OUR INNER

C MPASS In 2012 a team of scientists joined together to create a super-computer that would match the human brain. The lead scientist wrote: “We anticipate that the brain model we develop will have most, if not all, human cognitive capabilities.” Good luck. Fellow scientists are not so confident. First these contrarian scientists argue that we can’t possibly reproduce the connectivity of the 100 to 500 trillion synapse of the adult brain. They also point out that the adult brain is constantly changing and growing. The lead scientist admits that the human brain is millions of times more powerful than the most powerful super-computer that exists today. And it only weighs three pounds and is 75% water. We humans don’t use our amazing brains very well. Someone defined the IPhone as an amazing instrument with which anybody can immediately connect with the vast storehouse of human knowledge yet who uses it to send selfies and argue with strangers. The brain is capable of much more than most people demand of it.

Recently the New York Times ran an essay lauding the benefits of reading. People who read more retain and enhance their mental capacities. Children develop better cognitive abilities if they are avid readers. The lesson seems clear: use it or lose it. Besides, reading is one of life’s greatest delights. Reading the right material is like taking antibiotics. It fights off error. Is it any wonder that cult leaders, dictators and weird apostles discourage independent thought? Not really. Anybody who discourages independent thought and healthy critical thinking is a charlatan. One day we will be the central figure in a somber ceremony. People will tell stories, cry a little, laugh a little, take one last slow ride and then eat sandwiches. Until then: remember that God gave you your brain. Use it!
