2022 programme

Welcome back / Croeso nol

AM RYDDHAD! We’re back! After a 2 year hiatus the fifth Big Retreat Festival is finally ready to roll. A lot of hard work over the last two years has gone into keeping the feel good spirit of the festival alive. A weekend jam packed with a smorgasbord of activities and workshops designed to help you find your feel good. This year promises to be an incredibly special event, and a long overdue reminder of what it means to get together as humans and experience the joy of life. We want to take this opportunity to thank the Welsh Government. Without the support and advice from the Cultural Recovery Fund we would not be here today. Thankyou to Laura Owen Sanderson from We Swim Wild for writing our environmental plans and for helping steer the festival this year. A huge thank-you also extends to you, our Big Retreat Family for believing in us, supporting us against the odds, and trusting us with your feel good journey. It’s been one hell of a bumpy ride, but I've never been more excited to open our doors to you, our Big Retreat family, with open arms and put on the show of the year. We have expanded our areas to include the Roaring Fire Pit adventure stage, Darwin's Den with nature workshops and talks, and the Mind Space. A tribute to our dearest Gryff. A loss our family will never forget, and a stark reminder of why mental health, well-being and finding your feel good are so important. Kim, my dear friend, cousin and mother of Gryff has started the ‘Gryff Mind Space’ charity. This is the first showcase of her charity, so pop over to the mind space and show some support. We have always thought of the festival as a community of people, a family that gets together once a year. So this year especially, let’s treat each other with care and responsibility, and fill this festival with light and love. But most of all, let's have an incredible weekend.

FAQS // CWESTIYNAU CYFFREDIN It’s my first time at the festival. I have heard it’s great. Is it still intimate? It is! You’re in for a real treat. We keep performances high but our numbers low. We never exceed more than 3000 on site because we want to keep the same intimate feel as those early days. We think it’s one of the top intimate feel good festivals in the U.K. We are confident you will enjoy it! So what do I need to do? Do I need a ticket to enter the festival? Yes, because we’re based in the small village of Lawrenny you will need to purchase your ticket before the event. Just head to to purchase your day or weekend ticket. Is it just yoga? No. We have a wide variety of experiences to help you find you feel good. You can choose from foraging, wild swimming, fire walking, comedy, music, cooking, inspiring talks… you name it we have most probably got it! What do I do when I get there? Will it be obvious? One of the great things about our festival is the size. Lawrenny is mighty but small. There is a small road into the village and the site for parking will be clearly visible. If you have a campervan pass you will need to follow the signs for this. These will clearly be visible and stewards will be on hand to point you in the right direction. I bought my ticket in 2020. What should I do? There is a 2020 ticket holder check in especially for you. This will be clearly signposted at reception. Make sure you have your ticket confirmation with you. Do I need cash? There is a mix of cash and card stalls. Some are cash only and there is no cash point in the village. It is advised that you bring cash with you. What about eating and drinking when I am on site? There are plenty of food stalls serving up a variety of food. Vegan, vegetarian, meat and even gluten free. This is all well and good but what if I have more questions on the weekend? Don’t worry we have a manned reception desk and large timetable available with all the info you will need.

andrew clarke- kirtan and song

Andrew, a professional chef for over 20 years and guitarist for 30 years, has recently found a new path in shamanism and medicine work, holding weekly ceremonies with songs, icaros, and mantras. Discover Kirtan- kirtan means “to praise that which is exalted”—aka, the divine. The word “kirtan” also stems from a Sanskrit root that means “to cut through,” he says, so kirtan is also “a practice for cutting through the idea of separation, for connecting to our hearts and connecting to the moment through sound.”

hesh Hayward shares his thoughts on yoga... A great Yogi once told me, if you can control your breathing then you are Doing Yoga. We all conjure up images in our heads when we think of Yoga, in the West it’s normally someone in a contorted posture or upside down in a headstand effortlessly smiling. But,the reality is that Yoga isn’t just about the Body, far from it. Yoga is about the way we live our lives, how we eat, think, speak, breath and even sleep. Yes, the Asana ( physical movement ) is important as far as keeping us physically healthy, supple in our joints and strong goes. But, our approach to our internal wellness is paramount in finding Stillness of the Mind, and the effect that has on our mental health. The wider picture of a Yogi or Yoga is the person as a whole and also the Sangha ( community) in which you involve yourself in.There is no part of your life that Yoga is not a positive connection too, and with time and energy the path of Yoga is a very simple and beautiful way to live. Everything basically comes back to the breath, the present Moment Practice and the understanding of the NOW. To be in control of your breathing means you regulate your body and mind simultaneously and this helps you to be the Best version of YOU. During my life I’ve changed my outlook on almost every aspect of living, from the TV I watch to the relationships with family members and friends. So, is Yoga for you? Well we all do it regardless if you know it or not. But, when it is intentional that’s when life blossoms and a NEW flow enters life. How to get started! Breathing, taking time just once a day, for a few moments to sit and breath gently through the nose. This could be first thing in the morning , on the bus, at your desk or before you eat your meal. Notice the difference before and after your time out, and then start to build up from there. Notice the moment, be quiet in the mind and rest the body...... good luck and you can start NOW.

