Since its opening the Event Centre has hosted various functions including small meetings and gatherings, conferences, meet and greets and more recently a Winemakers Degustation Dinner to launch the room to dignitaries and business professionals in the events and tourism sector. The launch was a great success showcasing the many and varied types of events the room can host while simultaneously celebrating Australian wine and local cuisine. Wests’ Executive Chef Anton Strelchenko and his catering team outdid themselves serving a delicious five courses paired perfectly with four different wines and a dessert port from Treasury Wine Estates. Our Chief Food and Beverage Officer Peter Carlyle and his functions team should feel very proud, putting together a truly successful and positive event continuing to place Tamworth on the map for elegance and sophistication.

MONEY JACKPOTS IF UNCLAIMED

Wests’ Chief Food and Beverage Officer Peter Carlyle has been working tirelessly in his hole in the wall brewery on the grounds of West Tamworth League Club. The Royal Standard Brewery was introduced to the Tamworth market at BREWFEST 2017 and since then Peter has been perfecting the art of brewing; experimenting with different styles of hops, yeast and mash to bring some really delicious ales and pilsners to our taps at Wests and Diggers. Wests currently has the Pilsner and Australian Ale on tap with the Pilsner also on tap at Diggers. The process generally takes about a week. The brew, made of liquid malt extract, dry malt extract, hops, yeast and water is left to ferment in a temperature controlled room for 4 days. It is then moved into a cool room for 24 hours. After which a clarification agent is added to the brew and after another 24 hours another clarification agent is added. On the seventh day godliness happens – the brew is transferred into a keg, hooked up to the taps and delicious liquid courage is available for beer lovers to enjoy. There are different types of liquid malt extract, also known as mash, and different types of hops and yeast, these are the elements which determine the kind of beer the brew is going to be and how long it is going to take to ferment. It’s the sugar in the dry malted extract that determines the beer’s alcohol by volume (ABV). There are currently three brews fermenting, keeping up with the demand for the Australian Ale and the Pilsner whilst also introducing a Lager to the range. The NZ based commercial system Peter uses has attracted the attention of other avid clubs, pubs and hotels bringing representatives from Coffs Harbour and Armidale to see the equipment and stock in action. At the beginning of the Brewery launch Wests was going through 50L a week but now the demand has grown to 200 – 250L a week. Schooners are $4.50 for members. Also featuring on tap is a wide range of red and white wine from reputable brands like Squealing Pig, St Hubert’s, T’Gallant and Saltram. Wests boasts six different varieties of wine on tap, where Diggers and The Courts have two available. The tap wine has silenced most sceptics as people have warmed to the idea that freshness doesn’t always come from a bottle, made especially clear by the new market for wine in a can! The positive addition to our three bars in our three clubs has been received very well by our members and guests as the premium wine taste and experience has not been compromised. enjoy edition 26

Tamworth’s annual Rockabilly festival – Rockworth was held at Wests in May. It was a weekend full of Rock ‘n Roll music, dancing, memorabilia, fashion and workshops with live music and this year a car show. It was great to see our members and guests really get into the spirit of things taking the club back to the good ‘ole retro days for a weekend.
