Christmas Carols FOR THE FARMERS

max sharpe What a year it has been for Wests Entertainment Group. It has been a true honour to have served as your president this year. During the past 23 years, sitting on Wests’ board I have developed life-long friendships with my fellow board members, the staff at Wests Entertainment Group and you, our valued members. It is with the support of my wife Helen that I have chosen not to stand for re-election. As our Annual General Meeting (AGM) and 2018 Board Election approaches I encourage our full financial members to use the opportunity to have your say on who sits on your club board by voting. Information on your nominees, voting times and the AGM can be found on page 2.

FRIDAY CASH SMASH

I’ve really seen it all now with the recent Hay Mate benefit concert on Scully Park Regional Sporting Precinct. This year alone the precinct has hosted an NRL Premiership round, a National Rugby Championship round, soccer tournaments and grand finals, and now a major concert headlined by John Farnham, which was broadcast on national television. As we gear up for the end of the year our annual craft beer and food festival – BrewFest will also be held on the sporting ground. More information on BrewFest can be found on page 8.

Giving Tree

We are also nearing the completion of our final stage of the hotel development with the events centre to be opened in time for Tamworth Country Music Festival 2019. A number of acts are expected to perform in the brand new function room giving the acoustics and sound barriers a solid run to kick off 2019.

17

18

Toy Raffle

Our Christmas raffle series will commence from November 13. We’ll also be hosting our usual Toy Raffle and our Cash and Hams giveaways at Wests and Diggers in December. Tickets to the members’ only Christmas Trolley Hamper raffle will also be available for purchase. Our Christmas promotions can be found on page 18.

Members’ Christmas

While the drought stands to make the Christmas period even harder on the cheque book the club and the wider community are doing their best to support our local farmers and anyone who may be doing it tough at the moment. Wests Giving Tree is up again this year asking for donations of gifts and toys which will be forwarded onto the Salvation Army to distribute to local families in need. With the aim of raising morale, we are hosting Santa’s Breakfast for our local farming families on December 1 and Christmas Carols in Blazes that evening. More information can be found on page 15.

The Candidates Terry PSARAKIS

I am nominating for the board to hopefully continue the good work that has been achieved by the club over my 8 years as a director, 6 years as an elected board member and 2 years as an appointed director. I have held the position of vice president for the last 5 years. The Mercure Hotel, Scully Park Precinct & club expansion has all happened in the last 6 years. I am married to Karen and we have 2 adult children. I have lived in Tamworth for over 55 years. We have an accounting practice in Tamworth which has been operating for over 17 years. My interests outside of family and work is sport. I am on the NIAS board, chairman of Central North Cricket Zone, deputy chair of Country Cricket NSW and board member of Northern NSW Football. I believe strongly in giving back to the people/community that have helped me get to where I am today. This is also what Wests believe in… giving back to the community.

Stephen BARTLETT

Tamworth resident since 1988 Positions Held: - NSW Justice of the Peace - Director Centacare New England North West - Director Destination Country & Outback NSW Ltd - Member Tamworth Country Music Foundation - Member Tamworth Country Music Hall of Fame Committee Qualifications: - Bachelor of Business - Master of Local Government Management - Master of Local Government & Environmental Law - Diploma in Legal Studies If elected as a director, I have the experience and qualifications to contribute to the strategic management and operational excellence of the governing body of West Tamworth League Club Ltd. It would be my unwavering aim to work closely with fellow directors and the executive management team to advance the public image, professionalism and quality of service of the venues of Wests, Wests Diggers and The Courts @ East. The Wests Entertainment Group is acknowledged within regional NSW as an organisation with an enviable reputation for providing high quality venues and excellent sporting, social and entertainment services to members and the wider community. I wish to contribute my experience and insight as a director of such a quality and community based public organisation as the West Tamworth League Club Ltd for the betterment of members and the community.

Jayne McCARTHY

My husband and I served in the Royal Australian Navy for approximately 20 years each. Eight years ago we moved as a family from Sydney to Tamworth so my husband could start a new business. Business is going great and I am employed in fulltime work with St Vincent de Paul Society. Since moving to Tamworth I have been heavily involved with a number of Tamworth community organisations, am currently vice president of Tamworth RSL Sub-Branch and deputy chair of the Northwest Regional Executive Committee of NSW Scouts. I have come to love Tamworth and am proud to develop community interests and see Tamworth grow. I believe as a woman and a mother of two boys, I can contribute a fresh and energetic point of view to help increase the clubs standing in the Tamworth community.

VOTING SYSTEM

A “first past the post” voting system applies to this election.

METHOD OF VOTING

You may submit your vote in person only.

Robert BOTH

Robert has been a member of Wests Entertainment Group since 1975. Born in Tamworth and owned and operated, RG & EM BOTH Dental Laboratory since 1976. He retired in 2013. Has served in the local community for 20 years through Scouts, Wires and Apex, also as a director for two years on Tamworth Services Club board in the early eighties. Robert’s interests include fishing, model railways and of course his family. Robert has been on Wests’ board for the past 20 years, which has been a great privilege and a pleasure. He is enjoying seeing the Wests Group going from strength to strength. Married to Ellen and has two children, Jon and Karen. Robert would again ask for your support, to enable him to continue his work, and see the club grow in the future.