Billie Rose

We will learn the beading technique, how to make a tassel, as well as exploring prayer beads from around the world. Connect to your creativity and leave feeling relaxed and nourished.

Have you ever had that thought deep down in your gut where you truly believe that the only thing holding you back is you? I did and that’s why I now facilitate Firewalking because what I learned from my very first firewalk is a simple truth; that truly the only thing stopping me, was me That one simple understanding, has now pushed me further along on my path, a path of my choosing. Up until that moment I felt like a feather in the wind constantly tossed asunder no surety, never feeling safe. No clear direction. I realised the power was mine.

Shiva Priya & Sanatan

A world away from pitch-perfect choir singing or auto-tuned pop melodies, Kirtan is more about the intention of making sound, how you feel whilst you’re making it and the effects that ripple out from there. Kirtan doesn’t have to sound harmonious and like most things, it’s not about what you do but the way you do it. The word kirtan, or kirtana, means ‘telling, narrating, enumerating or describing’ and originates from the Vedic period, where it was first written as anukirtana or anukriti, meaning a ‘re-telling’.

The meaning of Pranayama is energy control. All too often in modern life we are losing much of our precious energy due to our busy minds and more importantly, a disconnection from our breath. Our free, powerful life force within us is being neglected, meaning we are living in ours heads and not predominantly in our body. The Oxygen Advantage has helped many Olympic Athletes achieve their full potential. This breathing technique has been scientifically proven and you don’t need to be an Olympian to benefit from increased energy and enhanced focus.

I teach a foundation level course in Cardiff which is affiliated to the Bristol School of Shiatsu and facilitate welbeing workshops which develop self awareness and embodiment . Shiatsu is traditional Japanese bodywork which uses Oriental medicine and 5 element theory along with Western anatomy and physiology to inform a physical practice which includes stretches and manipulations, meridian massage, acupressure points, holding and rocking. It is carried out on a futon on the floor and the client is always fully clothed. I love Shiatsu because it meets us on so many different levels, physically, emotionally, spiritually, constitutionally and psychologically. It can be deeply nourishing and relaxing aswell as powerfully moving and strong.

Hi! I’m Sian, a somatic yoga teacher, massage therapist and lover of dance/ movement in general. I started running dance waves in December 2021, due to a lack of dance opportunities in my local area. They are inspired by Gabrielle Roth’s 5 Rhythms, which take you on a journey through the rhythms of Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness. The journey is really one into your body and mind, exploring what sensations/ thoughts/emotions arise as you move, rather than an attempt to perform a set sequence of movements.

Family Constellations- It is based on the inspirational work of Bert Hellinger, whose approach of honouring and acknowledging helps heal the deeply embedded forces in the family system Charaka has had the great honour of training personally with Bert Hellinger in Austria. “When the family is brought into order, an individual from the family can leave the nest. He feels the power of the family behind him. Only when the connection to the family is recognized and responsibilities have been made clear and divided up, does the individual feel free of burden. He can go his own way, without the past burdening him and tying him down.” Family Constellations is a gentle and profound way of looking at and bringing healing to situations that hold us back and create unhappiness in our lives. They can uncover hidden dynamics and loyalties which entangle us with others, helping us to discover ways of healing and resolution,

OSHO DANCING Forget the dancer, the center of the ego. Become the dance. That is the meditation. Dance so deeply that you completely forget that you are dancing and begin to feel that you are the dance. The division must disappear; then it becomes a meditation. If there is division, then it is an exercise: good, healthy, but it cannot be said to be spiritual. It is just a simple dance. Dance is good in itself. As far as it goes, it is good. After it, you will feel fresh, young. But it is not yet meditation. The dancer must go, until only the dance remains.

We sat down with Adventure Stage Director Laura Owen Sanderson to find out why you should head to the roaring fire pit, adventure stage. I’m what you might call an everyday adventurer. Inspired by the likes of Alistair Humphreys to find adventure on my doorstep. Some of the adventure speakers this weekend inspired me to get out and protect what I love through adventure activism campaigns. I’ve swum every U.K National Park from source to sea and i’m currently training for our caving expedition to collect research data on rock filtered waters. The adventure stage is a mix of experienced adventurers like Anna Mcnuff through to new adventurers like Vedangi. We have an adventure for everyone, from big wave surfing exploits, barefoot runs, Atlantic rows through to global expeditions. We even have an adventure talk whilst Fell Fell oodie cooks up an adventure meal in front of your very eyes! I hope the speakers inspire you to live more adventurously and make good use of your time on this planet!

