WEST KORTRIGHT CENTRE, INC. A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 2020 was not what we expected, to say the least. Two weeks into my tenure, we were under lockdown. Over the course of the ensuing months, we reluctantly dismantled our 45th season while scrambling to create contingency plans - many of which would ultimately be canceled as well. Despite the curveballs 2020 threw at us, including a lightning strike that damaged our steeple and a slew of equipment, we managed to successfully shift gears and adapt to the evolving circumstances. On the virtual front, our staff of three, and an amazing crew of instructors, presented a youth reading workshop of Shakespeare’s lesser known works, and forged ahead with our 33rd annual Shakespeare in the Valley workshop, which concluded with two zoom performances. We also hosted a number of virtual workshops for adults and a performance by the Afro-Cuban band OKAN. These online events allowed us to expand our reach to an estimated 11,300 households, including viewers in Ontario, Massachusetts, Florida, New Jersey, Illinois, California, Cuba, the British Virgin Islands, and Guatemala. When things began to open up, we worked with state officials to safely organize a garden tour, a series of in-person youth art workshops in partnership with OSMOS Station, and a drive-in concert featuring Amy Helm. We also used this past summer as an opportunity to devote our energy to preserving and improving our historic building and its grounds. After receiving a Preserve New York grant in 2019, a building condition report was concluded by Chianis Anderson Architects, which recommended that we reinforce the Centre’s roof. Besides repairing the steeple damage caused by the lightning strike, we were able to shore up the rafters of our roof. We also broke ground on a new outdoor pavilion and handicap-accessible blue stone pathway. We plan to finish the pavilion and path this spring in time for our 2021 season. This will be a tremendous asset in expanding access and outdoor programming in our pastoral valley, and will be particularly valuable this summer to safely present performances and accommodate our attendees. All of this would not have been possible without the dedication of our staff and board, our volunteers, audience members, and anyone who gave their time, talents, and funds. In particular, I want to thank our members, donors, corporate sponsors, stalwart local foundations, and the New York State Council on the Arts for their unyielding support this past year. This institution is resilient, but not without the people that support it, and you all showed up in a huge way. This was a difficult time for all of us, but your support made it tenable. Thank you for keeping us strong and vibrant. 7.

MINUTES OF THE 2019 ANNUAL MEETING OF THE WKC MEMBERSHIP—MARCH 8, 2020 MILL POND INN & TAVERN, JEFFERSON, NY The meeting was called to order by President Liz Searles at 3:05 PM, who welcomed everyone and thanked them for attending on this beautiful, sunny day. Liz thanked Executive Director, Amy Helfand, for all of her dedication and hard work in updating the Centre. She introduced our new Executive Director, Patrick Barnes and addressed the restructuring of our staff with Caitlyn Davey as Assistant Director and Sarah Weigel as Administrative Coordinator. After verifying that a quorum was present, Minutes of the 2018 Annual Meeting were approved as reported. The 2019 Financial Report was given by treasurer, Danny Birnbaum, who highlighted revenues and expenditures, grants, fundraising and the endowment and expressed gratitude for everyone’s support. Thanks were also given to Helen Nershi for her continued guidance with the financial workings of the Centre. Amy Helfand recapped her time at the WKC stating that she was energized after meeting with Liz in Soho. Right from the beginning she knew she was ready to take the leap. Her “Mission Impossible” to take over after Martha was challenging, but she left her shoes next to Martha’s and now Patrick will do the same. Amy expressed the incredible privilege it has been and thanked Allan and Annie for curating the gallery and Aree and Alex for sound. Working in a collaborative spirit in the office with Caitlyn and John, Amy is forever grateful for their knowledge and willingness to take on new ideas. With support from the Board, colleagues, friends and supporters we were able to forge forward – starting a Songbird series for children and families, expanded theater workshops, and a ton of work behind the scenes – new website, new ticketing software, database – to allow human and financial resources to go much further. The Board is finishing a strategic plan with Andrew Marietta which will map out a path for the future. Organizational and staffing plans are coming together with the Board and staff collaborating to move the Centre forward. It has been a good year with grant writing – Preserve New York – provided us with a Building Conditions Report which will guide us and move us forward to complete projects on our historic space. With bittersweet emotions, Amy will be moving on, expressing her happiness that Patrick came into our lives – young, lively, Master’s Degree in Arts Administration and he even likes spread sheets. We will be happy to see how he moves the Centre forward. Amy thanked everyone for their patience, guidance and friendship with many thanks to Liz for all of her help. A great season has been planned! 2.
MI N UT ES OF T HE 2019 AN NUA L MEET ING (continued)
A motion to approve the actions of officers and Board of Directors taken on behalf of the corporation in the previous year was made by Carl Arnold and seconded by Gary Stephens. Motion carried. Nominees for re-election to three-year terms: Bruce Habeggar and Rachel Watson. Nominees for election to three-year terms: Jen Johnson-Kuhn and Jenine Osbon. All were approved by acclamation. Patrick Barnes, new Executive Director, was introduced and expressed his gratitude for being home. It continues to be an outlet where we can step back from our day to day and connect with our neighbors. Thank you to everyone for making this a home and for this legacy that together we can continue to push forward. Clara Clack, the “Auction Queen,” spoke and encouraged everyone to save and donate their items for the silent auction/rummage sale at the Fair on Labor Day weekend. The Dorothy Kelso Henderson Award for distinguished long-term service to the Centre was presented to Helen Nershi for her years of service and dedication to the Centre.
