john McCLELLAND As I begin my final address to you as your club president I find myself reflecting on our achievements and company growth since I was first elected on the board in 1985. Our clubs have become an icon in the North West and are highly recognised throughout the state. May I say thank you to all members, guests and team members for your support and patronage. It is your loyalty that has seen our clubs continue to thrive and prosper.

BrewFest

While I’m stepping down it gives me great pleasure to thank our three candidates on nominating for the board and wish them all the best in the upcoming election. I would remind members to use your voice to guide the future of your clubs and cast your vote. Voting commences Friday November 10 and continues up to and including Thursday November 16. Candidate profiles and voting times can be found on page 2. The two successful candidates will be announced at our Annual General Meeting which will be held in Blazes at Wests on Tuesday November 28 commencing at 6.30pm. Only financial full fee, pensioner, Tamworth RSL, Tamworth Tennis, honorary life or gold life members are eligible to attend and vote at the AGM.

Salvation Army Giving Tree

As we come to the end of another year we look back to the year that was. 2017 saw the completion of our two new outdoor areas at Wests - The Terrace and The Patio. We moved our container kitchen to The Courts @ East and introduced food on weekends, along with raffles on a Friday night and Sunday afternoon. On the field, we watched a local representative team take on the Newcastle Jets and very recently watched a climatic National Rugby Championship match between the NSW Country Eagles and Perth Spirit. We recently started to renovate the façade of the Wests club entrance, which will be completed before Christmas.

CHristmas DAY LUNCH MENU

The silly season will soon be upon us and with it the end of Spring Racing Carnival – including the Melbourne Cup, which we will be celebrating at each of our three clubs. BrewFest, our very popular annual Craft Beer and Food Festival will be held mid-November and another round of Courtside Eats events will be held at The Courts. We also have some very exciting Christmas festivities to celebrate at all three clubs – including three different toy raffles (1 for each club!).

On behalf of the board, the last time I will be able to say that, I would like to wish you all a very safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

HOW TO VOTE

You may submit your vote in person only.

Meet the Candidates James TRELOAR

I have been a member of the Wests Entertainment Group for 20 years, a resident and business owner in Tamworth for more than 40 years. I have a strong interest in Tamworth serving on the Tamworth Council for 29 years and as Mayor for 14 years. I know how important Wests is to this community; it is the largest and most successful registered club in this region. I want to ensure that success continues, offering members modern and comfortable clubs with affordable facilities and attractions for members and guests to enjoy. I will support the board in continuing to offer quality and value for money food, entertainment facilities that attract national artists and sporting venues capable of hosting national events. I support the continued development of Wests and Diggers, and the upgrade of The Courts to ensure members have the best available facilities in Tamworth. I will encourage the board to continue looking at new facilities and opportunities that may lessen the club’s reliance on gaming revenue. I support the boards goal to reduce borrowings to ensure there is sufficient finance to accept any new and exciting opportunity as it may arise, to allow Wests to continue to offer members modern and comfortable facilities.

Liz WHITE

My name is Liz White and I have lived in Tamworth for most of my adult life. I believe it’s time for a female member to have a strong voice to represent our members on the board. My previous employment record is 28 years as an employee of Wests and 30 years as senior telephonist at Tamworth Hospital. I am currently working as a volunteer at the welcome desk at the hospital and also at the Blood Bank. My business experience is in hotels & motels as licensee & manager also partner in a small trucking business before retiring. I know I have a lot to contribute to the board with my past business experience and customer service including 50 years in public & private sector. I am proud to have been a member of this great club for the past 30 years. It has been exciting to observe its growth and value to the community.

Christopher WATSON

I have been a board member of Wests Entertainment Group for the past 3 years. I am heavily involved in line dancing, charity work, a member of Rotary, a passionate Tamworthian and along with my wife, Gemma run Chris Watson Travel. I have received numerous awards for my work within the community including a Sapphire Paul Harris Fellow, OM commendation, Young Business Person of the Year 2012, Tamworth Young Citizen of the Year to name a few accolades but I say the biggest reward is being able to give back and make a difference. I have a passion for the local community and am proud to call Tamworth home. I aim to be re-elected onto the board to continue to make a difference for the members of Wests and to continue the great work the previous board has done in creating a successful, safe and respected club within our community, while growing the club and club facilities for all members.

