on fridays WE WEAR PINK!

Tradies Support the Ladies is a breast cancer awareness initiative brought about by two tradies, Gary Sinclair and Mat Whitson, with the simple decision to wear pink on Fridays. The not for profit organisation was launched in Tamworth with the aim to increase men’s awareness of their role in supporting women in the identification and treatment of breast cancer. Both Gary and Mat shared their experiences of their wives’ breast cancer journeys and both wished they had known more about breast cancer; in particular the early signs & symptoms and what to look for in order to put one in a better position of detecting breast cancer early. Their conversation grew into a simple movement.

Through word of mouth and social media this simple but effective campaign has swept across Tamworth and into other areas of Australia with over 1,000 tradies buttoning up pink shirts every Friday. A variety of shirts are available for sale from Hip Pocket Workwear & Safety Tamworth, the team at Tamworth Hip Pocket will also embroider any shirt, or article of clothing and donate $10 of each sale to the Cancer Council. The boys have recently introduced the idea to the Hunter Region with Hip Pocket Wallsend and Maitland jumping on board to supply Novocastrian tradies with the conversation starters. It’s a wonderful initiative to support and easy to join by simply wearing a pink Tradies Support the Ladies shirt on Fridays.

The initiative isn’t necessarily about finding a cure or raising money. It’s more about showing support and raising awareness through education and conversation that can lead to early detection, which these days could mean the difference between having to undergo Chemotherapy and being able to avoid it. enjoy

WHat kind of

bingo bee are you? There are 10 Bingo sessions a week between Wests and Diggers, how many of these sessions do you attend each week? a) all of them b) most of them c) some of them d) very rarely When you attend a bingo session what upsets you the most? a) someone sitting in your seat b) someone shouting “Bingo!” before you c) someone shushing you d) your tea/coffee going cold while you daub numbers Which of the following is the main reason you attend Bingo a) Because all your friends go b) To win c) To chat and get the latest gossip d) Out of obligation When you play Bingo how often do you win a) sometimes b) never c) surprising often d) just the one time

JULY/AUGUST 2018

how did you score? Mostly A’s Bingo Queen Bee

You know everything there is to know about bingo. You know the rules to all the games and attend a session at least 6 times a week. You have lots of friends who attend bingo with you but you call the shots on where to sit, when to eat and how many books each person is allowed to buy. Everyone knows you, everyone likes you but everyone also wants to beat you.

Mostly B’s Bingo Working Bee

You try catch at least half of the weekly sessions, but you never win hard as you try. You are constantly on your last to second last number when “Bingo” is called by another person much to your sheer frustration and disappointment. You occasionally pray to the Italian God of Bingo ‘As I lay me down to slumber, all I need is one more number. When to the next game I go, I pray to those that I yell “BINGO!”’ – Bingo God has not yet answered your prayer.

Mostly C’s Bingo Busy Bee

You’re constantly looking at other people’s books to see if you’ve missed a number and how close they are to shouting “BINGO!” You have trouble keeping up with the numbers called as you’re constantly whispering to your partner about what your granddaughter’s up to at school. You have trouble keeping up with the rules for each game so you’re always asking questions much to the annoyance of the Bingo Queen Bees. Occasionally you win out of sheer dumb luck, whenever you shout “Bingo!” a Bingo Working Bee is sure to heave a very heavy, loud sigh and stare daggers at you muttering “she’s barely paying attention”. You’re there for the social aspect of it, catching up with your girlfriends and getting the latest gossip, winning is just an added bonus to put toward coffee for next time.

Mostly D’s Bingo Drone Bee

You’re a wallet with legs, your wife takes your money to play “Bingo!” makes you drop her off and wait in the car or in Legends Lounge by yourself. Occasionally she’ll let you come in for a session but after you won that one time you now know better than to intervene on her turf, it’s more drama and politics for an outsider than it’s worth. So you sit in Legends Lounge with a midstrength, or in Neros for a cuppa and a slice and wait, knowing you’ll have to listen to a play by play all the way home.

Have you experienced the Field Of Light? Now is a great time to head to the red centre to experience this magnificent piece of art. Internationally acclaimed artist Bruce Munro’s immersive installation, the Field of Light has been extended for a further period and will now remain in place until 31 December 2020 due to its success.

about the 4 Day Best of Uluru Itinerary

The award-winning exhibition, located at Ayers Rock Resort in the spiritual heart of Australia, opened on 1 April 2016 to critical acclaim, and has since exceeded all expectations proving to be a stand-out drawcard to the destination.

Experience everything Uluru and the surrounds has to offer with the top once-in-a-lifetime tours and activities on this 3 night / 4 Day Best of Uluru stay including:

“With such incredible demand, and high occupancy experienced throughout the year at the Resort, extending the Field of Light to 31 December 2020 will allow even more guests to enjoy this extraordinary experience,” said Voyages Executive General Manager Sales, Marketing and Distribution, Ray Stone.

“Since opening, more than 200,000 guests have been deeply moved by the Field of Light, it’s hard not to be. This further extension offers guests the opportunity to enjoy not only the spiritual nature of the destination, but experience it in a unique and mesmerizing way,” said Ray. The exhibition, aptly named Tili Wiru Tjuta Nyakutjaku or ‘looking at lots of beautiful lights’ in local Pitjantjatjara, is Munro’s largest work to date, with more than 50,000 slender stems crowned with radiant frosted-glass spheres over an area the size of nine football fields. These individually handcrafted stems, weighing a total 15 tonnes, travelled more than 19,000 kilometres on 32 international and domestic Qantas Group flights in early 2016 before arriving in Alice Springs. It is also the artist’s first work to be illuminated entirely through solar power. The spheres, connected via illuminated optical fibre, bloom as darkness falls. Pathways draw viewers into the artwork, which comes to life under a sky brilliant with stars.

They’re great storytellers, whether it’s an old yarn you’ve heard 20 times before, or reading a scary story to you by torchlight under the blanket & pillow fort they built with you.

They’re never too old to make a pillow fort.

BEANIES for brain

cancer On Friday June 8 West Tamworth League Club hosted a Mark Hughes Foundation Beanie for Brain Cancer fundraiser. The Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) is a Newcastle based charity formed by former NRL player Mark Hughes and his wife Kirralee in 2014 after Mark was diagnosed with Brain Cancer. Having realised how underfunded Brain Cancer was in Australia in comparison to other cancers Mr and Mrs Hughes’ Foundation sets out to raise much needed funds for research, to create awareness about Brain Cancer and to provide support to brain cancer patients and their families. Wests’ fundraiser called for staff and members to purchase and wear a MHF beanie. As you may be aware hats and beanies are not usually permitted inside the club with the exception of TCMF, and now June 8 2018. The first order of beanies sold out far quicker than expected as staff, members and guests were all enthusiastic about doing their bit to raise funds and awareness for brain cancer. In the end 470 beanies were ordered and received and as of Tuesday 12 June 458 beanies were sold, raising $9,160 from just the sale of beanies alone. The fundraising evening also called for donations, a Kommunity Keg and mulled wine raising an additional $305, making the total $9,465 so far. The Mark Hughes Foundation have already expressed their gratitude to the club for its initiative, writing on social media “Thankyou so much Tamworth Wests you have gone over and above to help our cause, thankyou all so much for the support. Had a great time up there a month or so ago when we were there for the Knights game”
