips is like trying to climb a greased rope in gym class. The Golf Shop realizes this and for the rest of February and March, we are offering a discount on our re-gripping services.

Swim News Make Plans to Join The Wetherington Waves Swim Team!

M

ark your calendar! Sign ups for the swim team will be held Sunday, May 3, between 4 and 6 pm. at the Wetherington Lodge. The Wetherington Waves summer swim team is a great way to meet new friends, exercise, build confidence and participate in friendly swimming competitions! We’re a team of approximately 80 swimmers, aged 4 to 18, participating in the local Tri-County Swim League. Our athletes range from young beginners who have just begun swimming an entire length of the pool, to highly competitive swimmers competing year round. We welcome your children! We practice mornings at the pool beginning in early June, starting when school is out of session. Prior to that we begin practices May 18th after school.

Here are some highlights of the Wetherington Waves… • Our practice times coordinate with tennis lessons and golf clinics. • We have ’highly social’ swim meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings. • We have social events, a Pasta Dinner and Awards Banquet at the Club complete with dancing, dinner and awards for every swimmer! • We offer a “sign out” sheet for summer vacations, camps, conflicts etc. • The season starts May 18 and ends July 26. • Wetherington G&CC members are encouraged to sign up their GRANDCHILDREN for the Waves. Grandchildren DO NOT need to live with grandparents; all appropriate fees will be billed to grandparents’ accounts. • Wetherington G&CC will again offer it’s Summer Swim Membership. This highly affordable membership gives you access to all that the Wetherington swim and tennis complex offers throughout the summer! Memberships are limited, so contact Roberta Frazer at 755-2582 to sign up now! • Not quite sure if swim team is right for your child or grandchild? We offer a two week trial… if they don’t like it, you don’t pay. (We have NEVER had anyone change their mind once they join us!)

Learn more! Ready to sign up or need more information? Come to team sign-ups at The Wetherington Lodge (next to the pool) Sunday, May 3, between 4 and 6 pm. Head coach Cathy Herr and her coaching team will be on hand to answer questions or you can contact Parent Board President Kim Frazier at 737-7087 with questions.

Tennis News Hello, Wetherington Tennis Members, With the season fast approaching, it may be time for some of you to start ridding yourself of that winter rust! Stretching can be one of the easiest low-impact exercises you can do to avoid pre-season injury. How should you stretch? If you haven’t warmed up, you should run enough to warm up your body and then be in a position to stretch without risking an injury! Please feel free to contact Frederic at 368-9543 if you have any questions. Happy Holidays! Frederic Sanchez, Wetherington GCC, Head Tennis Pro

Membership Membership Corner:

B

y now most of you are aware of our new Introductory Membership program (more details on page 13). The program allows someone to try our club for 12 months by simply making one annual payment of $4000 for an individual and $5000 for a family membership. This trial period should give these new members plenty of time to realize just how special Wetherington is. Sponsoring new members is an important part of building our sense of community here. Your family, friends and business associates are the perfect candidates for future members because they share common interests and values with you and many of your fellow members. Please do your part this month and refer someone to our club. Qualified sponsors receive a $500 or $400 merchandise credit for candidates who are accepted for membership. The relationships they will make and community they will join cannot be duplicated anywhere else. You should all be very proud to be members of Wetherington Golf & Country Club. Please share that pride with others you know by sponsoring them as a new member. Sincerely , Roberta Frazer Membership Director