John McClelland John McClelland was elected as director in 1985. Blazes Entertainment Centre was upgraded the following year and as John continued on the board various artists performed in the new showroom, including Paul Kelly and his band, promoting their new release album Under the Sun with hit single To Her Door.

3

In 1988, while on the board, Keno was established in NSW Clubs and in the years following John was elected Senior Vice President of the board. In 1991 Wests welcomed even more artists to the club, including Jimmy Barnes, with Keith Urban regularly playing in what was the Casablanca Lounge. The following years with Urban still a regular performer and Barnes returning every other year, the club also hosted Lee Kernaghan, Tommy Emmanuel, Hunters & Collectors and The Radiators.

It was during these years of major reconstruction for the club that John took up the position of President of the board. In 2003, Wests cleaned up at the ClubsNSW Awards for Excellence receiving five awards including the prestigious Club of the Year.

In 1994 Stage 1 of a $2.4 million full club refurbishment took place including a new central bar, dining room, coffee and pastry shop, lounge, cocktail area and amenities. Completion of Stage 1 included Banjos Family Restaurant, Neros, and Legends Central Bar. Stage 2 and 3, to be completed the following years, included Vegas Gaming Centre and the front foyer and façade of the club including a large reception area and bottle shop.

Musical highlights in 2002 included Human Nature, The Delltones and Wendy Matthews.

www.wtlc.com.au

2001 included an upgrade to Banjos Family Restaurant, Blazes Auditorium and introduced a new structure for the board of directors where 14 positions for director were reduced to 9.

In 2003 West Tamworth League Club Ltd amalgamated with Tamworth RSL Club and Wests’ Diggers was born. In 2004 there was talk of a $5 million renovation of Diggers with the grand opening taking place in the following years. 2005 brought Lee Kernaghan back to Wests and welcomed Jimeoin, The Waifs, Missy Higgins and Joel Turner.

In 2008, 2 x 335,000L water tanks were purchased at Wests as part of a Rainwater Harvesting System Project between the Namoi Catchment Management Authority and Wests, saving Tamworth over 2.5 million litres of water each year. In 2011 we celebrated our 50th Anniversary. Our carpark was upgraded into a multi-level facility in 2013, and 2014 saw Scully Park Regional Sporting Precinct take shape with the grand opening taking place the following year alongside construction of our 52 room hotel and alfresco gaming room. 2016 saw an amalgamation with the Tamworth Tennis Club, now The Courts @ East, the grand opening of the Mercure Tamworth and the completion of our two new outdoor areas at Wests, The Terrace and The Patio. For 31 years John has served as a deeply respected member of the Wests Board, and stood as president for 21 of those years. The success of the club is a testament to John’s

leadership. As such it is with great pleasure that we announce our next meeting room - opposite The Dennis Condon Room - will be named The John McClelland Room in honour of John’s work and dedication to Wests Entertainment Group.

We thank John for his dedication and support shown toward the club and wish him all the very best for the next chapter of his life. enjoy

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

WESTS GIVING TREE As a holiday centred around love, family and the rewarding act of giving, Christmas is a wonderful time to extend your generosity and give to people in need. In the six weeks leading up to December 25 Australian’s will spend $47 billion on Christmas, while 2.5 million Australians live below the poverty line, 603,000 of whom are children, and one in 10 Australians will report they cannot afford to buy enough food for the holiday season. More than 70,000 people will turn to The Salvation Army for support and hope. Salvos aim to provide 10,000 meals in 150 centres during Christmas week. As families struggle to afford food, presents are a definite luxury and so The Salvation Army also spreads Christmas cheer by providing gifts to families. Their rewarding work cannot be done without the support of the community. Once again we ask our local community to help us support The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal. A Giving Tree will be set up at Wests’ reception from November 3 until December 7. During this time we urge our members and guests to donate food and gifts to The Salvation Army’s Christmas cause. While every little bit counts the aim is to provide a gift, or gifts to the value of $30 per child, and food that can be used by families over the Christmas and New Year period. As such, non-

perishable food, preferably with a long storage date would be greatly appreciated.

Amy was a mum of three, and eight months pregnant, when her husband Ben died the week before Christmas two years ago.

Leah is a single mum with three children and does the best she can but sometimes she may only have $2 left at the end of each week.

