Retired members supporting a recent campaign to defend free bus passes You wouldn't wait until your house was burning before getting insurance would you ?.. But that’s what some people do when it comes to protecting their job They don’t worry about being a member of a union which can offer support, advice and protection until they need it, until they are being treated unfairly or being disciplined or losing their job. Then they want to join and get full support UNISON has rules about new members and representation . We have those rules because to give new members full access to UNISON support from day one or for events that happened before they became members just isn't fair to existing members who in some cases have been members for 5,10, 20,30 years and whose support and subscriptions have built our union into what it is now. So don’t leave it too late and be disappointed when you most need a union , join us now while you think about it ! Join.unison.org.uk

In 2017 the Tory government introduced legislation that denied workers the right to strike unless 50% of those eligible to vote do so. Despite this, UNISON members are increasingly fighting back against job cuts, attacks on terms and conditions and outsourcing by holding successful strike ballots and going onto defeat these attacks In our own region Birmingham Care wrkers showed the way forcing Birmingham Council to withdrawe attacks on their terms and conditions . Members in Sandwell claimed victory after securing a substantial wage rise following a dispute over job grading. Birmingham University members are currently taking action against low pay . Across the country UNISON branches are wining strike ballots by significant amounts and in some cases winning victoires without even having to strike Branches which have won significant strike votes Princess Hospital –domestic workers outsourcing West Dumbarton -Social workers workload Wigan Mental health workers Glasgow Local Government branch equal pay Bradford Hospital anciallary staff –outsourcing Dundee Council workers Birbeck college The Envirement Agency branch Dunstable Hospital Frimley Hospital –outsourcing They are all showing that UNISON members have had enough , that they are prepared to say “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH” and stand together
