FUNCTIONS AND EVENTS PROGRESS

max sharpe It’s been a dry old season here, you don’t have to look far to see the effects the drought is having nationwide, which is why it is so great to have people literally come from all over to help out our farmers, particularly in the New England region. To have John Farnham & Glenn Wheatley reach out to us and suggest putting on a benefit concert in Tamworth for our farmers is a great testament to the Australian spirit. John Farnham will bring with him Daryl Braithwaite, Guy Sebastian, Jon Stevens, The Veronicas, Andrew Farriss from INXS, Adam Harvey, Tim Wheatley & Nat Conway. Also joining the line-up is local Country Music icon Aleyce Simmonds.

Meanwhile, construction on our event centre is coming along nicely. You can read up on the progress inside on page 6. We’ve also got some other fantastic events coming up including the very popular BrewFest in November. Before then we have Australian indie-pop band Sheppard live in Blazes Saturday September 15, Street Eats at Diggers on Friday 21 September, a Gene Pitney and Roy Orbison tribute show at Diggers on Saturday October 6, the National Rugby Championships with NSW Country Eagles v QLD Country on Scully Park Saturday October 13, Courtside Eats at The Courts @ East Friday 2 November and a party out on the Terrace for Melbourne Cup Tuesday November 6. More information on these events can be found inside.

It goes without saying we predict the concert will be nothing short of a sell-out, breaking a whole new attendance record for Scully Park. Tickets are already on sale and selling very quickly so I would not put it off any longer to avoid disappointment. Page 22 has more details.

EVENTS centre

It’s been predicted that by December this year our events centre will be complete. The second stage of the $3.2 million hotel development includes its own foyer and reception area, complete with bathroom amenities, an office for staff, back of house utilities and access, and a function room with a capacity of approximately 300 people, complete with a bar and an outdoor courtyard. The events centre will be elegant and contemporary complementing the adjacent hotel while providing a practical and comfortable space. The foyer will be constructed similarly to the neighbouring hotel entrance, bringing in natural light through the use of large glass panels. The function room will be acoustically rated to ensure the space is suitable for concerts and conferences. Key milestones which are currently underway include electrical works, plasterworks, external walls and mechanical works.

Labour Day in Australia celebrates workers’ role in contributing towards the nation’s economy. It is an annual public holiday but its date varies across the states and territories.

The history of Labour Day in Australia spans over a century. It is an important annual event that remembers those who struggled and succeeded to ensure decent and fair working conditions. During the mid to late 1800s the working day was long and arduous, where some employees would work up to 12 hours a day, six days a week

NRC RETURNS TO SCULLY PARK The National Rugby Championship is returning to Tamworth with the NSW Country Eagles facing off with 2017 champions Queensland Country. Captained by our local rugby legend and Waratah prop, Paddy Ryan, the round 7 clash will take place Saturday October 13. The NSW Country Eagles made the 2016 grand final which they played under the captaincy of Paddy Ryan on Scully Park Regional Sporting Precinct. Unfortunately it was Perth Spirit that walked away with the win but when the Eagles met Spirit on the same ground the follow year they exacted their revenge with a 15 – 10 win.

key to the success of the NRC and it is great to see many teams take the initiative to spread their home matches around and give more fans the opportunity to watch some quality Rugby in their own communities.” The 2018 NRC season kicks off Saturday September 1 with Fiji v Melbourne in Suva and a grand final rematch between reigning champs Queensland Country and the Canberra Vikings in ACT. Round one will also see a mid-week NSW Derby with Sydney facing off with our very own NSW Country Eagles at Leichhardt Oval on Wednesday September 19.

Tamworth’s Scully Park welcomes the NSW Country Eagles back for a third time and look forward to cheering them on as they throw everything at QLD Country in the last round before the finals. Scully Park is one of four home grounds to the Eagles, joining Bellevue Oval in Armidale, Poidevin Oval in Goulburn and Wade Park in Orange.

The Tamworth, and wider New England community has always held rugby in the highest esteem, especially with our local boys on the field. It’s wonderful to see one of our own from St Nick’s going from strength to strength in the NRC and Super Rugby. We expect a large crowd at Scully in October cheering on Paddy and his teammates.

He demonstrates a passionate commitment to supporting grassroots rugby, especially around his hometown. BENEFIT CONCERT Sunday July 22 Blazes Showroom hosted a benefit concert and radiothon with all proceeds donated to assisting farming families in the New England Northwest Region. The initiative, headed by community radio station 88.9FM and Tamworth Regional Council was supported by Wests Entertainment Group, Salvation Army Tamworth, Country Women’s Association (CWA), Tamworth Business Chamber and the NSW Farmers Association. The concert featured artists from headline act Lee Kernaghan, Adam Harvey, Jayne Denham, Lyn Bowtell, Ashleigh Dallas and many more including John Krsulja, Splashpool, Ryan Morris, The Crosby Sisters, Dale Duncan, Marie Hodson, Pixie Jenkins and the list goes on. The concert and radio-thon raised over $55,000 which will be distributed

to the Salvation Army and the CWA who will then follow their necessary processes in place to ensure the support, funds and resources are directed to the appropriate farms and families, ensuring the needs of groceries, financial aid, stock feed etc. are being allocated accordingly. Wests Entertainment Group Chief Operations Officer Geoff Shanley is grateful Wests was asked to answer the call. “One of the greatest benefits of working for a club like West Tamworth League Club is being able to support our community and the individuals living in it. Living in rural areas can be tough at the best of times, our farmers are so important to us. They work so hard under incredible conditions and show resilience in the face of adversity every day. We are just so grateful we are able to help in every, and any way we can.”

Tamworth Quality Business Awards 2018 The Mercure Tamworth took home the award for Excellence in Customer Service in Hospitality – Accommodation at the recent Tamworth Quality Business Awards. Mercure Tamworth is frequently commended for its level of service and overall guest experience. Team members are encouraged to get to know the guests and anticipate their needs. This attention to detail is a great attribute in relation to excellence in customer service, and is a testament to the hardworking team at the four star hotel. Mercure Tamworth employs over 20 team members; all of whom are local excepting hotel manager, Rebecca Russell, appointed by AccorHotels. As the hotel continues to develop in operation, additional recruitment within the local area takes place. Under the ever growing umbrella of Wests Entertainment Group the staff at Mercure Tamworth abide by the number one goal - to provide outstanding customer service, with the number rule of using good judgement in all situations. It’s an authentic code of business to operate under.

“It means a lot to us to be able to share this with our hardworking team. We congratulate each and every staff member for this recognition in business excellence and thank them for their effort, commitment and loyalty.” The Noel Park Award is presented to an individual from the Tamworth region that has created an impact in the local business community through their ongoing commitment to the growth and improvement of services, industry or business. Wests’ CEO Rod Laing received the award in 2016. This year we congratulate our very own member of the board James Treloar. Former Mayor and current director of Wests Entertainment Group, Treloar received the award in recognition of his long service and support of the Tamworth region and local business community. Congratulations James!

“It is very humbling to win this award” said a representative of the hotel.