There is also urgent need for gifts for Newborns, Toddlers and Boys and Girls over 12 this year. Some suggestions include safe toys, bunny rugs and feeder sets for babies between 0 – 3 years old. Gift vouchers are another great idea as they’re an ideal gift for older children and adults or for a parent who doesn’t want to miss out on the joy of personally purchasing their child a gift at Christmas. The Salvation Army likes to give the parents the opportunity to select a particular gift for their child’s unique personality and interest so we ask that the donations are not wrapped, though you are welcomed to include wrapping paper or gift bags for parents to use.

“Before I went to the Salvos I’d just about given up hope I could keep the boys. I simply had nothing left to feed or clothe them”

Christmas is a truly wonderful time of the year, let’s share the festive season with all, spreading the love and cheer to our local families who may be doing it tough this year. From all of us at Wests, we’d like to thank our members and guests for their support. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Kable Avenue Indoor Bowls This year membership for the Kable Avenue Indoor Bowls has been the largest it has ever been. Though their name is derived from their original host venue the Indoor Bowls now gather for friendly competition games every Sunday from 10am and Thursday from 1pm in Blazes Auditorium at Wests on Phillip Street. 26 members come together for a friendly competition bowl twice a week. The eldest competitor of the sporting meet is 98 years old who will celebrate her 99th birthday in December and the youngest 27. The richly diverse club is open to all members of Wests Entertainment Group. With all equipment supplied, an annual membership fee of $2 and a

fee of $4 a game it’s an affordable and enjoyable club to be a part of. All proceeds cover the yearly insurance and pay for prizes for the competition games. Said prizes tend to include every day essential household items – soap, laundry detergent and the odd tin of biscuits. It is groups like the Kable Avenue Indoor Bowls that contribute to the rich tapestry of the Wests community. If you’re interested in joining the Kable Avenue Indoor Bowls please call Colin Southwell on 0448 822 404 or Irene Bradbury on 6762 5432.

Our Tamworth First City of Light At 8pm on November 9, 1888 Tamworth Mayoress Mrs Elizabeth Piper used a gold key (pictured) to unlock a switch which turned on 21.5km of electric street lights making Tamworth the first town in the southern hemisphere to light its streets by municipally generated electricity. Replacing gas streetlights, 52 street lights with carbon filament lamps and 7 arc lights were powered by two 12 horsepower steam engines driving Crompton 230 volt 18kW dynamos. This achievement earned Tamworth the nickname ‘The First City of Light’. It took Melbourne another six years later, in 1894, to adopt electric street lights and Sydney didn’t follow until another 10 years after that in 1904. 1888 was a big year for Australia marking the centenary of European settlement, while Tamworth was also celebrating the 70th

John Fowler 12 horsepower compound Engine

In 1922 the power station moved to the corner of Marius and East Street. By 1954, the Tamworth Powerstation supplied the whole of North West NSW from Murrurundi, Quirindi and Werris Creek north to Manilla, Barraba, Armidale and Inverell and northwest to Gunnedah, Boggabri, Narrabri, Bellata, Moree and St George in Queensland.

of Electric Streetlighting in Australia. P-CCC acquired the site of the original 1888 power station, including the first Tamworth Municipal Electric Showroom building constructed in 1907. They also managed to acquire two genuine John Fowler cross compound undertype steam engines together with an operational boiler. The engines were restored, P-CCC also constructed two replica Crompton dynamos and arc lights for the Centenary. In 1988, a re-enactment of the switch-on took place with arc lights, dynamos and steam engines working from the original power station site. The 1907 showroom building was restored and fitting out as an electrical museum. The Tamworth Powerstation Museum was later donated to Tamworth City Council.

anniversary of explorer John Oxley’s discovery of the Peel River and the 38th year of being proclaimed a town. Following early November of the same year the town also laid claim to being the first Municipality in Australia with the courage to adopt the electric light for streetlighting purposes.

The Golden Key used to flick the switch

As successors to Tamworth City Council’s electricity undertaking, Peel Valley County and Cunningham County Councils (P-CCC) began making preparations for the Centenary

In 1938 an internally illuminated “Column of Light” Obelisk was erected at the site of the second Powerstation built in 1922 to mark 50 years of Municipal Electricity. We now know this site as the Quality Hotel Powerhouse. The “Column of Light” was refurbished in 2013. This November we celebrate our 129th year of electric street lighting.
