West Hartford Leisure Services 24-25 Fall/Winter Brochure

FROM OUR DIRECTOR

It is a remarkable year for milestones. Rockledge Golf Club turns 100, and Westmoor Park turns 50. Various celebrations will highlight each facility’s accomplishments.

Rockledge Golf Club

Rockledge Golf Club’s Centennial Year began by welcoming Josh Moses as our new golf professional. Josh not only brings golfing and teaching talent, but also a business acumen that is already evident at the refurbished Pro Shop. He joins a team of outstanding staff, led by Superintendent Tim Nadeau. Tim and Josh combine forces to provide a top-tier golfing experience. The beautifully landscaped and meticulously maintained par 72 course offers many amenities. It will soon feature a new driving range, which is currently under construction.

The Centennial Celebration will be held on Friday, September 6 at Rockledge Golf Club. The event will feature a performance by Lonesome Eddie and the Bird Dogs, as well as tasty tidbits provided by the Rockledge Grille.

What began as a 14-hole course carved into a rocky, gentleman’s farm in 1924 evolved into an award-winning municipal course, considered one of the best in the State. We hope you’ll join us for a toast or a round of golf! For more information go to Rockledge’s web page.

Westmoor Park

Founded in 1974, Westmoor Park is West Hartford’s environmental, agricultural and horticultural education center. Led by park naturalist Doug Jackson, Westmoor offers nature programs for schools, groups and individuals, miles of trails and, as of this year, a certified, Level II Arboretum – one of only three in the State, and the only one in Hartford County. It truly is a hidden gem.

Westmoor Park will celebrate a day-long Fiftieth Festival on Saturday, October 19. The day commences with a fun run, and includes a re-dedication ceremony, time capsule burial, family festival, and a picnic dinner and square dance. Come kick up your heels! For more information, go to Westmoor Park’s website.

As we jump into fall and winter with gusto and frenzied carpooling, take the opportunity to make magnificent memories. Take a walk at Westmoor. You won’t regret it.

Enjoy!

Radical Robots

Radical Robots reinforces the concept that science and technology go hand in hand. Children discover how robots work in our place and are introduced to several real-life examples such as the Canadarm. Children move through learning centers to test and differentiate between robots, automatons, and remote-control devices. They learn how robotic devices use sensors to learn about their environment. Children build and take home a mechanical robot hand.

Optical Illusions

Children are introduced to the concepts of refraction, science of optics, and biology associated with sight. The instructor uses a wide variety of optical illusions like the mirror mirage, twisting coils, and convex and concave mirrors to demonstrate how physics can trick our eyes. Children use erasable crayons to create a series of laminated paper illusions and explore the reflections of various mirror forms.

Wicked Wild and Wonderful Art

In this totally unique art-venture, use oil pastels to draw hilarious self-portraits while imagining yourselves as Minions (from the movie Minions). Create colorful clay tiles with terrific texture using some unexpected tools: seashells and pasta. Finally, explore the art of decoupage while designing and decorating large paper mache item.

The smaller and heavier Futsal ball allows the player to more easily command the ball and leads to an increase in confidence. Participants will be in the ECC gym and they should wear active clothing, sneakers, shin guards, and bring a water bottle and futsal ball (if they have one). Please bring a nut-free lunch and two (2) snacks in an insulated lunch box.