Laura ( pictured) is also the founder of We Swim Wild where she advocates for cleaner waterways through Adventure activism campaigns and national citizen science programmes.

1) Plan the meal appropriately – When the weather is colder the last thing you want to be doing is sitting still next to your camp stove with a recipe that is better slow cooked. 2) Prepare your ingredients – in cooler conditions speed is preferable. 3) Only take what you need – Fresh food often weighs more than the dehydrated adventure packs, so you don’t want to be carrying up a full larder. Decant things and portion out to save on mass and space without compromising on flavour. 4) Reuse and recycle – Old hair wax pots, toiletry bottles, yoghurt pots, old camera film canisters all make great containers. 5) Consider what you are bringing back – Using heavy containers means you have to carry heavy containers down again. Pots and tubs that fit inside each other when empty will cut a lot of space in your rucksack. By pre-prepping ingredients there shouldn't be much (if any) rubbish to bring down LEAVE NO TRACE. 6) Take a sealable bag – Ziplock or an old drybag will suffice. It is good to keep contents that may leak in both, on the way up and on the return journey to save your bag.

Edible Flowers

Mary Ellen Gardening

I love edible flowers! Growing them is always a great way to experiment with plants and even surprise dinner guests with inventive, colourful garnishes and cocktails. In the garden, growing flowers specifically to use in cooking can be a fun way to plan your garden as well. As you sow your seeds and nurture the plants, you’ll feel yourself focussing in on moments in the garden and giving yourself time to step away from the outside world. When you spend time feeling your connection to the natural world, breathing deeply and nurturing growth you will experience a great many wellbeing benefits both physically and mentally. We know that just looking at a flower can make us feel happy - so why not grow lots of them!? Decide which edible flowers you would like to grow as early as possible in the year so you can plan ahead and not only make sure you have the seeds or plants available but also that your soil is prepared ready to sow and plant at the right time of year. Just like any other food, edible flowers all taste a little different. Some are spicy or peppery like Nasturtiums, some have a little zing such as Marigolds and others are very delicate such as Violas and Pansies. Consider the tastes when you look at which seeds to sow. Take a look at what kind of style and feel you would like your garden to be and then look for edible flowers that match! If you are looking for white, try Chamomile and Alyssum for pretty white flowers or vibrant colours such as the blue Cornflower and pink Fuchsia. Will you use them as a salad garnish or in drinks? Will you want to use them as a medicine, such as a herbal tea or in a tonic. The usages are wide and varied so make sure you enjoy some research first. There are so many edible flowers to grow that you shouldn’t feel restricted by space if you have a smaller area or even a balcony. You can grow in hanging baskets, pots and containers or in larger beds and borders - there are lots of options. Popular edible flowers are: Hibiscus, Dandelion, Magnolia, Peony, Calendula, Gladiolus, Squash flowers, Borage Day Lily, Rose, Honeysuckle, Pansy and Viola, Nasturtium and many many more! Don’t forget herbs as well. You can follow me online for lots of gardening tips:

Aswell as massage therapists and wellbeing practices to help you find your Feel Good. Get into the festival spirit with cheerleading, dj sessions and circus skills. “

The tragic loss of a young man to suicide is driving a range of mental health and wellbeing initiatives at The Little Retreat glamping site in Lawrenny, Pembrokeshire and at The Big Retreat Festival, which takes place on land neighbouring the site from June 3-6. Gryff Morgan, 18, from Narberth, died last November following a period of mental health difficulties during which his family struggled to get him the help he needed. His mother Kim feels that gaps between services, combined with inadequate training for key professionals who dealt with Gryff, contributed to the tragic loss of her son. Gryff had shown signs of autism from an early age but was only referred for diagnoses towards the end of his life, by which time the fact that he was legally an adult made it difficult for Kim to help him get the right help and support. Now Kim is working with her cousin Amber Lort-Phillips, founder of The Little Retreat and The Big Retreat, to create a Mind Space therapy offering at the glamping site and the new Gryff’s Mind Space area at The Big Retreat, which will include over 18 different wellbeing-focussed talks and activities. These will range from The Anti-Burnout Club, which will help people recognise and deal with burnout, to a sleep therapy workshop for people with disturbed sleep. Organisations including mental health charity MIND, bereavement support charity 2wish, substance awareness charity Barod, Get the Boys a Lift – a community interest company that works to encourage men to get talking about their mental health – and peer to peer support group Living in Suicide’s Shadow (LiSS) will all be holding activities in Gryff’s Mind Space. Meanwhile, Kim is working hard to raise money for mental health charities; so far she has raised over £35,000, with the funds donated to charities including Pembrokeshire MIND and Get The Boys A Lift. A portion of the profits from therapies in the Mind Space at The Little Retreat will also go into the fundraising pot. Therapies in The Mind Space treatment room ranging from aromatherapy to reflexology aim to help people relax and take care of their mental wellbeing.