Dennis CLAPHAM

My 15 year old granddaughter encouraged me to nominate as she considers that I shouldn’t squander my skills and experience but put them to good use in the club’s evolution and strategic planning. I have been a member of West Tamworth League Club for over 30 years and past member of Tamworth RSL Club. Previously the business/services manager at Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School, and director on the Bursar’s Association of NSW Board. For the past 10 years, treasurer/director of the Security Providers Association of Australia Ltd (SPAAL). Since 1995, director of the 21 Construction Regiment RAE Association, the unit in which I served my military career. Also, an active member of Tamworth RSL Sub-Branch, a Justice of the Peace, member of NSW Justices Association and Northern NSW Federation of Justices of the Peace, volunteer at TRC Help Desk. Currently a Licensed Risk Management and Compliance consultant and member of the Risk Management Institution of Australasia. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

BrewFest 2018 will be our biggest line up of brewers, wineries and distillers to date. The usual line up of favourites will be joined this year by small brewers commuting from far and wide. From the pristine beaches of Port Stephens, Forster/ Tuncurry, Port Macquarie, and up to Byron Bay we’ve got Murray’s Brewery, Coastal Brewing Co, Hops & Tales and Byron Bay Brewery heading over the hills to our country town. Bucket Brewery will also be taking the winding road over the mountain to Tamworth from Kempsey Macleay, while Dobsons Distillery comes to us from Kentucky and Great Hops from Armidale, who may run into New England Brewing Co making their way from Uralla. Meanwhile we’ve got Tumut River Brewing Co coming to us from the Riverina region of NSW on the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. They might run into Andy the Landy who’ll be loaded up with Yenda and Pressman’s Cider from the small town north-west of Wagga Wagga and east of Griffith, while Pioneer Brewing Co make their way to us from Bowan Park, nestled between Orange, Bathurst and Cowra.

$80 VIP $40 EARLY BIRD 10 TOKEN TICKET

$45 10 TOKEN TICKET AFTER NOVEMBER 11

$10 DESIGNATED DRIVER TICKET (NO BEER TOKENS, ENTRY AND 2 FREE SOFT DRINKS)

CHILDREN U18 FREE BUT MUST STAY IN THE COMPANY OF A RESPONSIBLE PARENT OR GUARDIAN AT ALL TIMES.

Not quite that far south Young Henrys will be making the trek from the bohemian suburb of Newtown in Sydney’s inner west. They might run into Central Coast based brewery Six String Brewing on the F3. The road to BrewFest 2018 may be long and arduous for some but there’ll be an abundance of beverages, food and activity to make it all worthwhile. Our very own Royal Standard Brewery will be housed in an inflatable pub, think Oktoberfest beer hall but smaller and erected by air. We’re also bringing a life size, adult friendly, hungry, hungry hippos competition to the precinct with an inflatable ring whereby 4 contestants are strapped onto a bungy string and must run and grab as many balls as they can before being flung back to their corner. We’ll also have the usual staples, giant Jenga, table tennis, darts and bean bag toss. Our foodie friends won’t be disappointed with the selection of eats that will be available at the beer and food festival. A range of burgers and gourmet finger food will be available for purchase. There’ll be individual grazing plates, pork ribs, pork belly pieces, wedges, loaded fries with your choice of toppers, nachos, arancini, cheese burger spring rolls and loads more. Pictured are the bacon and cheese arancini with cheese sauce, our grazing plates, Jack’s Creek baguette and the Herb & Mayo Burger. We don’t know what we’re more excited about, the gin, the wine, the beer, the food or the games. It’s going to be a great day out! Tickets still available online, over the phone or at Wests’ Ticket Box.

ON THE ROAD WITH CHRIS WATSON

You don’t need an excuse to “experience it” or head north in Winter but the Broome Cup is a great excuse if you are looking for one. Perfect weather, a perfect location and exciting racing on a unique surface and a true once in a lifetime Australian Experience. That’s just a taste of what makes punters, fashionistas and tourists flock to Broome for what is fast becoming one of Australia’s most popular racing carnivals. It has everything you would expect fashions in the field, an electric atmosphere and XXXX Gold. Broome’s oil-based dirt track is carved out of bushland at picturesque Gantheaume Point, surrounded by the Indian Ocean and a short distance from the famous Cable Beach.

With Chris Watson Travel on an exclusive small group journey, 7 night tour including: Flights, Sightseeing, Accommodation, The Broome Cup & More!

Broome Cup Day brings together the local community and visitors who will travel far and wide to be involved in the biggest social event of the year. The 2200m XXXX GOLD BROOME CUP brings horses, trainers and jockeys to Broome all vying for the $150,000 prize. Fever pitched excitement precedes each race throughout the day, with punters being entertained by live music, local performers and fashion on the field finals. The post race party extends into the evening with Two-Up a drawcard for many race goers. Be sure not to miss this unique racing experience. The balmy, tropical climate offers the perfect escape from the cold of winter, with interstate visitors also taking advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the idyllic surrounds combine the cup with travel and make a holiday of it. Take the opportunity to visit Broome, Cable beach and more.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

A Magical & Giving Christmas for our Farming Families Wests Entertainment Group is teaming up with a marketing company based in Sydney, RegProm, to provide a free Christmas experience for our local farmers. The Salvation Army will be assisting with the initiative in bringing local farming families to a Christmas Breakfast held in Blazes and an Evening Christmas Concert. The families will be treated to a visit from Mr and Mrs Claus & their elves, Clara’s Tale of the Nutcracker, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer & Friends and even a cameo from Paw Patrol. While we’ve had a few downpours recently, our farmers are still facing the reality of drought every day. Not only has there not been enough rainfall to break the drought but it’s also too late to fix the damage already done from those extremely dry months. Crops that did not take due to lack of rainfall or those which were never planted due to the dire forecast means there will be nothing to harvest in the summer. The festivities, which are to take place December 1st, aim to boost morale during these difficult times, giving the opportunity for our hard working farmers to celebrate Christmas with their family and join in the festive spirit.

MERCURE

Monday to Friday 6.30am – 10am Saturday and Sunday 7.00am to 11am Open to the Public Enter through Mercure reception
