A Letter from The Gateway Environmental Initiative After five years of hard work punctuated by delays, the Gateway Environmental Initiative (GEI) is on track to purchase the site of a future nature center next to Washington Park. We have achieved some significant milestones: • • •

In June 2012, the GEI was recognized as a 501(c)(3) from the IRS, which opens up many funding opportunities. Last November, we signed a purchase agreement with East Coast Capital to purchase the site at a reasonable price, closing in late 2013. We have started an intensive fundraising campaign to raise the purchase price, filing grant applications with foundations, corporations, and a state agency.

In the meantime we have been lobbying the city for support and doing environmental education outreach in the neighborhoods along Salem Creek. The most successful outreach program so far is the Winston-Salem Family Nature Club, which holds monthly outings for families with preschoolers. While we are focusing now on land acquisition, we are thinking ahead to when we can develop the site as an urban nature preserve, where bird and butterfly habitat, natural playscapes, trails, and outdoor classrooms will create opportunities for people of all ages to connect with nature. By liking our Facebook page or signing up for e-mail invites, you will hear about the nature walks and other events, and learn how you can become part of this exciting new natural resource in our neighborhood! the history of WEST SALEM

700 South Green Street

Indeed it was! According to Michael Bricker, this is a commercial, storefront style building constructed circa 1920. It was first home to the Grandville Grocery Store. In the 1940s, it became Kinney's Food Store until it closed in 1973. The Kinney’s were residents of West Salem. 700 South Green Street was converted into apartments and is now a private residence. Update: Last month we featured the home of Marilyn Ruff Clemmons on Poplar Street. We are very sorry to say she has since passed away. We extend our condolences to her family, friends and neighbors.

Neighborhood Yard Sale!

The Association wants to know if you would like to participate in a neighbhoroodwide yard sale ? Instead of bringing your items to a central location as done in the past, we would like to try having the sale in our own yards. In exchange for advertising as well as food and music afterwards, we only ask that you donate 10% of your proceeds to the neighborhood association. It’s a great way to clean out our homes and support the association at the same time! Up for it? Email us to be included: (or call 782.7805) . We’ll add you to the map!
