Black box theaters are renowned for their versatility. While concerts, dances, and theatrical plays are traditional uses for a theater, West Sacramento's Black Box Theater is a space for traditional and innovative uses alike. Workshops, lectures, panel discussions, film events, banquets and award shows, live streaming, and recorded video production, have all taken place at this creative space on the second floor of the West Sacramento Community Center. This imaginative, interchangeable theater space fulfills and adds atmosphere to the needs of the events held within. An intimate venue, the Black Box meets the ideals for smaller productions and special events alike.

The City’s rentable live theater space is available for concerts, dances, plays, musicals, and other performance events. The amenities include a full lighting catwalk, 100 dimmers, 125 instruments, an 11 station dressing room with a restroom and space for larger casts, plenty of prop storage space, video and audio monitoring, backstage and control room stations for stage management, a wired intercom system throughout the theater, movable seating, and a comfortable lobby. Both emerging and professional artists utilize the space to share new works. Each year a variety of exhibits are held in the space including original group exhibits, the KidZone and Club West Youth Art Show, as well as solo and group exhibitions. The West Sacramento Art Guild holds an annual exhibition since the Community Center’s opening in 2011. The Guild also has constant presence with the display on the “gallery wall” outside the enclosed space, which shows off its members vast talents and subject matters, rotating monthly and keeping the interior especially colorful.

PARK RENTALS

Parks are for Enjoyment!

Organized use requires authorization from Parks & Recreation

What’s an organized use?

• Sports

• Special Events

• Bounce Houses or Tents

• Parties or Picnics using park amenities

Do I need to rent a park for a basic picnic of 25 people?

No, a group of 49 people or less will not require a park rental as long as there are no amenities requiring a rental. This includes but is not limited to bounce houses, tents or amplified sound. Otherwise you can just show up & use any available area, provided it has not been rented by another party.

How can I verify if a park is available for rent? Call the Parks & Recreation Department at 916-617-4620 to see if the park/picnic area you want is available for rental.

What is the park rental process?

All rentals require a minimum 30 days notice. Turn in a completed Park Rental Application to the Parks & Recreation Department. In certain circumstances, a Special Event (SE) Notification or SE Permit may be required. Both forms can be downloaded from the city’s website or picked up at the Community Center or Recreation Center.
