C MPASS John and Ann Betar said, “I do” November 25, 1932 and they are still happily married. John is 101; Ann is 97 and they still live independently in their own home. They have five children, 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. How do you stay married for 80 years?
Where EVERYONE Is Welcome!! SUNDAY SERVICE 10 AM October 27, 2013
People told them they would never last but they fooled the naysayers, the statistics and not only stayed together but stayed in love. They both gave advice on making marriage work: John said, “Get along. Compromise. Live within your means and be content.” They both credit God with the source and secret of their success. Ann said, “How can you not feel God right with you and blessing you?”
MESSAGE Rev. Ted Boodle WORSHIP Rev. Mark Davis
Faith and old-fashioned values build stability, loyalty and longevity into life. People like John and Ann are the true romantics, the true heroes of our times. Not the serial swinging door romances of the rich and famous.

John and Ann made a commitment to doing life together and they did. Community means doing life together. Our disposable culture conditions people to temporary relationships. People are paying a high price for temporal relationships. They pay in loneliness, insecurity, depression, stress and lingering sense of discontent. Funny isn’t it? Here we are in the most entertainment soaked, affluent culture in history yet we are not marked by contentment but rather by an insatiable appetite for more, for something new, for a magic happy bullet. Sometimes it’s the old paths that lead us home. Paths like loyalty, commitment, daily routines, forgiveness and tenacity. Tenacity resists the siren calls to selfishness and to quitting. I’m sure John and Ann could have quit had they allowed the world to conform them. But faith conformed them to lasting love. Something will conform us. What will it be?
