Dan Antonucci PGA Certified Professional We are blistering through the golf season! July is here and August is in the rearview mirror. Looks like we as a country have the coronavirus pandemic on the steep downhill slide, hallelujah! I have to admit, the usual August burnout is hitting me already. Either we have been extremely busy at my Club or I am getting too old for the pace. I will take the busy part as my excuse!

Our WNYPGA Tournament schedule is past the halfway point for the season. I Dan Antonucci, appreciate the Professionals who compete and congratulate the tournament PGA Certified winners. We should all give a “WNYPGA Thank You” to the Sponsors who back our Professional events. We couldn’t do it without them. Please, if you are playing in an event and the sponsor is on site, walk up to them, shake their hand and thank them for their support. That will go a long way with the sponsor!

On Monday July 26th, some fellow PGA Professionals and myself will be conducting and instructing at the annual “Clubs for Kids” Golf Program in Delaware Park. This event has been ongoing for close to 40 years. It is held in conjunction with the Buffalo PAL. We will have up to 70 inner-city youths attend the program. I am asking for more volunteers from my WNYPGA Professional peers for this heart warming golf clinic. You will be asked to arrive at 8:30am and we will be done, no later then 12 noon. You will earn MSR points for your time. If you would like to participate, please call me at 716-745-3329 ext. 202 and I can give you the full details.

SECTION NEWS Mike Mancari (Wild Wood Country Club) Meet our up and coming Professionals!

1.

What’s your original hometown?

Henrietta, New York.

2. How long have you been in the PGA program?

This is my third year in the program.

3.

What is your tenure at Wild Wood Country Club and have you had any other jobs?

This is my third year working at Wild Wood Country Club, but I have been a member playing here at Wild Wood for my entire life. I have not had any other jobs in the golf industry.

4. What and who inspired you to get into the golf industry?

I would say my dad, Dave Mancari, and Mike Sweazy inspired me to get into the golf industry. Ever since I was a kid, my dad has wanted me to find a career in the golf industry. He knew how much I loved the game and wanted me in a career I was passionate about. Mike Sweazy was someone I looked up to as a golfer when I was a little kid, we both played at Wild Wood growing up and he also worked there. Eventually he would become Head Professional, and he helped me a lot with my golf game. Now he is the owner of Wild Wood, and he is the one who offered me the opportunity to get into the golf industry. To see his journey from bag boy to owner of Wild Wood firsthand was really inspiring. It showed me that hard work and dedication does pay off in the golf industry and reaffirmed it would be a great career for me. Now, to be working for Mike at the Country Club I grew up playing at is a special opportunity that I feel lucky to have.

5. What are your responsibilities at the club?

I oversee the Pro Shop staff and outside staff; I hire and schedule everyone who works on the golf side of the business. Also, I am now running the member events/tournaments as well as most of the charity events we host at Wild Wood. I’m responsible for the junior golf camps and events at Wild Wood as well.

6. Are there any fun programs you have initiated for the golfers at Wild Wood Country Club?

This year we are starting a Kid’s Night on Monday nights. The Kids Night will be for parents and children to come and play a 5-hole scramble together. It will start with a 30-minute clinic followed by 30 minutes of practice time or contests that are related to the clinic. Then we will do a 5-hole scramble (parent and child team) with a shotgun start. When all the teams get in from the scramble, we will have an ice cream bar for everyone who participated.

Last winter I started a 2-Man indoor golf league that was open to members and the public. It was a 5-week league where teams had to play five 9-hole rounds anytime within those 5 weeks. The format was a Net Best Ball total score over the 5 rounds. We will continue to run this league as the people who played in it last year really enjoyed it. Also last year we started running indoor tournaments. There was one tournament every month of the winter starting in November and going until March. The formats would change every month from 1-player events to 4-player events. We ran each tournament for two weeks, so people had more flexibility to play in them when they had time. After the two weeks were up, we would send out results and information to register for the next tournament.

On Monday July 12th, Stafford Country Club hosted 45 PGA Professionals and 23 amateurs in the first of five Major Championships presented by Michelob Ultra. Jake Eckley, Assistant Professional at Tri-County Country Club, won the overall WNYPGA Open at Stafford Country Club with a 4 under par with a 68 after a playoff win against amateur Kyle Downey of Locust Hill CC. This is Eckley's first Major Championship win in his WNYPGA playing career.

Michael O'Connor, Owner Professional at The Ridge Golf Club, won the Low Senior Professional division with a 69 after a Playoff round against Kirk Stauffer of Chautauqua GC. Kyle Downey, amateur from Locust Hill Country Club, won the Low Amateur Division with a 68.
