JASON LEE

There is definitely something to be said about a profession that involves rushing toward a scene everyone else is fleeing from. There is a special level of respect dedicated to people who day after day put their lives on the line in the service of others - Jason Lee is one such person. You will often see Jason in his Wests uniform manning the front desk of Wests and Diggers or behind the wheel of our member’s bus, but what many may not know is when Jason isn’t working at the club he’s most likely behind the wheel of the 508: West Tamworth firetruck in his fire and rescue uniform responding to an emergency call. After graduating high school and completing his carpentry trade, the 26 year old firefighter decided to follow a career where he is able to lend hands on help to those in need.

the recent Firefighting Championships held in Uralla where he came first in the North West zone in the one man ladder race. With the support of his girlfriend Casey Jones, his own determination and skill and the flexibility and understanding of his second employer, Jason is in a very heroic and admirable line of work, of which he is very good at, and we here at Wests, couldn’t be more proud of Jason.

Jason and the 508 are very passionate about promoting fire education within the community, enthusiastic about leading tours through their station and constantly encouraging community and school groups to reach out to their local fire station to boost fire safety awareness. After a year and a half as a firefighter Jason has more than proven himself, especially at

BANJOS PATIO OPENING SOON Concept Image. Children’s Play area.

Construction at the club has been the norm for the past three years. As soon as one project finishes another is born. 3

www.wtlc.com.au

We went from Scully Park Regional Sporting Precinct, to a renovation of the alfresco gaming area in Wests, followed by Mercure Tamworth which led into the complete gutting and renovation of Legends Terrace. While over at the Courts @ East we’ve been slowly plugging away at the interior of the club and brought a new alfresco gaming area to life. All the while Stage II of the Hotel Project continues with construction of the function centre. The next little project that’s coming together is the outdoor patio

adjacent to Banjos Family Restaurant. Banjos Patio will offer an outdoor modern dining alternative. The outdoor patio will be complete with a children’s play area accommodating the family unit who frequent the popular eatery. While the ongoing construction process seems never ending it opens our doors to exciting ventures in the food and beverage industry and wider still to the community of the club.

Look Who’s CookinG: Shenae Rekstad

Interestingly, Shenae didn’t always want to be a chef. Having finished her HSC Shenae was accepted to study Journalism at Charles Sturt University. She deferred for a year to work and earn money when a friend asked her to try out a Tafe course. The hospitality teachers at Tafe took to Shenae, as she did to the course. The encouragement of her teacher, and industry specialist, Cameron Falzon along with her own new found passion led Shenae to pursue a career as a chef 100 percent.

A great point of pride for Wests Entertainment Group are the staff employed at our three clubs. We were able to sit down with our newly qualified chef Shenae Rekstad, who at 20 years of age, has become a trade and Tafe qualified chef. It took her one year to complete what many hospitality students complete in three. Her class was the first in the New England region to run the intense year long course and from 20 students Shenae became the only fully qualified graduate. While studying the course Shenae supported herself juggling two jobs, going to class and fulfilling the additional requirements of unpaid practical assignments.

Gaining the approval of State Training Head Office to condense a three year course into one was a long tedious haul. For 6 months Shenae filled out piles of paperwork, went to various interviews, had countless case workers, had her supervisors and mentors write letters direct to state training until finally the perfect combination of an inspired case worker, a letter written by the Employee Relations Manager at Wests and a very determined Shenae led to State Training approving the request (finally!) and the goal oriented Shenae got to work. Having achieved her latest goal of becoming fully qualified and purchasing a house, the twenty year old also recently became engaged and now has her sights set on a very successful future, hoping to make Head Chef by 22. She has a very supportive family unit behind her, her grandparents in particular. Work research trips have been very beneficial and inspiring for Shenae, having returned earlier this year from a trip to Queensland with Wests management staff. She feels very optimistic about introducing exciting things to our eateries at Wests. We couldn’t be happier for Shenae and we wish her the very best in all her ambitions.

Thursdays at One free kids meal per adult purchasing a main meal. Children must be 12 years old or under and ordering from the kids menu. For a limited time only.

ON TAMWORTH’S LARGEST TV ON LEGENDS TERRACE @ WESTS SUNDAY OCTOBER 1

Troy Osborne Wests Supervisor

Graham Menzies Customer Service Manager

With little doubt that Graham has taken this opportunity to regurgitate something about the Roosters featuring in the grand final, winning and his man crush Cordner taking out the Clive Churchill medal; I have little hesitation in ruling them out, as they will choke once again during finals season (it must be tough being a Roosters supporter). Change the Roosters to Souths, Cordner to Burgess and you have Vicki’s verdict, her section may be relevant in 40 years time (the usual time South supporters wait for their next premiership these days), save yourself a read! Unless, of course common sense has prevailed, and I apologize! I’d love to throw Cronulla Sharks in the mix; however I don’t think there will be any NSW teams featuring this year. Melbourne Storm v Brisbane Broncos, With the Storm lifting the Provan-Summons Trophy 22-12. Cameron Smith will take out the Clive Churchill medal.

Roosters vs Storm in the grand final. No doubt the mighty red, white & blue of the Roosters will win 26-12. The Clive Churchill medal (man of the match) will go to Roosters captain Boyd Cordner. Storm will win the penalty count & that’s all. All records will be broken with attendance, sold out weeks in advance. It is the Chinese year of The Rooster after all!!! Go you good things!

Vicki Roberts Diggers TAB Attendant & Promotions Team Member (Bingo & Raffles)

The Man of The Match will be awarded to Cameron Smith.

The 2017 NRL Grand Final will feature Melbourne vs Penrith with Melbourne downing Penrith 29-18. The Clive Churchill Man of The Match will be Cooper Cronk .

Keith Clark Administrative Services Manager The 2017 NRL Grand Final will see Storm vs Cronulla; however a Storm vs Souths match would certainly draw a sell - out crowd (just being bunny)! The game will be electric with a lightning performance by the Storm & they will strike several bolts on the day to take home the premierships 16-14.

If only Souths were playing like it was 2014, October 5 at ANZ Stadium. Not to reveal my age but one can’t help but reminisce and hope that one day Bobby McCarthy along with his 1971 team make their long awaited comeback then the bunnies would come out of their burrows & certainly put the storm back in the clouds!

Annette Berthaly Wests TAB Attendant I would like to say my beloved Tigers but if I were picking the grand final for the wooden spoon I might have a chance. It would be great to see two Sydney teams make the Grand Final namely the Sharks & Roosters. The Sharks will be too strong and take a mighty bite out of the Roosters scattering feathers everywhere with the Sharks winning 27-12. Man of The Match will be awarded to James Maloney.

Sophie Brazel Beverage Team Leader This is simple! No need to over analyze, keep it simple! My favorite two teams, the Manly Sea Eagles and the Melbourne Storm. Although I believe Storms Quarter back is superior, I don’t think they are any match for the Eagles on the grass court (if it were clay, maybe different). The Eagles will take the first set in a tiebreak and never look back. For the Clive Churchill medal, I think the sweeper for the Eagles, Tommy Trbojevic will win. Tommy will keep a highline playing the offside rule to a T! When the umpire calls full time to the last period the score will be 36-24, go the Eagles! In Short- Manly 36 v Storm 24, Tommy Trbojevic- Clive Churchill Medal

Courtside Eats Our pop up food festival Courtside Eats was another great success at The Courts @ East. It was a brilliant sunny Sunday

afternoon well spent with family and friends. Mors Mobile Mini Farm was a big hit amongst the kids, while the adults went crazy for Black Betty BBQ smoked meats.
