max sharpe It is with great pleasure that I step into the big shoes left by John McClelland. I cannot thank John enough for his dedication and service to the club over the last 32 years. As a testament to this, at our AGM the members present elected to make John patron of our club for the ensuing year.

The coming months promise to be very busy with the fast approaching NRL Telstra Premiership game between home team Wests Tigers and Newcastle Knights. While all reserved seated tickets in the two grandstands have sold out, general admission tickets are still available. We’re greatly looking forward to welcoming Benji Marshall back to the Tigers and look forward to seeing what he and the team can do against Mitchell Pearce and the Knights. Page 21 has more details on the Round 7 game. It’s wonderful to see our members and guests taking full advantage of the changes around Wests. The upgrade to the front façade of Wests was completed in time for TCMF 2018 and saw major crowds entering our club. Likewise it was good to see our new areas like The Terrace and The Patio being utilised, which has been assisted by the presence of our new misting system on The Terrace, making it a little cooler in the dreaded heat of this past summer. We look forward to the continued development of the Function Centre attached to the Mercure and Wests and the subsequent modern changes in design and clientele it will bring to our reputable club. This year Easter falls on the last weekend of March and the first Sunday of April. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families all well during the Easter period. For information on our opening times and members promotions during Easter please see pages 9 and 10. ANZAC Day this year will be the 100th year anniversary of the final year of WWI which ran from 1914 - 1918. While Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the Battle of Gallipoli as Australian and New Zealand troops marched together April 25 1915, the day honours all whom have, and continue to fight and serve in all conflicts past and present in the name of our great country. I trust you will commemorate April 25, 2018 with the upmost respect for our servicemen and women. Details of the local service times can be found on page 12. Wests Entertainment Group recently renewed an old relationship with the Tamworth Jockey Club through sponsorship of the Tamworth Cup. A Cup Calcutta will take place at Wests on the Saturday night before Mercure Tamworth Cup on Sunday April 29. More information can be found on the double page spread 17-18.

"I'm coming home," Benji Marshall told Fairfax Media last year. Marshall is expected to finish his NRL career with the club that began it over a decade ago. Tigers Head Coach Ivan Cleary named Benji Marshall one of the five Co-Captains of the Wests Tigers this season. Marshall shares the leadership role with 2nd Row Chris Lawrence, fellow Five-Eighth Josh Reynolds, Prop Russell Packer

and Lock Elijah Taylor. Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe congratulated the players on their appointment. Pascoe is also excited about bringing a season match to Tamworth saying "Rugby League has a long history in Australia’s regional communities and we’re proud to be playing a role in continuing this by taking a game to Tamworth,”

As my inaugural presidential report comes to a close I find myself greatly anticipating the coming months, (while making a mental note to book Smoky’s for Helen’s Mother’s Day dinner) I feel comforted in the knowledge that we move forward with the support of you, our loyal members.

Tamworth Ex-Telephonists SOCIAL GROUp A great point of pride for Wests is the way in which community and social groups see our venue as a welcome place to meet for a coffee, some lunch, or dinner and a few drinks. It’s a great feeling to know we have created a desirable environment for members of our community to gather together. One such social group is the Tamworth Ex-Telephonists, former employees of the Tamworth Telephone Exchange which closed Friday 13th February, 2004. 22 years ago Norma O’Brien organised a friendly catch up with her fellow retired telephonists at West Tamworth League Club and since then

the friendship group meets every 3 months at Wests. With a group of around 20 people attending the seasonal catch up many stories are shared and lots of laughs are had. Oh, to be a fly on the wall at those luncheons when you think about the changes this group of people have witnessed around our club and Tamworth as a whole. Recently, the group met at Wests to celebrate their dear friend, Phyllis Bylund’s, 100th birthday. Phyllis turned 100 on January 24.

29 years at wests GLENDA LOVELL As of March 9, 2018 our very hardworking Accounts Payable Glenda Lovell will celebrate 29 years working at Wests. Starting out in gaming, Glenda would work from 4pm – close Thursdays through to Saturday. Alongside her husband, Glenda was supporting 3 children under the age of 5 and found the work hours suitable to her family routine. Over the 7 – 8 years working in gaming, the hardworking Glenda and her colleagues always found the fun amidst the chaos of the busy club. It was a different time, and certainly a different club back then, not the family friendly club it is today, a bit more of a boisterous club. Glenda remembers when Jimmy Barnes played in Blazes and the dancefloor literally vibrated throughout the club until 3am. There were also some pretty shocking tidbits about the state of the gaming room in the wee hours of the morning and the different things left in the trays of the pokies that shall have to be left to the imagination. Glenda has worked 28 Country Music Festivals during her time at Wests. It would get so busy we’d have to close the doors because the large club simply couldn’t fit any more people in the building. By 1997 she was moved into banking to relieve a lady who went on holidays and never returned to work at the club. Our current Chief Operations Officer, Geoff Shanley was the Accounts Payable at that time. As time moved on Glenda became the Accounts Payable. She still possesses a great knack for finding the fun amidst the heavy workload - the dedicated staff are responsible for the accounts of Wests, Diggers, The Courts @ East and Mercure Tamworth. Accounts is a really great department at Wests, it’s full of people who are a joy to work with and whom have become friends and a great support for each other in and out of the workplace. We congratulate Glenda on this great achievement and thank her dearly for her hardworking dedication, which she has shown over the years.

Visual Arts and Poetry Honouring Our Returning Service Personnel

The 2018 Australian Spirit Exhibition is coming to Wests’ Diggers Grand Ballroom this April. For only two days 20 paintings and 3 sculptures accompanied by 23 poems will be on display from 1pm - 7pm Friday 5th April and again from 11am – 7pm on Friday 6th April. The Australian Spirit Project is a four year community collaboration, the exhibition for 2018 will consist of selected works from previous years as well as 20 new works with the intended focus on commemorating and honouring all whom have served our country. The artworks exhibited are the result of collaborations between local returned service personnel, visual artists and poets, with the assistance of Central Coast RSL Sub Branches, associated clubs, Vietnam Veterans Peacekeepers and Peacemakers Association,

artists, poets and documenting photographers & videographers. The information from the commemorative magazines of the past 4 years will be compiled into a hardcover book which will be offered for sale to libraries, galleries, war museums, schools and the public. These living stories are part of the fabric that binds our community and will be compiled into an archival hard cover book that will preserve our local history. To date, the Australian Spirit project has represented veterans who have served in WWI, WWII, Vietnam, East Timor, Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force, Afghanistan, The Red Sea, Malaya, Korea, Australian Women’s Land Army, Western Sahara and Rhodesia. These are just some of the incredibly moving portraits on exhibit at Diggers this April.
