Death of a racehorse Continued from Page 1 Mr Biddle said he had told neighbours of the shooting and was now moving other mares to other paddocks for safety. Cows are being relocated to roadside paddocks. He said he had been with the horses late on Friday, feeding them hay to keep them warm in the predicted freezing temperatures. He said the killer would have had to cross several electric and barbed wire fences to get to the horse which was shot with a hollow point bullet and possibly “dead before it hit the ground”. “She was a lovely mare and would have come to the fence to meet her killers,” he said. “She did not deserve to be killed in this manner. These are cowards who knew what they were doing. “If you hear someone claiming that they killed a horse recently, let the police know so that we can prevent this happening again.”
A search using a metal detector later on Saturday failed to find the spent cartridge, suggesting the killer had removed it to cover his tracks. “These types of people get what they give in the end,” Mr Biddle said. “Cowards that creep around in the dark of night to kill a beautiful mare need to be taken off the streets. “To kill a horse is not good, but to kill such a lovely mare is appalling.” The thoroughbred won several races in Victoria before being retired five years ago. She had since had three foals, two being multiple winners, and a weanling filly on the ground. Mr Biddle said Hastings police, who attended the scene, had “assumed the person or persons involved went to some lengths to kill the mare”. “The kill shot was professionally executed by someone that clearly knew how to kill a horse,” he said. Anyone with information should call Hasting police on 5970 7800.

Woolies cash snatch A MAN ran off after snatching $1000 in notes from the register at Woolworth’s Somerville store 4.30pm Friday. Senior Constable Julia Starkey, of Hastings police, said the offender (pictured), aged in his 30s, asked the cashier to change some coins and then appeared to deliberately drop them while the cash register was open. When the cashier bent down to pick them up he allegedly reached over and grabbed a handful of notes and ran from the store. The offender was filmed on CCTV entering the store, in Eramosa Rd, several times before the heist. “He’s gone in and looked around a few times and then left and come back smelling strongly of tobacco,” Senior Constable Starkey said. “No one was physically harmed in the incident but the cashier is shaken up about it.” The man is described as Caucasian, short brown hair, “pale and sickly” complexion, slim-to-medium build, wearing a fawn coloured zip-up jacket, round-neck brown jumper, blue jeans, discoloured white runners and black backpack.

‘Lucky’ driver escapes flip from freeway A MAN was lucky to avoid serious injury when his car veered of Mornington Peninsula Freeway, flipped, and ploughed into trees late Friday night. His Toyota Aurion 2006 (pictured) left the road as it was being driven south towards Dromana. A wheel was torn off a wheel and the car was extensively damaged when it crashed upside down in dense roadside vegetation. Police believe the 26-year-old driver from Dandenong may have fallen asleep before the accident, near the BitternDromana Rd turn-off. Sorrento SES officer David Lammers said his crew were called to the scene at 8am Saturday “to remove some trees
blocking a car in”, as police had regarded a Friday night salvage as too dangerous. “They had to remove excess trees and branches from around this vehicle and work with the tow truck driver to extricate the vehicle from the trees,” Mr Lammers said. Sergeant Danny Lean, of Rosebud police, said the CFA was also called out as the car was gas powered and there were concerns the tank could explode. “We made inquiries and spoke to the brother and the driver has been interviewed. The driver was able to get out himself – he was very lucky. “He can expect to be charged on summons with careless driving.”
